We were first introduced to Villa Markisa through pictures of nudibranchs we had never seen before and were so smitten by the nudi diversity that we decided to make a booking for our year-end vacation. We were not disappointed. The intimate resort, run so well by Christiane, Pedro and their attentive team of service and dive staff, has lush gardens, beautiful rooms and the best muck sites at your doorstep. Christiane herself is a walking marine encyclopedia and we found it easier to ask her to help identify the numerous new species we saw instead of refering to the books in the library. We were very well-taken care of during our stay - we booked a large, comfortable bungalow at the top of the resort grounds with a wonderful view of the sea (do note, though, that the shower and toilet are outdoors). Food was always aplenty and varied. Mealtimes are communal but this was not an issue as the other guests were pleasant (and not intrusive) and we had many stories to share over meals. Diving was spectacular as we could choose to either just dive the house reef or hop on to the boat for a short ride to one of many lovely muck or reef sites around Tulamben. The dive team knows how to organise the dives such that we never bumped into other divers and could explore the quiet seas slowly on our own. Rates are reasonable and each dive (with Nitrox and boat charges included) averages 30 Euros. We have stayed in other resorts at Tulamben before and Villa Markisa is our new favourite. Will definitely be back.

Room Tip: The main house has rooms which are cheaper and look toward the sea and pool - worth exploring.

If you are a diver with the desire for a top quality, service oriented villa- this is your place. Patrons are a fun global mix. The Villa is very well run, caters to guests, and provides everything you need for a fantastic full dive and relax get-away. Every aspect of Villa Mdrkisa Is designed to make live easy and enjoyable for the guests. The food is wonderful. Beer and wine plentiful and of good quality and reasonable cost. The spa is a nice private add to the mix. The dive times: whenever you eat. The diving varies from muck to well developed wreck to reef to wall. Nitrox and excellent rental gear available. Fantastic spot. Christianne and Pedto are the perfect hosts.

Villa Markisa is an exceptional dive resort in Tulamben. In a place where dive resorts shoot up like mushrooms, Christiane and Pedro have created an extraordinary holiday destination. Everything about Villa Markisa is about making guests feel as comfortable and special as possible. We just spent 5 days at Villa Markisa and will definitely come back.
The resort is small but extremely well designed. The bungalows and guest rooms are located in a beautiful garden setting with a central restaurant and swimming pool. Close to the pebble beach where a nice breeze provides a bit of cool air, the sun lounges make for a good resting spot between dives.

Villa Markisa staff picked us up at the airport and the transfer to Tulamben was no problem. We were shown our comfortable and spacious bungalow with beautiful outdoor garden bathroom and air conditioning. Everything was spotless and made from high quality materials. Bins for dive gear were provided and the helpful dive staff moved our gear to the dive centre and set everything up.

Planning diving trips was as simple as putting your name on the board at the dive centre or talking to the ever helpful dive staff. Everything is flexible and trips to the over 20 dive spots along the Tulamben coast can be arranged according to the diver's wishes. The dive guides make suggestions, set up the equipment and move it to one of the two fast dive boats. Nitrox 32% is available and perfect for the diving depths of most sites. When it is time to go, you just grab your personal gear and camera and off you go. The guides are trained to point out interesting sea life, in particular small critters interesting to macro photographers, but generally leave you to conduct your dive as you please. We always felt well looked after. The dive sites are mainly reef and muck diving spots with an abundance of tropical fish and coral. Trips to the USAT Liberty are frequent. Photographers will appreciate the extra wash tub reserved for cameras and the mats for handling sensitive camera equipment available in every room.

Meals are served in a communal dining pavilion with one big table which makes it easy to get to know other guests and your hosts. There are plenty of delicious options to choose from for breakfast and lunch, and dinner is buffet style. The food is very good and includes Indonesian and Western dishes. The wine list is small but well stocked and cocktails and cold beers are available at the beach bar. We greatly enjoyed the food and beverage selection. Since you pay a set fee per person for full board the only thing extra are drinks and coffee after lunch or dinner.

We had a wonderful five days at Villa Markisa and have met some lovely people there. The staff were always friendly and attentive and we simply cannot complain about anything. Christiane and Pedro, the owners, made us feel as if we were staying with friends and not in a hotel and we got an interesting insight into what it meant for them to build Villa Markisa. We were also impressed to hear that the resort provides sustainable employment for 35 staff and that they are environmentally friendly including garbage and grey water recycling. Everything is so well designed, from the generous number of power outlets in the rooms, to the drying rack for wetsuits and boots.

Compared to other resorts in Tulamben, Villa Markisa is relatively expensive, but it is also well worth the money. You are being looked after from the moment you arrive at the airport and provided with exceptional and friendly service and great diving just the way you want it. That is something really special.

We arrived after almost 30 hrs. in transit from Plano, Texas USA. We were beyond tired, but with one night's rest and lots of TLC we were up and on the dive boat the next morning. Our divemaster took us to dive sites that made our trek to Bali worth it.

