What a lovely, charming and elegant place is Bambu. From the moment you walk in you can't help but smile. The design, the background music, the lovely staff, the professional management, the water surrounding you, all add to make it a wonderful experience being there. They have really put a lot of thought into all aspects of your dining experience, and they have got it right.
Looking at the menu, and having a 3 heat level option for how spicy, you can see that the same level of thought has gone into the food as well. But whereas the design, ambience and service succeed completely, the food falls just short of the standard of everything else.
Perhaps the surroundings gave me an unrealistic level of expectation, or perhaps Indonesian food just doesn't do it for me, but I just wasn't 'wowed'. The food was very good, and I did enjoy it. I just wanted it to be better.
Well worth the money (seriously, compared to home, it's an absolute bargain) and I'd go back, and recommend you go too. A whole lot better than the owners other restaurant La Lucciola. But taste wise I rate it as "very good" rather than "excellent". Same goes for the cocktails - good, not great. But do go and see for yourselves. Even if the food is just short of "wow", the remainder more than makes up for it.
