Talkoo Beach Resort, Khanom
Ranked #15 of 23 Khanom B&B and Inns
Reviewed October 23, 2013

We are into the second week of our two week stay and we just love the place! First we had a bungalow across the 'highway', which is in fact just a quiet two way road and had a two/three minute walk to the beach, but as we decided to stay longer we asked for a room closer to beach - its exactly the same, size wise but now we only have to walk less than a minute to the beach!
The little bungalows are fantastic value for money, with all mod cons, superbly clean and very comfortable.
The hotel management and staff are excellent, they simply can't do enough for you and if there is anything you want / need, they are happy to oblige (we asked for chairs on our balcony instead of the sun lounger and this was happily dealt with).
The buffet breakfast has been great - I'm a vegetarian and there has always been something there for me, whether it be western or Thai food and if eggs etc... have run out when we get there then we have always been asked if we would like more cooked.
Evening meals are superb - admittedly a little more expensive than you can get elsewhere, however 150bhat for a delicious green curry is still excellent value for money.
The beach is just wonderful and exactly how we like it - nice and quiet and virtually untouched by the tourist masses! This little province in Thailand remains true to itself and we hope it stays that way for many more years to come!!
Oh and as for the hotels 'karaoke nights' we've been here 10 days and tonight is the second one, it's not karaoke, it's organised entertainment for a function (who can blame any hotel for trying to turn a profit, in lean times - in fact, good on them, if this helps them maintain the high level of standard that we've enjoyed). Our tip would be to request a room slightly back from the beach to ensure you're not disturbed - either way we really didn't find it a big deal and are happy for the locals to come here and let their hair down!
Khanom is rather spread out so transport is essential, but bike hire is cheap and roads are quiet so safe to drive around.
This is the hotel we would chose if we stayed in Khanom again.

Room Tip: Rooms around reception offer great access to all amenities.

Took a room across the the road at 900 baht inc. breakfast. Turned up and looked nice and indeed the room was nice, the beach is lovely and the surroundings looked great. So why not and let's stay there (That was 4PM).
Come 6.15, leave the room and where we were going to eat at their restaurant on the beachfront, 2 megga speakers set up and karaoke by one tour group of about 40 people ensued along with their buffet inclusive meal. Hardly any room left to sit (not that you would want to as it was super cranked up loud) so off we went in the car (lucky for us we have a car) to another restaurant at half the price up on the next small bay. Come back and yes wailing karaoke until 11PM.
In the morning turned up for the buffet breakfast. The wife has rice soup in the mornings and yes you guessed it, by 8AM no more (as the tour group had had it all) and no they wouldn't make more of this so cheap and simple dish to knock up in under 5 mins. I ended up having horrible dishwater coffee, ham, no eggs as they were gone too, and lousy bread.
However, the staff at reception were a nice bunch of people but not at the restaurant in the evening or at breakfast.
Apparantly these tour group Karaoke type things happen once to three times a week according to a nearby neighbour, so it's pot luck if you get a nice stay or a lousy stay in my opinion ... I was the unlucky one.
Love the beach there and wil go back again but not to this resort for sure as all they seem to care about is their tour group and couldn't care less about the others staying there IMO.

We spent two nights here in August 2013 on route to the islands.

Location
Khanom is beautiful, the beach that Talkoo is on is unspolit, there are resorts along the coast though they are not obvious. There is a store where you can buy supples that is in walking distance though that is about all, without transport you will not be able to go far (maybe not a bad thing). You can walk to some other hotels along the beach to eat. We only tried CC's based on reviews, we were greeted by CC and he was lovely and very helpful. We had very reasonably priced beers and food on the beach in a lovely laid back environment.
Kahnom and surounding areas are local, not overly touristy, don't expect lots of shoping or 5 star resorts. You will need to use some creative communication with the locals, which I recomend, it is lovely.
We did not see the pink dolphins though it was suggested that you take a boat ride to do so.

Car Hire
We hired a car from Avis from Suret Thani airport and dropped it off at Donsak Pier, we had to pay a little to do this (reasonable) and were not sure how it would all pan out though 3 Avis boys in their red jackets were there to meet us at the pier and the transition was easy. I would definately recomend a car in this area, we went to beautiful deserted beaches and fishing villages. It was easy to drive around and find our way, you can get a nav man for 100 baht/day. The car itself was fine though don't expect Australian Avis standards.

