We had breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner at Mase and were impressed every time.
Some of the best coffee is to be had here. It was worth ordering the siphoned Kintamani coffee just to watch them put it together for you. And I have to say that AUD$4.50 was a small price to pay for the amount of effort it takes for them to make the coffee at your table. My friend also said that her mocha was the best she had ever had. The papaya and pineapple juices are just wonderful - refreshing and not too sweet. My mojito was a bit of a disappointment - I have had much better in Queenstown, New Zealand and Las Vegas, USA. My mocktail was actually much tastier! My friend enjoyed her martini - apparently, it was almost neat but it was delicious. If you enjoy wines, they have an extensive wine range and I am happy to report that there are quite a few wines from Western Australia where we are from! :)
The satay lilit was wonderfully balanced in flavour. The pancakes were the thickest, fluffiest and most perfectly textured I have ever had (crispy edges and fluffy middles!) and the salted caramel dribbled on it was just fabulous. The bubur ayam (chicken rice porridge) was creamy in texture and the fish and peanuts that it's served with completes it in terms of texture and flavour. The brioche french toast was inhalable and all the pastries are buttery and fluffy. Look, we felt like Goldilocks - it was just right...
I could go on and on about the food being delicious. Nothing was a let down except for my mojito. The decor in Mase is actually quite good. The only drawback occurred when we sat down just under one of the televisions and the football was blaring over head but we just shifted to a table outdoors and everything was great. The outdoor dining catered to people who just wanted to lounge and to people who wanted to sit at a table for a meal. Even though the restaurant is almost on the roadside, the restaurant and the outdoor dining area is quiet and tranquil. You feel secluded and secreted away from the world. It's tranquil and relaxing. There is a live band on Wednesdays and we really enjoyed their performance. It really added something extra to the already magical tropical atmosphere.
The service is better than at any fine dining restaurant I have experienced in Australia. They will help in any way they can. The staff adjust their waiting behaviours according to the time of day. They are quite chatty during breakfast and have an amazing ability to put us at ease and gear us up for the day's events at the same time. During the evening, they are incredibly attentive but completely unobtrusive. They are chameleons who blend into the background but are always on hand the moment you look like you need something. I can't wait to return to Bali, to Maca Villas and Spa and to Mase Restaurant.
Well done, Mase! Well done!
