Reading the other reviews on Tradvisor it seems that people are confusing Danau Toba International Cottage Berastagi with a resort of a similar name in Parapat on Lake Toba. The Brastagi resort is nowhere near the lake.

We stayed here for a few nights recently during our travels around Northern Sumatra. We were brought here by our guide, and our initial reaction was that it had some good things going for it. Our room was spacious and clean, with hot water in the bathroom which made a nice change, though the bedroom had seen better days (we were Informed that they were refurbishing but we did not see much evidence of this). The selling point was the wonderful view of the two volcanoes (Sibayak and Sinabung) from our window and patio. The was a swimming pool but we did not use it.

It was about 10 or 15 minutes walk down into the town (there is a short cut). If you want fresh towels, bins emptied, or the room cleaned you have to let them know at reception as it does not happen automatically. There was free Wi Fi in the main lobby/ reception area but not in the rooms.

Unfortunately, breakfast (included in the price) was dreadful. We were given a choice of greasy fried rice, greasy fried noodles, or toast, all served with a greasy fried egg. The orange 'juice' was a cordial, not fresh. No fruit, which seemed pretty poor considering the amount of fresh produce that is grown in the area. The coffee was very weak but the tea was okay. It was a bit of a joke really.

There is a mosque just a little way down the road so expect to have your sleep disturbed at around 4:30am. It was noisy, though more tuneful than some! I do not know if it is every morning, but definitely on Friday and Saturday. A good nights sleep is very important to us so this was an annoyance.

It was an okay place but be wary of hotels selected by a guide as they may not have your best interests at heart (more often their own!), as we had already experienced via different guide in Bukit Lawang. We paid 300,000 (about 30 USD) a night which was more than we had originally intended on spending on accomodation here but, after nearly 5 hours in a minibus, we were feeling jaded and wanted to relax.

If we returned we would try a different hotel as I think you can find better value for money elsewhere. The selling point of this resort was the view, the rest is debatable.

Room Tip: Go for one of the cottages with a view of the volcanoes.

Stayed on 3rd April with spouse for a night. Our room is facing Lake Toba. What a magnificent view. No bad smells as mentioned in other review.

Good Points:
1) The hotel is strategic which is near to the jetty to Samosir Island, just walk a few steps and you will reach the jetty.
2) Near to the Halal Restaurant which brought buy our travel agent
3) Nice room, comfortable mattress.
4) Nice view from our room & balcony
5) Good room service

Not so good points:
1) Limited hot water, only applicable from 6 am to 8 am & 6 pm to 8 pm
2) A few mosquitoes in room & a lot of mosquitoes at lobby at night. (Make sure you bring your lotion which can get from Pharmacy to avoid insects while you sleep)
3) Toilet is just so-so.

Kindly bring extension cord & sweater coz is kind of cold especially at night.

Room Tip: Bring anti mosquito lotion, and extension cord.

we just stayed in danau toba hotel. we were booked here through a tour agent. the rooms were old and had a stench around them. we were staying closest to the lake and the rooms were certainly run down and it sort of lacked security as the bathroom windows were broken and poorly maintained. the worst part as the stench from the bathroom. i had though only my room had the problem but turned out my friend's room also had the problem.

the rooms were situated far away from the restaurant and you literally have to climb so many stairs to just reach the restaurant. (its like hiking in the resort ). the restaurant food was good as we had set dinner and snacks there. however the buffet breakfast was a different story. they serve you only indonesian buffet however, western set breakfast of 2 toast, fried egg with butter and jam is only served if you request for it.

the pool has the most magnificeint view ever. the whole resort has a romantic feel to it in terms of the surrounding mountains and the weather. however the quality of the hotel itself is poor.
as we had booked through the tour i am not aware if the other rooms were better. nevertheless i think its quite ridiculous to have to walk so far to get to the restaurant, what if you have old people or sick/handicapped people? how will they move around?that was the question we asked ourselves.

in summary, a poor hotel with the most breathtaking views i have ever seen. perhaps i will return to lake toba, but not to this hotel

We travelled in the low season midweek so the hotel was very quiet.

We were allocated a spacious en suite room with a magnificent view over the valley and to the two active volcanoes. The standard of the room was acceptable for this part of the world and the staff friendly. The temperatures locally fall dramatically at night so warm clothing is required. In our view the swimming pool could only be used by those who are hardy. An reasonable continental breakfast was offered which came with a fried egg and fruit.

First time stayed here for a night with my family with 3kids - 9 yo, 4 yo & infant. Got the room (not that small) just beside the lake and the scenery alone from the room is worth the money. Bed was comfy, room no aircond so have to allow fresh air in by opening the window - there's no netting. As a result we need us to burn few mosquito coils which we bought from nearest sundry shop. We slept soundly. In the morning, really magnificent lake scenery and surprise by hotel's beautiful architecture. Breakfast is good only serving local dishes. Kids enjoyed the swimming pool with also toba as the backdrop in your face. I wish i had spent longer time here.

Stay here during my visit to Toba Lake.

This is quite large cottage complex. The location is premium near the Toba Lake. My cottage room actually face directly to Toba Lake, which provide me with splendid scenery. The room has balcony with a view directly to the Lake.

The interior in my room is seem quite bit old. The wood big bed. The classic style power outlet. The big butt TV. There is no remote for this TV. First time I even wonder whether it is still alive or not. And since it is a old hotel, the room's door is still using a key!

The inside room-bathroom is look kind of scary. Somehow it look like a butcher workstation in Saw movie. The bathtub, the toilet is look old. The wall is covered by blue colored tile, which is enhance the butcher kitchen style look. The shower provide heated water, but with a scheduled time. If you plan to take a bath at one o'clock in the morning, if you dare, then you must endure bathing in icy cold water. Since the climate at Toba Lake is really cool. That's also why the room does not provide Air conditioner.

Breakfast is nice, served in a really beautiful restaurant. They served fried rice, porridge, fried noodle. Front of the restaurant there is a small swimming pool which face Toba Lake.

Room Tip: choose cottages at the upper hill not at the downhill one. It is more modern
