Our stay at Umalas retreat was perfect. It was our first time staying at a private villa and now I think I'll get addicted to it. It felt like home with luxury of a five star hotel. Tastefully done villa, with all the necessities one could think of- books to read, games, DVDs, local mobile phone and above all a full time housekeeper/ cook Rusimi who took great care of us. Being a vegetarian travelling in South East Asia can be difficult. But thanks to Rusimi who cooked everything according to our needs. The villa is a bit secluded (am used to staying in hustle bustle) but 24 hours guard outside makes you feel secure. Added bonus was the driver facility so we didn't have to struggle with anything. Would recommend it to all my friends.
Just returned from our second stay at Villa 2 and it did not disappoint! Everything was wonderful, the only problem is we only stayed a week and I still had so much relaxing and exploring to do! Our first trip we didn't leave the villa much and this time we ventured further with our small kids. It was so great to have our meals prepared so after a morning or day out we were coming back to a clean villa and freshly cooked meal. The pool was a massive hit again, as was Rusminis amazing food. Lovely seeing Kay and Anthony pop by and for always having great tips (I'm coming back for my pillow shopping Kay!). Everything is so wonderful, we won't hesitate to book again. It ends up being really cost effective with the villa cook which means more holidays! Fantastic place for a family holiday!
We stayed at Umalas Retreat for 7 days over Christmas. The villa is fantastic, the beautiful furnishings, friendly staff and ambience of this amazing place make it an oasis in paradise. Rusmini (the villa Chef/Housekeeper) is truly a lovely lady inside and out. We had our 6yr old daughter who is on the autism spectrum with us and Rusmini was so kind, always chatting with her and letting her help. We woke everyday to a warm smile and delicious breakfast. Rusmini was happy to help in every aspect of our trip - from cooking delicious meals, keeping our villa beautifully clean, booking taxi's, organising massages, purchasing the little extras we wanted from the grocery store. This is our second stay at Umalas and by no means our last. Kay Shearn (the villa owner) is very quick to respond to emails and no request is too hard. The villa manager and driver Putu will be your greatest friend outside the walls of Umalas, his recommendations and wonderful jovial nature make every exploration fun. The security staff are always welcoming and Happy to help with anything you need. I gad shopping delivered and taxis booked. Our family will be back to Bali many times and Umalas will be our first stop. See you soon Umalas family xx
It was our first time staying in the Umalas and it did not disappoint. From opening the villa doors we immedietly felt at home and were welcomed with smiling faces. The entire villa is decorated PERFECTLY and I promise you will want to take a million photos of the place! We had the kindest house keeper who was always there with a gorgeous platter of fruit and hot coffee waiting for when we woke up. We travelled with our two toddlers (1 and 2.5yrs) and so it was very convenient that we could have any meals cooked for us rather then going out every day. It was very simple, each day we would choose from the in-dining menu what we would like to eat (nasi goreng- amazing!!) and if we would like a cooked breakfast the following day. Then Rusminiis would estimate the cost and we would give her some cash to buy the groceries, then she would come back in the afternoon with the receipt of the goods purchased. She would always stay through til after dinner to clean up and to prepare our bedrooms for night time. Our driver Putu was extremely helpful and took us on a day trip to Uluwatu and his prices were very good! He was also there to take us to the doctors when our son had a fall and we are very grateful to him for that. Around the Umalas area we found some really great furniture stores and it was nice to do some shopping away from the main streets. There was also security outside the villa at all times who were always smiling when we saw them, would call us taxis and would open the door for us. We felt very safe and secure with them there. Although we didn't get a pool fence, the villa was still quite good for the kids (of course you have to keep an eye on them) but the two bedrooms had locking doors and there was a basket with toys and dvds. There were frogs at night that also provided endless hours of entertainment. There is a pepito express grocery store at the end of the driveway which sells fruits and vegetables, breads, drinks and almost everything which is very helpful. Overall we had a wonderful time and we will DEFINITELY be back. Thank you to the wonderful team at the Umalas for our incredible stay! Xx @thesimplefolk_
