Grand Mutiara Hotel Berastagi
Ranked #3 of 8 Hotels in Berastagi
Reviewed June 21, 2012

Just spent one night here last month with a group of North American travellers. This was basically a short stop on the way back to Medan from Lake Toba. Picked this place as I was advised that it was the 'best' in Berastagi. No complaints at all.

The hotel is indeed 4 stars, has a HUGE lobby and a large restaurant. Well maintained grounds and a nice looking pool (not time to use it). Great volcano views in the clear morning. The rooms were perfect, but no a/c or heat. As others have commented, this is somewhat strange. Yes, one most likely does not need either most of the time (the altitude keeps it cool). But, for a hotel of this standard and quality, this is a bit of a surprise. To assume that all travellers find the room temperature comfortable is a bit awkward. But, not a big deal for 1 night.

There is a great shop in the lobby with all sorts of snacks and souvenirs (comes in handy!). The dinner service was great... as the restaurant helped to put together a great menu of local cuisine and specialties. We all enjoyed it!

Some group members had a massage 'in-room', and said it was so-so.

No much else to write about this place... no complaints. Nice 4 star place with 3-4 star rooms. Massive bathrooms with lots of hot water!

My friends and I had a super duper one night stay at this hotel as part of our tour in Medan ...

Great place on the hill ... We had Mt Sinabung in tha background while having breakfast at the poolside .. Good choice and great menu ...

Our roon had a beautiful sunrise view with the mountains in the background as well .. Vey nice place ... A heaven for people with a soft spot for photography ...

They even have a karaoke room for those songbirds ...

Enjoy your holiday ...

Room Tip: Ask for rooms with sunrise view .. Great shots .. All rooms are clean, so no worries ...

This is a Chinese owned hotel on a hill top with little around it. The large Chinese restaurant is very good and reasonably priced. Cheaper and far better than some of the backpacker places we had previously been to on the trip. Slightly strange guests while we stayed there with their concealed bottles of booze at the next table and arguments with staff about there being no chips on the menu.

The rooms are large and clean plus have hot water, which might sound strange but on our tour this was the only hotel that did and the water came from above.

Free reliable Wi-Fi in lobby and a good nights sleep watching movies on the bedroom plasma TV.

Good mid trip hotel. A little tired around the edges but perfectly OK.

Have the a la carte breakfast as it's worth the extra.

We would definitely return.

Stayed for one night at this hotel on a family trip to Medan. This hotel was a significant improvement in many respect to the Lake Toba hotel we stayed in before hitting Berestagi. On hindsight, this hotel was the best hotel we had stayed in for the duration of our trip there.

Room and bathroom were larger, cleaner and more comfortable. We were grateful for the quick check in at this hotel after a whole day of travelling. Food at this hotel was mediore but much better than the deep fried food the travel agency arranged for us in Lake Toba and Medan city. More variety at the buffet breakfast table than the other hotels we have stayed in Lake Toba and Medan city.

No air conditioning and heater in the room. Room temperature range from cooling to cold at different times of the night. The hotel, like other hotels in Berestagi and Lake Toba, practiced hot water conservation policy whereby hot water is only available at certain hours in the morning and night. Be sure to check with the hotel reception if this policy is in force and the times it is enforced.

When we arrived at Grand Mutiara, the myriad lights of the hotel gave out an enchanting atmosphere and we were in a happy mood. The room was spacious and from our window, looking at the swimming pool and trees, the sight makes the heart happy.

We went to the Karaoke lounge and there were four of us. We sang to our hearts' content, but the coffee was not served and before the closing time, we were told that the last songs have arrived!

In the middle of the night, the cold air awakened us and we were looking for the aircon controller when we realised that the control is outside the building and there was no need of aircon at all.

Early in the morning, we walked the grounds of the hotel and realised that the hotel may well need renovation. The Grand Mutiara has lost its `M' and the swimming pool looks deserted.
Overall I like this hotel.
