It is a sad reminder that there was this horrible war and how prisoners were treated. Opposite there are stalls selling fantastic Phu Quoc pepper - fresh and tasty. I always buy it there.

This "attraction" is still being developed. When we went, it was free to enter. It is quite political with references to the American puppet government throughout the museum section. There is a large outdoor area where they are recreating some of the more gruesome atrocities such as tiger cages and being buried alive. Overall, the prison gives an interesting insight into Vietnam's recent past and the island in another incarnation. Not for the squeamish. Can easily be combined with a trip to Sao Beach.

This place gives you a good idea of the prisoners conditions (really awful). The real life dummies are impressive, and new ones are being built....

They are rebuilding the prison as a good outdoor museum. Already you can get a good impression of how it must have been during the war against the U.S.
They also have the signs in english

I am under no illusion about the US and French involvement in Vietnam and as in every war there were atrocities committed. I am also a seasoned travellers to Auscwitz and other atrocity sites. Those museums were sensitively presented and were of course quite shocking showing what man can do to man. However this was a crude portrayal of torture techniques with interpretive boards that were beyond belief. As we went round they were preparing yet more fibre glass models of prisoners with iron rods being driven through their thighs or teeth being pulled out or boiling water being poured over them. It is free, it is a reminder that Vietnam has had a grim past and as it develops they do need to remember what has been done to their people. This is a missed opportunity to talk about the war without resorting to sensationalism. I agree it is definitely not for young children but make up your own mind about your own visit.