Christiane's attention to detail, in every aspect, was superb. Even after we had left the Resort, she went above & beyond to make sure my Wife's wetsuit made it safely to the other side of Bali, so we could enjoy the rest of our dive trip! Pedro's ever present humor was much appreciated, as well.

Liberty wreck was just a 5 minute boat ride, but we had plenty of opportunities to dive numerous other sites.

Room Tip: It was handy to have the room next to the dive center. Noise was never a problem except for the roo...

Villa Markisa is a wonderful resort located close to Tulamben, in the north of Bali. Far from the traffic, the noise and the hassles of the Kuta area, it's the perfect place to relax and enjoy the wonderful dives of the area.
Rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable. Staff is kind and attentive, and food is simply amazing. Owners are always around to make sure that everything run perfectly. There is a very nice pool where relax after diving, directly in from of the Ocean.
With maximum 10 minutes by boat you can reach many wonderful different dive sites, including the famous USS Liberty Wreck.

Stayed here for 11 nights in September and all I can say is wow! After reading the previous reviews my husband and I were expecting to have a great time here but the service we experienced exceeded all our expectations.

Where do I start. Well here goes:

Everything here appears effortless. Nothing is too much trouble, everything is perfect. The fact that everything runs so smoothly is down a lot to the management and their attention to detail. It's the amalgamation of a lot of a little things that combine to make a fabulous experience.
We arrived late on in the night (after 11pm) When we arrived we had food prepared and left in our room and were directed straight to our accommodation and left to settle in. Registration was left to the following day to allow us to settle in after our long journey. Very thoughtful.

We had rented a bungalow which was beautiful. I had previously checked on the availability of a hair dryer and was advised this was no issue. When we arrived I found the hair dryer in the bungalow so I did not need to request on arrival. (again very thoughtful)
Each room is provided with beach towels and also the use of sarongs. Good marketing strategy (of course) but also very functional. ( and yes I did buy a sarong on departure as I found them indespensible on my holiday) The rooms are clean and loaded with all the toiletries you would expect from a five star resort. Those that are chargeable are easily marked so as to void any confusion.

The food was very good. I'm not particularly experimental with food and have quite a Conservative palate but the food here was wonderful and cooked to a high standard.

The staff are exceptionally attentive but at the same time are completely unobtrusive which is such a difficult combination to achieve successfully.

The grounds have been laid out with care and even at full occupancy the place never feels overcrowded. It always feels as if you have found your own piece of paradise away from the hussle and bustle. The infinity pool is a quiet haven and many of the loungers have been strategically placed to provide a cooling breeze.

The diving is exceptional. You are charged for what you use which is very efficient. Due to baggage constraints we left most of our diving equipment at home and found the rental equipment to be of a high standard and not too expensive. The dive guides are very friendly and of great help when diving. The resort has also put a lot of time and effort into the creation of a few artificial reefs which you can dive just off the shore from the resort. This is attracting both corals and fish and is a wonderful site to see.

All in I can say that this is the best place that I have ever stayed. Everything is done to make this the most memorable holiday you will ever have. For this to be achieved it boils down to a love of Villa Marksa, and this has to be down to Christiane and Pedro. Two people who have an absolute passion and love for Villa Markisa. They are wonderful people who have the warmth and inspiration to ensure that Villa Markisa remains the gem that it is.

As to the expense. Some say that it is expenive. I say you pay for what you get. And what we paid we got an awful lot.

True to the other reviews I read on TripAdvisor, Villa Markisa is every diver's dream come true. Some key highlights for me include:

1. Diver-Friendly Design
I was pleasantly surprised to find a deep wash tank in my outdoor bath; perfect for rinsing equipment. An anti-slip table mat was also provided in every room for my camera. Very thoughtful.

2. Clockwork dive operations
Everything was reliable and efficiently run. My equipment was well taken care of by the dive crew and they'd rinse down my gear like their own! The dive schedule was always clear and punctual but they accorded flexibility for guests with specific requests. I had an obsession with Spanish dancers and they arranged two night dives especially for me, just so that I got to see what I wanted. Best of all, I had a dive guide all to myself! If the Ritz had a dive operation, they'd do well to take cues from Villa Markisa.

3. Food
Being a foodie and a die-hard fan of Indonesian food, my palate was pampered beyond all comprehension by the resort's chefs. Hearty and honest Indonesian at its best - the sambals were a real hit! Christiane, the proprietor, also infused her European roots in the restaurant's menu with homemade cantucci (oh so perfect with that post dive espresso) and a selection of western desserts. The organic homemade peppermint ice cream was just divine.

4. Hospitality
This is one resort that never runs out of a friendly face or a warm hello. Perfect rejuvenation for those big city types. Be sure to stick around for those warm communal dinner conversations; they're always big on personality and fun. Better yet, join everyone for a drink by the bar while catching the glorious Balinese sunsets.

Overall a great dive experience and a wonderful holiday. I know I'll be back. Big thanks to Christiane and Pedro for a superb job and keep creating the magic.
