“Had a nice stay here”
Reviewed May 20, 2014 via mobile

Travel time from manila to Johan's beach resort is about 2 1/2 to 3 hours via sctex. We stayed at a room worth P1000 at the back of the dive shop which was a good value for our money since the room is cold with aircon as well as electric fan in it, 32 inches flat screen LG cable tv, cabinet with a safe, a lampshade, a table, and 3 chairs. We can easily move around the room though the bathroom was quite small with a very small bath tub also.

The staffs were nice to us all the time, there is a billiard table, 4 computer units with internet near the entrance, we had wifi in all parts of the resort, they offer jetski rentals, diving, banana boating etc, they have a lot of food choices to offer in their restaurant that is open 24 hours ranging on an average of P200-300, and finally, the view and ambience of the place was really awesome!

On the other hand, we cannot bring in food bought outside but there are foodhouses nearby so we ate breakfast outside so we can cut down on our expenses.

Overall, we had a good stay at Johan's and we will come back again here.

Stayed for 3 nights during the Holy weekend. If you don't have a high expectations, you will have a good and comfortable time here. My room is inside the dive shop right on the beach so I have security outside my room 24 hours a day. The management will not clean your room or change bedsheets/towels daily unless you ask them. It only has 3 spaces for parking but there are ample places to park along the road. The road by the way is not improved so it is rough for your car as well as dusts. The restaurant serve good food and affordable local beers. Overall, this hotel is good for someone who is just looking for a decent place to stay near the beach.

Room Tip: Internet connection next door is a lot faster than this hotel and bring a laptop with movies to watc...

Ate here twice, once breakfast and once dinner. Breakfast was ok, but I got the sloppiest tuna
salad sandwich I've ever had in the Philippines. Way too much dressing and not enough lettuce,
onion (and no tomato). Wife had breakfast "croissant" which was actually not a regular croissant but some kind of local bread in the shape of a croissant. Coffee was actually quite good, food was disappointing (tuna was large size, I got greedy, 200 pisos for about a 6" sub size with soft
French bread.)
Next day we had dinner. Wife had fish and chips which was a good-sized serving and nicely done. I had chicken curry with pan-fried potatoes which was also a good-sized serving and both dinners were quite good. Maybe a different person cooking from the morning. Reasonable prices for both and a good value for the money. Coffee again was good. Wife had a margarita and I had Kahlua with ice.
Hers was more a "snow-cone" because not enough liquor and of course small size (about 100
pisos). Mine was decent for the money and liquor was noticeable. So we recommend trying
the food at night and experiment with the drinks. Restaurant/bar looks right at the ocean and you
can sit outside right on the sand.
Johan himself was there and a friendly guy.

I prefer not reviewing places that don't meet my requirements but this place is not good place.

First off the place is due for renovation, it's very low standard and the pictures are like 5 years old. Imagine the picture after it's been used for 5 years.

The restaurant does NOT allow outside food. Even if you offer money so you can eat snacks on the beach on one of their tables, it's ABSOLUTELY not allowed. So if you bring your own snacks you have to eat them in you dingy room. Not outside next to the ocean.

There is this page in the menu about specific requirement for fries to be a BELGIUM fry and asking you not to call fries Belgium if they don't requirement. Even the French don't care what you call your fries!
This is pretty much the attitude from the owner.

Wifi did not work for my laptop and other guests had problems also.
Employees point out that you can use the computer provided at the bar but who know what kind of virus, trojans and key loggers are on public computers.
I do not recommend visiting ANY website that requires password on these public computers.

Do not bring any expensive SCUBA equipment here.
It's gets rolled around on the bottom of the dive boat where people sometimes inadvertently steps on it because of the rocking boat.

I lost a dive bag at this resort and I tried to contact them to see if they could offer any help. Perhaps somebody found and turned it into the lost and found?
Absolutely no response from them. No help at all.
I suspect that the dive bag was stolen at this dive shop because there was a PADI card in it.
For all I know the shop liked the tools in the bag and decided to keep it for themselves.

Absolutely no response nor help regarding the lost/stolen dive equipment.

Room Tip: Treasure Island right next door. Or Arizona which also has a dive shop.

We went there with family a total 9 persons.
The rooms are low standard and the whole resort show time of age, buy again it have some kind of personality to it that is appealing. But in genneral for a family weekend its not the right place due to the low standard of rooms.
Resturant is ok. We did not eat there so much.
The staff is very frindly and the dive senter is very good.
Dive staff is some of the nicest persons. Dive sight is the best fir wreck dive.
Dive equipment well maintained and nice boat for the dives.
We will Deffently go there again for diving, but properly stay on a diffrent place.

