Mutiara Bali Boutique Resort & Villas
Ranked #47 of 148 Hotels in Seminyak
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 1, 2010

My wife and I arrived at this hotel having checked out of another in Seminyak which was filthy (Putu Bali). As a result we were keen to find a hotel that was not too expensive (US$80-US$100 per night) and most definitely clean. Mutiara Bali met both these requirements and provided us with a very pleasant stay in a quiet part of Seminyak.

The rooms were spacious and spotlessly clean. The bathroom was a little dated (and in need of some TLC) but very clean and all the facilities worked well.

The service was friendly, polite and prompt at all times and we were made to feel very welcome.

The pool area was particularly lovely (for a inexpensive hotel). We only ate breakfast at the restaurant but this was reasonable and substantial. It was always served promptly.

Whilst the location of the hotel initially seems like a long way from the main road in Seminyak, we quickly discovered that we weren’t that far at all and appreciated the short walk from the hustle and bustle of Jalan Oberoi. The hotel kindly arranged for cheap scooter hire (R 50,000 per day) for us which made life very easy.

Overall this was a pleasant stay in a hotel that was not too expensive. It was well located, clean and rescued us from an otherwise pretty appalling stay in Seminyak.

We stayed in the family room. The bed was very comfortable to sleep in... however, I woke up with a line of insect bites. Was told they were most likely bed bugs.... NICE. Also had mosquito bites while sleeping (which I guess inevitable). Slept with insect repellent every night there after. The walls and curtains were stained, evidently from insects being squatted to death. The place could have done with a new coat of paint.

The food (breakfast) could be better. I thought to order one of the local dishes (they're usually better)....nasi goreng... but it was the most plain and tasteless nasi goreng I had ever had. Had a full western breakfast the next day and was again disappointed.

The pool was a tad murky so not very welcoming.

We rented a scooter so we found the location quite convenient.

Service was good except one of the staff laughed at us when we told them that our helmets got stolen/ taken one morning. We were very annoyed... especially after apparently one of the security guards witnessed or allowed some other guests to take our helmets... then they tried to blame us for not locking the helmets to the bikes. No one does this!!

There is definitely better accomodation out there and it's worth paying that little bit extra.

Very rare to give a poor review in Bali but when you book the 4 bedroom villa you expect something for your money.

Food was bad, the villa condition below average - no in bedroom wardrobe or mirror. Plus a conversation pit - youn eed to see it to believe, a novelty for some but conventional lounges woudl have been nice.

The pool was going green and they couldnt fox it because the staff were away? The in house BBQ feast was exepnsive and absolute crap.

On the brighter side the balance of my golf group had a 3 bedder which had been renovated and was far superior to the 4 bedroom.

I still see much better value elsehwere but well lcoated mere minutes from Grocer and Grind and other Western places of good food and drink.

Yes, this place is within walking distance of Bali's best restaurant street. But you have to walk down a long walled alley that leaves just enough room for a car... you can't believe you're anywhere near a beach, let alone a rice paddy. Just 6 years ago, this area still had pastures and paddies. Now it's a concrete jungle.

It took me 12 minutes to drive the narrow alleyways to get out to Petitengit Beach. Ridiculous! No way is this a beach resort, as it is crammed into a neighborhood of those ridiculously overpriced "villas" (think Beach Haven, New Jersey, shore houses... I am not kidding).

Now I grant that this place is a very adequate oasis, but you may not be tempted to get back outside again to brave the concrete.

Pluses: the pool is large, and there are garden plants to soften the small space of that area.
There is a bank vault style safe deposit box system at the front desk (only your key and the hotel key will open your drawer)
The breakfast was nice and large and the waitress was smart and friendly
The room was clean, nicely appointed, had new firm mattress and good tv. Felt spacious, loved my little deck. Lots of desk space and storage space.
Business people on buying trips in Denpasar or Seminyak will find this a fairly convenient location.
There's a nice little gym.
It's new and pretty

Minuses (yes there's more):
When I arrived at 9:30 pm, no one was awake or even at the front desk. Bell boy and front desk clerk were discovered sleeping on the couches in the lobby!!!
It was lightly raining and the bellboy had no umbrella to offer me, and the walkway was not covered, so as we wheeled my bag to my room, we all got wet.
As with many small Balinese hotels, you're out of luck breakfastwise if you have an early morning flight. 7 am was the opening of the restaurant, no exceptions.
Parking very limited, and as I said before, ridiculously far from beach.
I recall pool seating for about ten people. The hotel has room for five times that number!

This was our third and final hotel on this trip with my three pre teen girls. We loved it. The rooms on the bottom floor looking onto the pool are gorgeous, the hotel has done an excellent job in decorating and maintaining them. We enjoyed being in the rooms so much and the outside bathrooms are outstanding and huge! Flat screen tvs.
The pool is lovely and a lot of time was spent in there. The grounds are lovely and clean and the general overall look of this hotel is really well done. One of the nicer three star hotels I have stayed at for sure. The restaurant was fine, we had dinner there, breakfast nothing special. The food, room service and mini bar are overpriced, only real downside to this place, so make sure you take your own supplies and be sure to eat out.
Whilst the reception speak fluent english, the service and ground staff don't. Struggled to get bottle opener which neither room had (we had two rooms), room service dishes were never picked up for 24 hours at times and only then because i had to request them to be removed from balcony tables.
But putting all this into perspective, this was our favourite place out of the three hotels we stayed at. Value for money for accommodation and five minutes walk from UItimo Restaurant.
Congratulations to Mutiara Boutique Villas for a great stay (just work on the service aspect of your staff a little bit more).
I will stay here again in November when i go back for sure!

The Mutiara Bali Boutique Resort & Villa is an excellent place to stay. We stayed in a 2-room Villa with private pool. The place is quiet and relaxing. Breakfast is prepared and served at the Villa (always on time). The staff were courteous and helpful. The rooms are comfortable and well furnished. It's quite near the city and getting about is easy. Good place for family but if you have small children, watch out for the pool as its deep end is really deep.
