We stayed for 3 nights at a one bedroom villa to spend our Easter holiday.
Service: The Kunja provides excellent services. We were picked up by our driver at the airport who was very friendly and was happy to introduce difference places in Bali to us (it was our first time to Bali). He drove us directly to our villa (we didn't even have to stop at the reception) to do the check-in and to offer us our welcoming drinks. Every staff was very well-prepared and helpful. The service desk also responded very quickly to every request we made. We had a little problem with our flight arrangements and told the reservations desk (Ms. Dea) that we might have to cancel one night of our booking. Due to the cancellation policy, the hotel was unable to give us a refund but Ms. Dea kindly offered us a complimentary candlelight dinner together with complimentary 2-hour spa for 2 persons. We really appreciate the flexibility The Kunja can offer.
The villa: We love the big pool, the spacious outdoor (but sheltered) living room, the hi-fi set, the outdoor shower facilities and the kitchen. The villa is very quite, very well-maintained and very clean (even though the bathroom and the living area are actually outdoor) and the hotel would arrange around 3 housekeepers to clean your villa every day. The staff came to our kitchen to prepare our breakfast and afternoon tea daily and it made us feel so at home. The TV was placed inside the bedroom so that we could enjoy the air-conditioning when watching TV. It is ideal to do your spa at the living room (you may also do it next to the pool but it may rain..). One downside is that the bathroom isn't enclosed so you may see ants, bees, lizards or other insects in the bathroom (though not very often).
There is a glass chapel within the villas and is a great place for photo-shooting during day time.
Food: The food quality was fair and the portions were big. Would prefer more choices for the afternoon tea (there were only 3 choices: cookies, jaffles and pancakes). The taste and the presentation of the food can be improved. The Kunja provides menus from nearby restaurants (it doesn't have its own kitchen I think) and they would help you do the ordering and serve the food at your villa.
Candlelight Dinner: It's a must-try for couples and honeymooners and is reasonably priced. We ordered a candlelight dinner prior to our arrival and our villa was decorated with a pool heart and surrounded by candlelights. The food was cooked by a chef in our villa and was served by a waiter - we loved it so much and we felt very privileged. The following areas can be improved: (1) The waiter should at least let us know the names of the dishes when serving them to us since we didn't quite know what we were eating. (2) The taste of the food. (3) The hotel gave us a complimentary birthday cake (for my boyfriend's birthday) which was really lovely but it would've been better if it were served as a "surprise" to my boyfriend (FYI, the waiter took out the cake then asked my boyfriend whether we'd ordered a cake...so no surprise at all..). (4) The waiter didn't know that the menu included a bottle of wine (but he promptly arranged for it to be delivered to our villa after we asked for it so the dinner was still fine). Overall, we still had a great dining experience and would highly recommend this option to other guests.
Location: Walking distance to the shops, bars and restaurants in Seminyak. Also close to many of the privately owned villas. If you are at The Kunja, we would recommend Merah Putih, which is one of the best fine dining restaurants in Seminyak and is in walking distance (you can do the reservation online). The Kunja also provides free drop off service within the Seminyak area and Kuta. If you are planning to drop off at other places, e.g. Nusa Dua and Ubud, the hotel will arrange it for you at a price subject to 21% tax and service charge but you may ask the hotel to book an outside driver to avoid the 21% additional charges.
An overall great stay which is worth the price. However, as a privately owned hotel, The Kunja doesn't have its own bars and restaurants, kids club, fitness centre and main pool. If you are going to Bali as a family with young children and would prefer a resort-type hotel, you may wish to consider other on-beach, golf or family resorts.