We do renovate all the rooms every 5 years, this new renovation on the 10th year anniversary of the resort is on going right now and the rooms are for 80% finish, we will finish completely by February of this year. We got all kinds of rooms with different prices starting at P700 up to P2500, we know there is a whole lot of difference in price, size, location and beach view between these rooms.
I do not know any western restaurant where you can bring your own food or drinks, we have the largest choice of foods and drinks to enjoy your stay with us and use our beach and restaurant area. Belgium fries are different than Mac Donald fries, that is why we put this page in our menu book to explain the difference in shape and how to cook them, you have to understand that we got our customers from all over the world to eat here.
If the free WIFI is low speed than is this the problem from the provider, we placed 8 routers in our resort to give you a good reception. In this area of the Philippines we give you the best speed we can get, some days are great other days are slow even for us.
We have beautiful weather for the last 5 weeks, no rolling or rocking of our dive boats, perfect conditions for diving.
We did not in any way get your information on a lost dive bag, how can you carry your diving equipment out of our resort to see later that your missing your dive bag? Nobody here steal dive bags because there is a PADI card in it, nor do we steal tools. All our dive staff are working with us for many years and lost or forgotten equipment are placed on the side to return to the owner.
Best regards,
Johan

The rooms are dingy and shabby, so don't stay here unless you're a SCUBA diver.. But the restaurant is fantastic, and open 24/7. They have some 15 or 20 Belgian beers, if you can believe that. And everything I ate was delicious, well-prepared and presented. Large portions made it even better. And the prices were very reasonable, compared to Manila.

Room Tip: I'm not sure there are any good rooms. The only ones I saw ran off of a wet, dimly-lit corridor...

Thanks for the compliments of our restaurant and bar.
We have all kinds of rooms with prices from P700 to P2500 but none has a wet dimly corridor. We had bright lights in the passage ways but than guests where complaining about the light when they want to sleep, so we changed them to warm white. Next time you can ask to see all the different kinds of rooms, just ask the reception.

Best regards

The resort is showing it's age due for renovation.
Not sure how anybody can rate this place high at it's current condition.
The rooms are in poor condition and all the charm of the small beach front resorts are gone.
Ants and other bug problems due to cooking in the room.

Dive shop was small, chaotic with stuff hanging and spewed everywhere.
You constantly bump elbows with other divers in the dive shop as well as on the boat.
Divers were loosing stuff or getting it stolen by other divers.

In the morning you can watch all the Filipino bar girls doing the walk of shame out of guest rooms.

The worst part of it was the owners take it or leave it attitude.
It really didn't seem to matter if small things could be changed for guests.
It was not appreciated if you spoke up.
They get plenty of guests from over seas who come here to SCUBA dive, sleep with bar girls and pass out drunk in the filthy rooms.

There are plenty of better resorts and similar price in this area with better attitude and appreciate you being their guest. Even if you're coming here to dive a bit, sleep with bar girls and pass out drunk, other resorts are nicer with owners with better attitude.

Room Tip: Stay next door at treasure island or any of the other resorts!

We got all kinds of rooms with different prices starting at P700 up to P2500, we know there is a whole lot of difference in price, size, location and beach view between these rooms. Ants and bugs do visit us as they do in every resort and home, if they show up they are taking care of.
Our dive shop platform is huge 10 meters by 4,5 meters, there must be a lot of divers there to go elbow to elbow. The dive equipment do hang around to dry and there might be 20 to 30 equipment per day depending on how many dives we make. Our 4 dive boats are 7 meters up to 11 meters long and divers are placed next to each other, we might have full boats. We have no record of divers stealing from other divers but divers do loose small equipment under water and is sometimes found and returned.
Most of the guests in our family resort we know personally, newcomers might be with there wives, family, children, girlfriend or new girlfriend, this is a matter of personal opinion and is left to the guest.
If you have personal small things you want to change we can help you but if you want to change things against our rules and regulations we can't help you, these are implemented over the years to help and protect our guests, not to harm you.
People come to our resort to have fun and relax after there hard work from anywhere in the world and we should be open to everybody's way to do this, against our principals or not, we live in a free world and we want to keep it like that. As long as people behave we will allow them to join our hospitality.
One of your recommended resorts has a floating bar in front of the resort and have 6 bars in town, you better check this out before you recommends a sin free resort.

Best regards,

Johan