It was our first family trip to Bali so was quite daunting and we were unsure of which area to stay in and what type of accommodation. Choosing Umalas Retreat was definitely a blessing for our family and friends. Organising with Kay (Owner) our itinerary was promptly confirmed and we were warmly greeted by Putu (Manager) at Denpensar Airport. The Villa was perfect! Wonderful staff! From Rusmini the masterchef with deliciously cooked meals and the security guards Fanton & Maurice who looked over us 24/7! We asked Rusmini if she could cook us a suckling pig during our stay which was traditional and was an experience which we will never forget. The pool was a bonus which was a huge hit with our kids. We will definitely be booking to stay here again as it was perfect for our needs in every way. Thanks again to the team at Umalas Retreat 2. Highly recommend. See you soon :-)
We have just returned home from our first overseas holiday and stayed at the Umulas Retreat 2. We found all the staff very accommodating, the security guards were very friendly and Putu the manager, an excellent driver. Rusmini took such amazing care of us during our stay. She made our family feel very welcome and cared for, and nothing was too much trouble. Her cooking was fantastic and because of this we ate in the villa most nights, this suited us as we were tired after big days touring around so we would return home to a delicious meal and a friendly welcome from Rusmini, and the kids would spend hours swimming in the pool. We felt very spoilt having breakfast cooked for us every morning. The villa offers so many little extras which makes it feel like a home away from home - novels for reading, pool toys, board games, torches, equipped kitchen and many more. The wifi in the villa meant we could stay in touch with family at home and kept the teenagers happy at the end of each day when we returned. Kay was fantastic in helping us prepare for our holiday and throughout the booking process, her customer service was above and beyond. We would have no hesitation in recommending people to stay at one of the Umulas Retreat villas.

If you are planning a trip to Bali and want a safe, quiet, clean, relaxed and friendly Villa then look no further. It was so lovely to have Putu waiting for us at the airport and then on arriving at the Villa, Rusmini had a cold juice waiting for us, along with much appreciated cold towels.
The bedrooms were an excellent size with air-con, plus a fan, plus mozzie nets around the beds. The beds themselves were very comfortable. The living spaces were perfect for all four of us (we travelled with our two very tall teenage boys) and we all found a space to read or just relax and unwind. It was great to have fans in these areas and of course the kitchen was ours to use when our lovely Chef wasn't around (we love our lattes and flat whites, but we really liked the plunger Balinese coffee). Our private pool was fantastic and at the perfect temperature for the hot sticky weather we had. We stayed 10 nights and only ate out on two occasions. Why? We just loved Rusmini's cooking! If we could've snuck her home in our luggage we would have. As someone previously said, every meal was an explosion of flavours. We couldn't get enough of her Pad Thai .. but also loved the chicken peanut sate sticks - my mouth is watering just thinking about them! Rusmini is so lovely. Nothing was ever a problem and she was always happy to help out with anything we asked. We used Putu (our wonderful driver) 3-4 times during our stay to do day trips around Bali. He was always happy to fit in with our requests. When we ventured outside the Villa doors, the Security staff always had a smile for us and were ready to help. Nothing was ever a problem for all Kay's staff. Just a note on the two nights we did eat out (one at a pizza place in Kuta and the other at a beach front Warung) we were so very disappointed with the food after Rusmini's cuisine, however was lovely to sit at the beach in bean bags to watch the sunset.
Kay (Umalas's owner) was fantastic to deal with and made everything so easy. She was in Bali whilst we were there and happened to meet her and could see she is really passionate about ensuring all her guests have a truly memorable stay.
So the million dollar question is: Would we return to any of the Umalas Retreat Villas? The answer: Absolutely! We would aim for Villa 2 every time to ensure we have the services of the lovely Rusmini, but if it wasn't available we feel confident that all Kay's staff would be just as wonderful due to Kay's high standards.
PS: We loved the styling/decor of our Villa, very cool. Watch out Kay we'll be back!
