“... And.... Relax...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 12, 2014

My husband and I visited Khanom in November and spent 10 days in Aava before moving on to Bangkok. We stayed in a pool villa, one at the top of the pool (furthest from the beach) and I would definitely recommend one. I'm not sure I'd want to stay in a room that wasn't around the pool to be honest. Great to be able to roll out of bed and into the pool. Also the pool villas at the back are less overlooked by people sunbathing at the end of the pool and people on the beach (imho). Also in this villa I think you get enough sun to sunbath on your own deck though not all day but that's fine when it's baking hot.
Bed in room too hard for me but you can ask for a mattress topper. Staff attentive, helfpful and very friendly, including the manageress.
Restaurant really overpriced we thought which was a shame as it meant that it was mostly empty. Practically everyone went to CC's down the beach or to one of the other hotels (and free transport to and from) e.g Khanom Hill (which we really enjoyed... it wasn't busy but food was great and very well priced). Also there's a seafood restaurant overlooking the sea just up the hill (again they come and pick you up).
We were lucky to have good weather for about 8 days but rained on last 2. Not much to do when it rains, though we were happy to read our books. On the whole it's mostly the type of holiday/place where you get up early and go to bed early. Heaven for us.
Beach is lovely and sea good to swim in... fair bit of litter on the beach though which was a real shame and I wish the hotels along the beach would take the responsibility to clear it up, wouldn't take long.
On the whole would recommend Aava for a lovely, relaxing break away from it all. If you want a bit more life you can always take a day trip over to Samui (for the crowds).

Room Tip: Go for a pool villa for sure

Dear Ems001,

thank you so much for your nice review about Aava Resort & Spa. Especially we are delighted for your comments about our staff. It is our pleasure to serve best and with friendly and smiling manners.

Of course we are sad to hear that in your opinion Aalto restaurant was overpriced. We already lowered our prices for season 2013/14 and prices are now on a level from where we cannot go down anymore unless lowering quality of products and service.
All quality wines and quality ingredients are imported and highly taxed in Thailand and we have made decision to offer interesting, unique and quality menu for our guests. There are loads of options for cheap and standard quality food outside the resort but Aalto remains as only five star international/fusion cuisine restaurant in Khanom.
Prices of our main portions are still reasonable, main portions starts from 3,5 EUR.

We hope to see you again at Aava!

Aava resort offers perfect harmony. Chic design, nothing too much and nothing to be missed. Very comfortable room. We stayed 3 nights on deluxe villa. We were very satisfied with the value for the money. Breakfast was unbelievable - it was just perfect. You can choose from the menu what you want to enjoy. I had greek yoghurt with honey and some jam - I didn´t know yoghurt can be so delicious. Then two perfectly fried eggs sunny side up and fresh fruits. And of course freshly pressed juice. Just perfect way to start your morning. And it´s good that the breakfast is until 10.30 a.m. On all the other hotels we stayed the breakfast was only until 10 a.m. I think it´s too early on a holiday to have the breakfast before 10.
We had two dinners and one lunch on the hotels restaurant. Food was just perfect - so delicious. The prices could be a bit lower. I would guess people would eat and drink more on the hotel restaurant if the prices would be cheaper. If you need to pay 300 baht for a glass of house wine - it´s too much in Thailand. It was good wine, but still. And the drinks were also close to 300 baht/drink. I didn´t see so many people having drinks outside the happy hour.
We hired the scooters for couple of days. They were very good scooters, had big motors (max speed 90km/hour) and were quite new and very good condition.

Dear Jelbrew,

Thank you for your time and effort to write these kind words about Aava Resort & Spa.

In Aava we believe that breakfast is most important meal of the day and our breakfast has truly gained fantastic, deserved, reputation!

Wine like all other quality (imported) products are difficult topic in Thailand, because of taxation those luxurious products and prices comparable high. We want to keep our Aalto restaurant standard high. It is possible to eat cheap and standard quality food outside resort, but Aalto is only five star quality restaurant in the area. To keep this level, we only use quality products and sell only quality wines.
Prices on our menu are still very reasonable, portion prices starting from 3,5 EUR.

Me and my team we wish to see you again at Aava!

Our first rural trips in Thailand started here - coming with night train, to Surat Thani..after a first stop in the capital of two days and nights. The night train was a nice and cheap way to travel.
From Surat Thani we had to rent a taxi to take us out to the place, but also the hotel have this service to the same price, about.

The Resort is like to come into an "Alvar Aalto" environment (the famous architect from Finland).. Everything is designed into a clean pure design - very Finnish so to say. We liked it.
The owner itself is a young Finnish man, very polite and nice.. Together with his wife he have builded this site. We used the service of the restaurant, beach and hotel.. Also we rented our motorbike from the hotel.

