Spent an amazing four nights in this jungle paradise and wish it would have been more! We had high expectations that were quickly surpassed by the charming bungalows, deserted beach, and incredible dinners. I would say if you are anywhere in Vietnam, no, anywhere in ASIA, make a point of visiting. Thanks to Peter, Rita and all of the friendly staff for a perfect time in Phu Quoc.

It's hard to imagine that a place could live up to the reviews we read about Freedomland; but it can and it does, and more. We stayed at Freedomland for three nights and left wishing that we could stay forever. Our bungalow was a work of art, the dinners were extraordinary, the atmosphere relaxed and friendly, the beach (a charming 10-minute walk away through the Phu Quoc countryside) was absolutely gorgeous and practically deserted...I can't think of a thing I'd change about the place. The only note of caution I would give is that Phu Quoc is an island on the edge of Viet Nam, power fluctuates, and so following basic food safety rules, especially for breakfast and lunch, is probably a good idea.

There isn't really much else to say about Freedomland beyond the glowing reviews that are below. My fiancé and I just spent two nights there and could've easily spent more. I dare say we will return again in the future, for longer and even with friends or family.

With the positivity on here, our expectations were high, but somehow exceeded. Particularly so in regards to comfort levels - this really is far more stylish than the hippy-commune/jungle hostel that Lonely Planet's describes. It's a boutique hotel with a touch of wild and without the often unnecessary frills.

We would recommend Freedomland to anyone who enjoys a great balance of comfort, service, privacy, socialising & a slight edge of adventure.

Yes, the rooms lack air conditioning & hot water, but it really didn't bother us. If you are super urbanite that is really scared of the wild it might, but I doubt it.

The beach, while a ten minute walk, is fantastic. The service with sun chairs and umbrellas for guests plus the chance to order food is a huge plus.

Finally, the food was exquisite, possibly the best we had in Vietnam (which is saying something as we've loved it almost everywhere) with a huge well priced dinner each night consumed together with other guests.

As you can very easily choose between being social and privacy, it's a great place for couples in particular, but also single travellers and young families.

We'll be back, thanks guys!

Freedomland is a place where you feel at home, the bungalows are simple and beautiful and the food truly extraordinary. Peter is a magician in the kitchen and sitting for 2-3 hours each night at one long table, under the stars, creates a lovely opportunity to share food and stories with other travelers. Freedomland oozes warmth and hospitality, we particularly loved the walk to the beach, the set up that was simple yet tasteful, we found it to be one of the best beaches on the island. We stayed for 8 nights in bungalow number 1, which had an adjoining room for our kids and was close by to the communal area so we could put them to bed and have dinner with them very close by. Peter was always happy to cater to our needs as a family, he regularly checked in with us to see if we needed anything, the kids were fed earlier for eg. Freedomland was definately the highlight of our VN trip. Our kids are already talking about returning next year. Thank you Peter and Rita for such a memorable and wonderful stay, we will definitely return. Justin

My partner and I travelled to Vietnam February 2011 for three weeks. We flew to Phu Quoc for a couple of days and ended up staying a lot longer because of this place. What really makes the experience so fantastic is the owner Patrick - he's an exceptional host who has created a most wonderful resort. The resort looks beautiful, is superbly managed and maintained with love. The evenings are delightful, sharing the evening meal, which any world class restaurant would be proud to serve, with fellow guests. Cocktails’ are freshly made and delicious. Breakfast was superb too, selecting from fresh fruit and pancakes...in fact the whole experience was superb! Having extended our stay a few days...one night Patrick accommodated us even tho he was full, setting up a bed under stars (and a mossy net). He really couldn't have been more helpful. Valentine’s Day was a highlight in a week packed full of them, Patrick arranged a boat trip from a local fishing village to a deserted beach where we ate fresh seafood. The type of experience that as a westerner it would have been near on impossible to do in that part of the world...unless you spoke Vietnamese and new the village existed (it was remote)!
Neddless to say, we both had an amazing time and often think of our time as Freedomlanders!

Room Tip: We stayed in a different Hut each night - they're all uniquely delightful!

I am always cautious when reading too positive reviews. But this place, if you have the attitude of accepting the lack of hot showers, is very good in spite of it's lack of resort facilities like pool, etc.
The main ingredient of success is the owner couple's dedication to their guests: we only reserved 3 nights because we wanted to try something finer (more luxurious) for our last night. We realized after a day that we wanted to extend our stay, but unfortunately they were out of vacancies. Peter and Rita, the owners, were both very helpful in helping us to place us at their competitors hotels, even though this was quite a task in the busy season. This on top of all other help we received.
Restaurant is top notch - indeed

A fantastic base on a largely untouched Island bringing together great food, a back to basics existence and the opportunity to make some new friends.

We chose to stay at Freedomland for six nights as our relaxing reward at the end of two weeks travelling from Hanoi to the Mekong Delta and loved every minute of it.

Lonely Planet does the place a massive disservice by referring to it as a 'hippie commune', which only served to confirm our growing suspicions over the years that it shouldn't be relied on as an accurate guide to accommodation.

Everyone else there was just like us; families, couples or small groups looking for a more cost effective alternative to the expensive and over populated resorts set along the main strip on Long Beach.

While we had a great time and have no complaints about the facilities, some of the compromises you make by choosing to stay here rather than somewhere more expensive, make it hard to give it the full five stars. The complex is a hot 20 minute walk to the beach while the bungalows themselves are completely open to any wildlife that wants to come or go. Everything electric is subject to the fluctuating power grid on the island, partially supported by the local back-up generator, which means that power can ebb and flow at some unusual times, sometimes leaving you with barely functioning fans and fading lighting.

None of that was a big problem for us or any of the other guests we spoke to though and was more than made up for by the fantastic food and great company.

Having rented motorbikes one day to explore the island (which can easily be done from right outside the entrance for $10 a day) we were able to find that our beach is one of the best on the island. Add to that great massages offered on site, if you're looking for a quiet retreat to unwind at a great price, then you'll find it difficult to locate anywhere better.
