“Was not impressed...”
Reviewed September 20, 2012

Sorry to say but this "resort", as it's officlal name calls it, is anything but that. It's 22 standard hotel rooms on an unimpressive poorly landscaped and designed piece of property that only happens to be lucky that it's beachfront.

As others say, do not be fooled by the pictures. It's an older looking hotel and in need of an upgrade all over. The employees are nice but it does not make up for the lack of amenities that you would expect at a place that calls itself a resort. The restaurant is only so so. The menu did not offer anything too appetizing other than standard fare food.

I won't speak any more harshly about it other than to say just know that what you see is not exactly what you get or expect.

My girlfriend and I decided to depart earlier than planned because it just was not what we expected, regardless of the price.

I would probably give this hotel a 2.5 star but would give the staff a 5+ star. The hotel is alot older than what the pictures on the web actually look shows. It their defense we also visited during rainy season which probably made it look more run down. Our hotel room smelled of mold and our mini bar had a leak and we woke up one night with ants crawling all over us. The staff however was extremely great and helped clean up the situation even though it was 2am. The free breakfast only had two options and was okay. The pool was decent, but the beach was extremely dirty due to the storm. The staff and their hospitality and kindness definitely made our stay wonderful, but the quality of their room was definitely not worth the $56 per night we paid. Probably will not return :(

Wasn't the best weather when we got to Subic Grand Seas. The area was in the middle of monsoon season with rains just starting to pour in. At first impression, the hotel entrance, lobby and our hotel room looks almost impressive considering the $47/night we paid for it and also comparing it to the other available hotel options we can book over expedia within our budget. However, don't be deceived by the nice pictures shown over their website. This hotel is sitting right next to the beach but the beach really isn't much. Its dirty, unkept and you'll probably smell some tinge of petrol lingering in the waters as many container ship surround its beach horizons owing to the busy port and shipyard industries flourishing around this area. But that's just based on a previous unrelated experience with this type of surroundings not this actual setting. We didn't even dare swim on the beach as my mom said there was a dead cat floating near shore. The hotel outdoors area isn't well-kept too. The landscaping needs updating and since its rainy season, the parking area becomes wet and muddy which is not good at all considering the parking area is right at your front door hotel room. Our room was as expected and maybe more considering the price we paid. Service was one very good thing about this hotel. Food is expensive. Hotel staff were very accommodating and courteous. Other than this, not much to rave about. However, I can still say this one looks the best around the area if you really have to stay in the area. Security inside the hotel premises is good. However, if you're the type of person icky about what's outside the actual hotel, you might want to look somewhere else because SGS is also sitting right smack on the side of a busy highway which one might consider a red light district of sorts. You'd also need your own transportation to get around Subic Bay attractions if you stay here because although it is just outside Subic, its about 1-2 miles drive to and from. Overall, great deal if you're on a budget. Look somewhere else if your picky.

Room Tip: Make a special request by emailing their reservations to get a hotel room on the first floor closest...

We just spent two weeks here on a family vacation (07/15/2012 -07/31/2012). The hotel is clean and secure. The staff is A+ and will bend over backwards to make sure you have a good time. The food in the restaurant is excellent. We loved it!!! We will most definitely return...I highly recommend this facility...John Merola and family.

Room Tip: Only 22 rooms here which adds to the intimacy of your trip. I prefer upstairs so when you walk out i...

We had a very comfortable stay in Subic Grand seas. The rooms were large, so was the bed (very soft), lighting in the room was good, a free breakfast was thrown in and the bath was nice - hot shower had good pressure and it was clean.

The only flip sides were - service in the restaurant was poor (though the front desk was courteous). and the rooms all open directly out (especially on the 2nd floor where you can never keep your window open / as everyone passing by can see your bed!)

Usually the crowd here is the more upmarket Manila crowd, which is good (as compared to rest of Baretto, the number of foreigners here was lesser than Filipinos)

The resort -
Has one row of large well furnished rooms on teh first floor (ground floor in UK), and one single row of rooms on the second floor. Each room has free wifi (excellent signal), large flat screen TV, cable (lots of channels - including nat geo, bbc, cnn, gma, etc.), refrigerator, tea-coffee and kettle. We picked up our snacks and noodles fro the biz mart opposite.

It has a swimming pool, which is FILLED with people on weekends.

Food -
There is a restaurant by the sea shore. There is also direct access to the sea / beach from the resort. Most of the rooms have some type of view from the window - of water, that is. Unfortunately there is limited privacy so you cannot really keep your curtains up - you HAVE to keep them drawn all the time.

How to reach here -

From Manila, take a Victory liner bus to Olongapo - there is one every about 20 minutes from Cubao. Pasay has fewer buses. Alternately, you can get a bus to Olongapo from Dau (Angeles) every 20 minutes.

From Olongapo, take a blue jeepney going to Subic - stop at the church, the resort is opposite to it - but you can see the big billboard of Subic grand seas on the left side quiet clearly. Costs 12 pesos.

Else you can take a taxi from Olongapo - costs 250 pesos.

Final opinion -
This is one of the better resorts in Baretto, and definitely a nicer place for families and couples to stay.

Room Tip: Rooms on the 2nd floor have better privacy and are quieter

There are many positives to this hotel - nice rooms, very good TVs and channel selection, nice pool and dining area, good views.

However, there are problems that management could easily fix. When we ordered the free breakfast, it came in 5 minutes, but was totally cold. This tells me everything was pre-cooked and just sitting around. The next morning when I ordered I asked if it would be hot, and they said of course. Again, it came in 5 minutes, and was cold. I got the impression that since it is free we should not complain. However, this is an issue with service as well as health and should be fixed!

We went to Subic Grand Seas resort end of January 2012 to unwind. We chose Subic because we wanted to go to a resort just few hours away from Manila. we initially wanted to book at Subic Park because oft he good reviews but I was glad we tried Subic Grand Seas.

The resort is very accessible, the entrance is right off the main highway of Olongapo. The duty free area and the zip line were 10-15 minutes away. I was a bit apprehensive when i saw the entrance along the road since from my experience resorts located along the highway are quite far from the beach.

But I was pleasantly surprised to see that the beach itself in right in front of the resort! The resort is small but very cozy. They only have few rooms but they easily accommodated my request for a 2nd floor room giving us a nice view of the ocean. The staff are very accommodating and helpful. The rooms are big, with complete amenities, more than worth the price we were charged for the room. The wifi though they have to improve. We paid for it and were disappointed that it did not work inside the rooms. We had to go down to the restaurant in order for it to work.

The swimming pool is also very nice, with a nice view of the beach and well lit even at night. It is also very conveniently located near the rooms. I love the benches around the pool, it was so nice to lie on it at night and just stare at the moon and stars.

The beach is ok, nice to take pictures with or walk around but we did not dare swim because the water looked a bit dirty during the time we were there. The swimming pool though and the view of the ocean more than compensated for the beach.

The resort had a small restaurant for meals. Breakfast was included in the rate though we were given limited choices. We can only choose from what the chef had cooked for that day, which is often limited to only 2 choices. At night they had a singer entertain the guests though there were only a few of us. It was nice sitting at a table overlooking the ocean, drinking beer and listening to a good singer. The beer and food were nicely priced even though entertainment was provided.

Overall I loved the resort and will definitely go back there again.

Room Tip: Choose the 2F room with a nice view of the beach
