We spent a week in a MAGICAL spot on Phu Quoc Island. It wasn't the beachfront location that made it magical as we had to walk 15 minutes down a quiet dirt road past pepper plantations and cashew trees to reach the beach. It wasn't the secluded privacy or luxury furnishing as our simple and beautiful bamboo bungalow didn't provide any sound proofing or fancy furniture. It wasn't the guided tours or workshops as our home stay didn't offer those. Nevertheless it was one of the highlights of our trip to Vietnam. Full of warm memories and people to remember.

The MAGIC lay in Peter, his friendly staff, the incredible banquets we were served every night around a table filled with light, laughter, music and guests that reflected back Peters warmth, sincerity, and love for what he dreamed and built from those dreams.

Days spent reading, eating, sipping freshly squeezed fruit juices, exploring the island on motorbike, snorkeling, swimming on a stretch of almost deserted Ong Lang Beach in bathtub warm tropical seas that shimmered with phosphorescent plankton at night. Like to cook? Peter and the staff welcomed me to join them, teaching the simple and more complex dishes offered. All the food is exquisitely fresh and healthy... Therein lies the magic.

Freedomland is a slice of paradise. The bungalows are big and comfy, the staff is wonderful, and the grounds are peaceful and gorgeous -- hammocks for everybody! The best part was the communal all-you-can-eat dinners every night for only 100,000 dong, which were some of the best meals we've had in Vietnam -- and so much better (and less expensive) than the few nearby places to eat. The 80,000 dong all-you-can-eat breakfasts were also spectacular (pancakes, eggs, fruit, coffee, fruit shakes...). The beach is about a 10 minute walk away, and is practically empty and very clean. Much better than the rest of the island! Make sure to book ahead at Freedomland, though, because once this place gets into the guidebooks, everyone's going to want to stay here.

Oh Freedomland... a place which you will surely never forget!
It's quite unlike anything else here on Phu Quoc, offering travelers who are looking for a communal atmosphere and alternative lifestyle a real little paradise away from the rows of bungalows on Long Beach. Located off the beaten path in a jungle-like area near Ong Lang, it still only a 10 minute stroll to the beautiful and empty sand beach, unspoilt by mass tourism, and a 15 minute moto ride into town (Duong Dong).
The owners Peter (Vietnam) & Rita (Portugal) are real gems, clearly putting their heart into this place: 7 bungalows (some with private bathrooms) set among lush bamboo and palm trees, with one large communal house in the centre where everyone shares grand dinner feasts together in the evenings. There is a strong emphasis on cultural and personal exchange, so it's not a place for people who want to sit alone and quietly over their dinner! There's also a fireplace in the centre and the occasional bonfire BBQ at the beach.
The rooms are all unique and built quite stylishly with natural materials, even the common bathrooms are made with beautiful rock walls. Everything is very clean & tidy and all staff super-friendly, food is fantastic (with vegos catered for). There isn't really anything to complain about with this place, and we stayed here 2 weeks. It helps if you have a motorbike if you want to explore the island, but you can rent one through Freedomland, too. If you come via taxi, tell the driver to take you to Tang Loi Resort, and on the way you'll see orange signs pointing to Freedomland (it's new and drivers don't know it yet!). Rooms range from 10-30USD and food is inexpensive.
Lastly, they donate 10% of all income to their charity "Bamboo Mind Foundation", which offers English tuition and school scholarschips to talented children of poor families in the region.
