Mai Spa & Resort

I,m glad I didn't take too much notice of some of the reviews of Mai spa as now having spent 9 nights there we were more than happy. Every member of staff was very helpful and are all trying hard to speak English. The Spa itself is very good especaily the manicure service.
We had a beach view room which was just as we had imagined, basic but everything we needed. If people complain that the room they get on check in isn't what they expected then they haven't done their homework! I noticed one reviewer said th breakfast was substandard. Well we definiatly thought it was the best we had in Vietnam. Not a sign of that horrible Phu! just fresh eggs and Bacon cooked just for you.Warm baguettes to dip in the golden yolks, Freshly squeezed fruit juice of your choice, the best cooked pancakes cooked to order, and as much fresh fruit as you want...substandard? The food all day was also very good. I don't think so! The only blot on the landscape was on our last day a group of Russians arrived to ruin the peace, and as none of them spoke English there was nothing the managemant could do!

Room Tip: Sea view rooms my be a bit expensive but well worth it. A visit or two to the night market in town i...

“Something I will ALWAYS do again”

This winter in Hanoi has not been very friendly or accommodating, over the Christmas or New Year festive period?

During the Winter of 2009, we went to Phu Quoc Island and stayed at the Mai Spa Resort. So we thought that we could just do it again……..
We then made airline bookings (which were very difficult) and called my friend who is running Mai Spa Resort. Off we went………..and booked 2bungalow rooms (by the main wing) and 1 seafront room (there were 6 of us)

As I used to work at Phu Quoc Island, touring the island was something just about normal but this time, it “makes the difference”?

Day 2 We made arrangements to have a BBQ by the beach front over Christmas Eve and to add to the exciting seafood and meat items, the Manager (Ms. Oanh) introduced fresh King-size Prawns (from her kitchen) and what an extraordinary impact it made to this BBQ party as after a hefty dinner, we were just sipping wine - laying on the beach till the wee hours of the morning (it was a great difference from Hanoi's cold, cloudy and damp weather). Was it the King Prawns that simply made the difference………..and an unforgettable night ever to remember.

Day 3 And talking about touring (on Christmas Day), we took a car to the northern side of the island, stocked up with BBQ food items, took a speed boat to a remote island and with stacks of beers, we were just again forgetting what it was like having winter in Hanoi ?? An event well worth to consider as I would very well recommend Mai Spa Resort for the most friendly, homely and relaxing resort, I have ever landed on.

It’s all with personalized services, even manicure and pedicure, Not forgetting……………their unforgettable spa services (by the gardens) which is a true hideaway from the bustling cities of Hanoi and Saigon.

Room Tip: Ask the Manager (Ms. Oanh) She has every recommendation that any guest would like to have?

its just located at the centre of the duong dong area. you can easily get to most popular bars, resturants, shops. the hotel got its own bbq everynight and it is very good though. the room just provide the basic eqiupments like bed and table. no tv but is ok since the beach view is outstanding probably one of the best beach view along the long beach. we also had the spa here and the service is amazing. overall, a good choice to stay cosz.

The Mai Spa Resort is directly located at the beach with a great view from the seafront bungalows. The room was simply but tastefully furnished and very clean. Staff was friendly and the massages offered really a pleasure. Especially great was the fresh Seafood BBQ the hotel owned restaurant was preparing every night. Overall a very good experience!

We are a couple from Australia in our late 20's. Usually travel backpacker style and by no means fussy! Well travelled.

We stayed in a beachfront bungalow for half our stay and a full seaview room for the other half. The full seaview room far outweighed the bungalow.

Pros:
- Very Good Location: On a nice, quiet stretch of the beach. 5 minute walk to majority of restaurants/cafes. 15 min walk to town.
- Cleanliness: Very clean. Housekeeping cleans rooms every day.
- Rooms: Spacious rooms with air con.
- Organised motorbikes for us conveniently.

Cons:
- Value for money: Far too expensive for the quality of resort.
- Service: While no one was rude, we did not feel welcome in our 7 day stay. The atmosphere is lacking.
- Showers are only hot at night.
- Grounds are shabby.
- Breakfast substandard.
- Spa is double the price of other spas. Try Aroma Spa towards the south end of Long Beach.
- Restaurant: Twice the price of other seafood bbqs.