Hotel
The hotel is split over 2 sides of the road, one beach side where the pool and restaurant also are. I believe it's cheaper away from the beach though would recomend staying by the beach. We were in a room right by the restaurant where we could see the beach. We were happy with this as the resort and restaurent were not busy. However both nights (one night in our resort and one next door) there was karaoke and it was REALLY LOUD and really bad, going to about 1am. It caused for a bad sleep and whilst I don't want to spoil people's fun it was totally out of character for the beautiful quiet area, did I mention how loud it was?!
Service at the hotel was fine and they were very helpful in calling the car hire people for us. Based on reviews we didn't use the restaurant other than breakfast and one lazy lunch. The breakfast buffet was not real good though the next day we were served from the menu which was great. I did have the hotest seafood salad that I have ever had here one day.
The pool was empty when we were there, no notice or apology.

Room
The room provided everything we needed and was really quant. Bed was large though hard which is standard in Thailand. Room was clean and sorted daily and the air con was great. We enjoyed sitting on the balcony in the afternoon, there is a bench seat to sit on though only one chair, 2 would have been perfect.

Room Tip: There are some cabins on the beach side that are toward the road that were set in a lovely enviromen...

Basically this is a nice hotel. We can walk to the beach easily. Room is small and comfortable. Design is unique. However, food service is not that satisfactory as we have 60 pax and there is only a small barbecue pit to serve us.

We stayed at this resort for two nights. The cabins were very cute, kind of whimsical, but small. Great for a single or a couple, but no more than that. The bathroom was cute, with a western toilet and a very unique wooden sink. Towels and toiletries were provided. The air conditioning worked well, and there was a mini bar, which was nice, as there are not really any stores nearby to get snacks - you have to drive into town.

We stayed on the beach side - the cabins are not waterfront, but they are very close to the beach. The beach is beautiful, and very long, you can walk for miles! It was almost deserted most fo the time too, great if you want some peace and quiet. The beach was pretty clean, and the sand is fine and nice to walk on.

The restaurant seemed pretty good, the staff were very nice. It was not very vegan or vegetarian friendly though, almost every dish is made with some kind of seafood or meat. The staff did try to accomodate vegan requests, but I was mostly limited to pad see ew or fried rice for each meal, and there were no veggie breakfast dishes available. They were happy to allow me to bring my own food to eat though, and would provide me with hot water for noodles, or things like that.

The pool was clean and cute, and we actually used it a lot more than we thought we would - there was some sort of weird jellyfish convention in the ocean while we were there, so we mostly avoided going in.

The walkways around the cabins were in rather bad repair - bricks were missing in a lot of places, leaving holes. This made it rather treacherous to walk around at night, and I wouldn't advise it if you were drinking! There were also a lot of red ant colonies, so you'll want to wear shoes when you are walking around, they really hurt when they bite!

All in all, we liked this resort. It is not touristy at all - you won't find people on the beach selling things, or offering massages, or anything like that. There is a bar next to the resort, but it was not noisy, and when we stopped in for a drink there were only about 4 people there, and I think at least one was staff.

Room Tip: The ocean side rooms are close to the water - the other ones are across the highway.

I was there last week of April 2013 with family. We were 9 adults with 3 children. The main purpose was for pink dolphins and visiting the famous monk image on Nui Island. Unfortunately, it was strong wind on the day, so there was no sight of pink dolphins!
We stayed in 4 rooms which are newly build, across the road from the main hotel. The rooms were nice, spacious for all of us. However, the some pillow cases were a bit worn off and dirty with black spots. The big surprise was huge cockroach in my room. My wife is cockroach phobia so it was a bit story for her! But for me, no problem. I may be a bit picky because I'm a hotel employee but with the price that they offered was not bad and we spent only 1 night there.
However, the pool and restaurant need to be improved. The food was a bit expensive therefore, not so many customer there. I might stay there again if I go back.

Room Tip: Choose the room across the road if you don't mind no sea view. Rooms are newer and spacious.

We did not stay in this hotel. All our scores refer strictly to the restaurant.
Perfect location, on the beach, full sea view.
No wine at all.
Lots of items on the menu unavailable, including spring rolls and som tam.
Wrong food for 2 of us, rice arriving just before we left. Everything already cold.
Significantly expensive, a fish dish 450 bahts.
Very slow service, waitresses needing constant reminding.
We will not eat here again. This is a place to invite your girlfriend for a beer, not wine, let alone food.
