We did not stay at the hotel but I could only recommend the excellent restaurant on the beach.
They have a very large choice of seafood, delicious food and a very good price/quality ratio.
This is a superb stop when visiting the beautiful uncrowded beaches of the North of the Island.

We booked a stay here as the last phase of a honeymoon in Vietnam. It was supposed to be a relaxing beach vacation after a month of travel. We were really looking forward to unwinding. However, we were really disappointed with this place. It was impossible to unwind and relax when the room was unclean, the grounds were run down, there were poor, sad mangy dogs all over that it made us feel gross to pet (their skin, sadly, was just covered with sores of some kind), we had to go hunt down someone any time we wanted a beer, we learned where the napkins were in the restaurant because we always had to go get them ourselves, and the food was overall very average. Every morning the staff would rake up the tree leaves that had fallen, but they didn't pick up the garbage that had blown around during the night. There were two beer bottles on the ground that stayed put the whole time we were there. There were two really nice staff members that worked there, but overall it was a weird atmosphere and not good customer service. We saw a guest come in and try to give back a kayak paddle one day- he stood there for several minutes. There were about 6 staff members all standing around talking, and one even walked right past him for something- eventually the guest put the paddle down right in the middle of the restaurant because nobody would pay attention to him.

Back to the room- it was dark in there, because it was crowded in with other "bungalows" and trees. So every afternoon when they turned the generator off, it was pretty dark in the room- and that's usually when we came back from wherever we had been and wanted to take a shower. Of course, no hot water, any time. There were cockroaches in the room, the mosquito net had large red stains on it (?) and the top was covered with dead bugs. It was so un-inviting!!!

We actually looked at a room at the hotel right down the road and considered moving- we definitely would have if we were going to stay longer. Mai Phuong is just not worth the money- it would have been way better for us to pay a little more and stay in a place where we could really relax and enjoy ourselves without feeling creeped out.

The last thing is that because this place was so far from town, it was difficult to "escape" and go try other restaurants, etc. It took about an hour (at our pace on a motorbike) to get to town.

Overall, I definitely do not recommend this place.

Wow. We had such an amazing time here! This was the perfect holiday location for us. It is located a long distance away from the main town, too far to catch a taxi there regularly (too expensive). However, this is exactly what we wanted and needed. We were away from the hustle and bustle, forcing us to truly unwind and enjoy what is the best beach we have ever been to. We had a range of activities at our reach - walking along the magnificent beach, sun-baking, swimming, kayaking, snorkelling or booking one of the many tours. One huge highlight is the restaurant - we ate so much! Wow, the seafood was amazing - especially the tuna and the battered prawns! The accommodation itself is fine, the bungalows are so cute! They are basic and could potentially be updated a bit...but we LOVED them! Thank you so much to all of the staff at Mai Phuong!

Room Tip: There are total beach front bungalows . . you literally open your door and you are on the beach! We were behind these a bit, it was still lovely!

Beware - this place makes out it is a 'resort' when in reality it is no more than a collection of dirty basic rooms alongside a badly run restaurant.

We booked through agoda.com as the site advertised the 'beach front suite' on special offer down from $198 to $84 per night. On arrival we found our beach front suite to be no where near the beach & the view of the beach was blocked by an eating area. The toilets were smelly & dirty and the electrics faulty.

We tried the restaurant just once after being brought a watery fish in foil (supposedly a whole bbq fish).

Our stay lasted just one night - Although we had booked for three we just couldn't bare to stay for more than one so sought other accomodation.

Room Tip: Don't stay here!

I was a little apprehensive staying here after reading the mixed reviews on tripadvisor but my worries were gone on arrival. We were picked up on arrival at the airport and the journey to the resort was about 35 minutes. We stayed in a garden view bungalow and it was clean and comfortable with mosquito nets provided (which is a must at this time of year). There was hot running water throughout the day. There were issues with the power but if there was a power cut, a generator came on within seconds. The restaurant was nice. We stuck to the normal enough beef/chicken/pork dishes but there was an extensive sea food menu if you're that way inclined. There was motor bike rental for $10 a day if you want to head into Duong Dong. Staff were friendly and helpful and even gave us a free t shirt on check out. While the resort is quite remote, the only difference between it and a resort in town is in town you have a choice of restaurants and bigger beaches. The beach at the resort isn't very big but it's nice and wasn't too crowded when we were there. This resort is a good stay for Phu Quoc.