Our stay was not bad, but it was nothing to write home about. Unfortunately, everything else was booked. Try to book earlier if possible.

There's not much to do on Phu Quoc than to sit on the beach and drink beer or cocktails, and this place is perfect for it. We had the garden view app, which are very basic and quite noisy, you'll know when your neighbours are back... But that is just a small issue, just find yourself a beach chair, order a drink or join the very good seafood bbq, and you don't want to go back home!

To start off, accommodation overall on Phu Quoc Island is overpriced for what you receive, and this place is no different. Not saying that this is a bad place, but if you've enjoyed the value elsewhere in Vietnam, then you're in for a bit of a shock here. Every place seems to charge more than what they're worth, and although the island is nice, it's no tropical paradise (by far), though it does have the genuine Vietnam feel about it.

It costs about $5usd for a taxi from the airport, but ensure you advise the driver of the correct name, as further up the road is another Mai Resort. I learnt the hard way, as my driver dropped off at the incorrect location. Luckily, another taxi came with guests shortly after and I managed to get to the correct spot with only a little delay.

The resort is located down a small road (which also leads to another resort), and thereby ensuring a quieter and less disturbed stay, as it's more private and secluded. The reception area is a short walk from the entrance gate through a pleasant garden (nothing spectacular) and has many sitting areas, and the staff are helpful and efficient. I was welcomed with a complimentary cold tea and was checked in rather quickly, especially as I arrived before the scheduled 2pm check in time. (NB: If you want to check in early, especially AM time, then you may have to pay an early check in fee.)

I had booked a garden bungalow style room, which are located close to reception and the beach (though no views of the beach, as these are reserved for other grades of rooms.). It had a private verandah with wooden sitting chairs and a garden. Inside is fairly spacious but quite basic in it's features. My room consisted of a rather firm queen bed (with mosquito net), air-conditioner (which has very bright lights emitting from it and can be a little bright at night for sleeping), mini-bar fridge (with only complimentary water) - this was also a bit noisy, a luggage rack, a small table with two chairs, a clothes hanging rack and an ensuite. The room's construction was very plain brick and clay tiles with a window with a garden view and another window which opened onto a rendered wall, and two fluoro lights at each end of the room. The ensuite was of the same construction in a wet-style, open showering concept with a western style toilet and a small sink and vanity mirror. The complimentary toiletries were very basic and the toilet paper rather cheap in quality. The ensuite also had a small window, which didn't lock, and was not very private (though you would have to make an effort to peer in - footnote for the perverts!).

Overall the room was expensive (approx. $65usd per night) for what you receive, even though it's adjacent to a nice beach. On the beach there is a nice restaurant / bar which serves good/tasty food and cold drinks (and cocktails), this is where breakfast is held. The staff are friendly, polite and very attentive. At night they hold a seafood BBQ, with several choices, in addition to the a la carte. The beach is nice and you only get hassled infrequently by locals - usually selling fruit. The prices for the restaurant is better value than the accommodation and comparable to usual Vietnamese prices. I did say the beach was nice, but coming from a West Aussie who is spoilt rotten by good, close beaches, I may be understanding the quality (those from Europe, Russia etc may think they're great???). Sun lounges are available to hotel guests, but are limited - especially the ones in the premium spots. Oh yeah, the sunsets are quite nice...again my West Aussie lifestyle may have under estimated this experience for others.

They have a spa and massage facility within the grounds, but I didn't utilise these services. However, I did hire a motorbike for a couple of days which was great value. (Approx. $5usd per day - cheaper the longer you hire.) The island is relatively easy to explore by yourself, and the hotel will provide a complimentary tourist map. (NB: If you do get lost don't take any directions or advice from the local kids as they don't care where they take you, they're only in it for the ca$h, and you'll probably end up more lost than before. Pay a taxi driver to get you where you need to be.)

As I have seen all there is on the island, I doubt I will ever return, but for those heading to Phu Quoc this is a relatively nice place to stay. If I could turn back the clock I would've forked out the many extra dollars required to stay at a 5 star resort rather than this place, yet it was still nice and I don't regret it. (Just the value for money is not like on the mainland.)

Room Tip: Booking well in advance gives you a discount, but it's still expensive in comparison to mainland...
