On our arrival at Red Tulip, we were a little underwhelmed by it's appearance and location. It was situated down a potholed sidestreet, about a 5-10 minute walk from Fields Avenue. As it turned out, that is a blessing in disguise for travellers who haven't come to the Philippines to drool over the local women.
Once inside the locked front door, we were greeted warmly by the reception staff who quickly checked us in and showed us to our room. We were staying in the unrenovated part of the hotel so the room was quite bare but it had everything we needed: comfy beds, 2 powerful and moveable fans and a nice, warm shower.
The hotel also had a bar with a decent menu (we didn't eat there but the food looked/smelled tasty enough), friendly staff and a pool table. If we knew what to expect down Fields Avenue, we may well have spent all day there.
After a day of walking around in abject horror at the sight of geriatrics walking around with women young enough to be their great-grandaughters and hawkers offering to sell us stunguns, we headed back to the safety of the hotel. We had planned to play a few games of pool and then go to bed. Enter the hotel's owner.
He asked us if we'd like to see the good side of Angeles and, despite our reluctance, offered to take us to a few music bars. 'Mister Rob' as he is known by most of the band's, took us to 4 bars, each with their own brilliant house band. Some of the singers were phenomenal. Rob had completely revived our faith in the Philippines and made our stay in Angeles worthwhile.
The following day, we arranged a taxi to the airport through the hotel and were delighted to discover Rob would be taking us. He took us via his nearby factory, which he gave us a quick tour of, and found a trolley for us to cart our heavy bags around in.
Overall, without this hotel and Rob's generosity, our stay in Angeles would have been 2 days of hell. If you do have to stay in Angeles, then I would 100% recommend you stay at Red Tulip.
