An old prison, which is worth a visit if you are already on the south-side of the island. My partner and I paid a lot of money in a taxi to visit here and it was a little disappointing having seen the war-era prison in Hanoi.

There are lots of plastic statues of guards and prisoners depicting the brutal nature in which the prisoners where treated. The figures are in disrepair, many of which missing limbs or held together with plastic.

Interesting but saddening to learn of the barbaric treatment that was used , worth seeing though. Very hot conditions so go prepared as you are in tin sheds most of the time.

As depressing as Phu Quoc prison is, it's a part of history and worth the visit to see just how harsh the conditions were and treatment of prisoners was.

Just do some research about this place before you go. It was not run by Americans, but by the "American puppet-government", i.e., the South Vietnamese...
All the signs can lead you to believe this was an American prison camp, which it wasn't.
It's not far from Sao Beach, so you could include it in your itinerary.

We travelled south to the prison with little idea as to whether this would be a worthwhile trip or not but as there are limited sights on Phu Quoc Island we thought why not. And to my surprise I thought this place was excellent and informative. They have recreated a part of the larger prison camp and re-built it to it's former condition using models of soldiers and prisoners to depict many scenes throughout the quite large layout. It is free to enter and we just followed the layout in a sort of system popping into each of the barrack buildings and reading the various signs which were very informative, if seemingly a little one sided. There's even a section where you go through a tunnel which shows how some of the prisoners managed to dig there way out. Don't miss this section. Many of the models are shown being tortured in a variety of ways but the most gruesome has to be the barbwire tiger cages. Small two feet high cages only large enough to fit a person in set outside in the heat of day and cold of night where the information advises on little food and water and fires being set next to them to further burn the prisoners until their skin just came away. Must have been a terrible ordeal. Mind you most of the torture was pretty horrific and the models on display enabled you to get a good impression on how things must have been, even if again it seemed a little one sided. We spent about an hour and a half here and there were very few other visitors. Well worth the trip and I would say a must visit when on the island.