If you book, book via booking sites, because it give you a better price than to book online directly.
We found the Resort very nice, clean, polite staff, very good breakfast, a good place to start from. It is calm and give a peaceful impression. There is also a spa-massage, a library, a pizzeria etc. The rooms was nice, the beach was private for the hotel guests, and the options for to make own tours or tours arranged via the hotel is possible. The rooms is in small cabins with security box, minibar, shower and a veranda.. Some of the room have direct contact with the pool. I guess that are the nicest place to have.. We had ours somewhere in the middle.
- We preferred to rent a motorbike and did many tours ourself and that is the cheapest way to see caves, waterfalls, eat local seafood (recommending seafood restaurants south of the hotel, as an alternative!), see the rubber tree farms etc.
The rural landscape this region, is still not so crowded with cars that it is, in many other places in
Thailand. The area is easy to visit with a little motorbike.
(You need - if you come from the northern countries or have an O-blood.. repellant oil against mosquitos - "DEET, or citronella oil AND also some medicine to take after to have a problem with sandflies or mosquitos.. BECAUSE the bites get often infected..and that rule is all over all Thailand.. A lot of sweet water exist around all hotels - This Resort is not protected from that little animals).

We can recommend this place! It was a nice experience. We think that if you need during your travel a peaceful place without the crowded town, villages around Thailand.. this is also a good alternative to stay in - for a time.. to clear the mind from the cultural chocks.. and to rest - near the seaside, the sound from the waves etc. Here is peaceful!
The breakfasts are very special, the hotel got a nice tourist nomination-price for them some years ago.
The main chef was from Austria, and we believe it has something to do with the title of to be one of the best hotels with special breakfast in the whole Thailand.

Room Tip: The pool rooms have direct view over the seaside as well they are really at the front of the pool. N...

Dear ghwoman50,

Thank you for your time and effort to review Aava Resort & Spa and also give more insight information about our beautiful, natural surroundings here in Khanom!

Just to make one correction, our guest chef for this high season was actually from Finland.
Aava's famous breakfast is originally created by Aalto's first guest chef, famous celebrity Thai chef, Chef Nokveedz. Over a time breakfast menu has been little bit modified, but it is still very much as original as Nokveedz it created.

In Aava we believe that breakast is most important meal of the day, and that can definitely be seen and tasted.

We hope to see you again at Aava!

I have just stayed for 1 night at pool villa and honestly I think that 10,500 bath per night is extremely overpriced. I understand the peak season but this is just too much. Add also that we had no towels in room and internet in room did not work. For Thai accommodation standards I think on a peak season such room shouldn't be higher than 4-5,000 bath. Front desk staff slow and not so friendly. Lobby should be cleaner. Called front desk 3 times around 6pm and no one answered.

Dear Luca P,

thank you for your time to review Aava Resort & Spa.
Sorry to hear that you weren't satisfied to the room price.

Christmas and New Year are most request holiday period for us like to any other hotel in Thailand and sadly we sell "fully booked" already months in advance for that time.
All hotels around he globe has similar pricing policies.

Aava Resort & Spa has got really good feedback for example from travel agencies about it's pricing. But of course we do understand that just staying for one night during peak season, prices might be difficult to adjust.

With Kind Regards,

My wife and I have just returned from a 10 day stay at the Aava resort. This is a special place and a wonderful place to visit for a quiet and peaceful vacation. We stayed in 1 of the 6 pool side villas and even though we never used the pool, due to bad weather, the views are awesome.
We researched the holiday re weather but like other people we made the mistake of researching Thailand, not southern Thailand. In the South the monsoon period stars in NOVEMBER and so we had torrential rain for 4 days of the 10 we stayed and only 1 full day with no rain whatsoever.

If we had not been in such a superb hotel the weather would have ruined this holiday. The staff are truly great, always with a smile for you and the food is nothing less than 1st rate. Favourite meal has to be the breakfast, fresh fruit, breads and preserve and a choice of some 20 or so mains. In our 10 day stay I had 10 different mains and enjoyed each one.

The resort consists of about 28 rooms. There is a reception. a spa centre, a restaurant and the rooms all set in a lovely setting. it is short of a bar, or bar area where after eating you can go and chill and meet up with friends over a nightcap. At the moment the only area to sit and chat is the restaurant, and outside of the restaurant but if the weather is bad there is nowhere else to go.
If the weather is perfect outside the restaurant is fine but in poor weather a small inside area would greatly benefit this hotel. Another slight niggle was the poor internet Wi-Fi connection which meant we had to sit in reception to obtain a signal which was not very convenient.

Saying that I would go back to the Aava for another holiday tomorrow, ( no in 3 months when the monsoon period finishes.)

Room Tip: Pool villas 1 and 6 are next to the beach. In November no.1 had the sun for much longer than 6. if t...

My wife and I have just spent 10 days at the Aava Resort and what a pleasure it has been. Everything from the amazing location, great food, friendly staff, superb spa. The breakfast menu was excellent allowing you to move between French style breakfast to Scandinavian and the fantastic Thai breakfast. We also went on some trips in the local area, which were outstanding including a trip arranged by Toon at the local bar CCs which was also a great find.

Room Tip: We stayed in a pool side villa which I think is the best place to stay in the hotel

Last week stayed here with my husband, son and his girlfriend. What a gorgeous resort right on the most beautiful beach. Picturesque, serenely quiet just what we wanted. Compared with all the restaurants around, who all came to pick us up, the restaurant in the resort was pricey. The standard was excellent though. The tours we went on were most enjoyable - one to Koh Samui and one to see the pink dolphins. We were very fortunate to see 1. Made the trip worthwhile.Thailand is certainly a beautiful country.

Room Tip: The rooms which back onto the pool are sought after but I am not sure I would have wanted one of tho...
