We had a great stay in this Villa for 5 days. The rooms are spacious, even the bathroom are spacious with natural lighting. The problem is the location its quite secluded and it doesn't have a restaurant that guest has to go out at night to eat dinner and you have to take a cab. But generally the place is peaceful and the service is great

Room Tip: All rooms are located in front of the pool. Bring your own adapter because the hotel doesn't pr...

It is a beautiful place, really. Just like how the previous reviews praise about Uma Karan, we are extremely impressed and satisfied by our stay here. If i could rate the service, i would give it a 10 out of 5 stars. Out of many hotels i've been to, never before i've came across such family-like service. They look out and take care of you as if you're family. At least that's what i felt. So much warmth, so much love. When we go on an outing, we get wishes of concern, "Be careful!", and Eka (one of the amazing group of staff with a hearty attitude) would stand at the entrance, looking at us while we rode away on our scooter. One morning we came back from the beach with our shoes all covered with sand. We washed our shoes clean with Eka's help, and we went back to our room after, leaving our shoes at the doorstep, under the shade to dry. The next moment we stepped out of the door, our shoes were on the grass patch, sun shining down right on them. It was Eka whom moved the shoes.

Norina and Ratna (whom is 5 months pregnant) helped us with many errands, answering our questions very patiently with a smile, calling, enquiring and booking Odyssey surf school (at kuta) for our surfing lessons, and filling us with much needed information and directions to get to the places we want to go. Eka even hand-drew a minimap (we didn't even ask for one) to guide us!! We were simply amazed by all of these humble, genuine people, and their spontaneous concern towards us.

Breakfasts were all fabulous, well-prepared, healthy (not oily) yet delicious, right on time for delivery to our room. Our favourite was the mie goreng. Beautifully simple would be a good way to describe the breakfasts we had.

Hidden away from all the noise, crowd and parties of seminyak, legian and kuta, Uma Karan is simply just sooooooo welcoming!! So peaceful, so serene, so warm, so cosy. It's an amazing feeling to just come back to all these lovely people and environment after a tiring day of adventure, challenges (looking for directions while driving the scooter on extremely crowded roads, rejecting and negotiating with people trying to scam us at legian etc.)

So yup, Uma Karan well deserves this.

Besides this,

Uma Karan offers scooter rentals at - 55000 IDR for 24 hours.
Get petrol at street stalls at about 5000/6000 IDR per litre. We received the scooter at an almost empty fuel level, bought 5 litres in total that lasted us for about 50km of driving (we drove to kuta, 12km to-and-fro, and Sanur, 34.6km to-and-fro, at Jalan Matahar Terbit for the sunrise) There were people at legian trying to scam us for 120,000 IDR for 2 litres. It's simply disgusting. Most locals are very friendly, stopping at a traffic light and turning our heads to ask another motorist for directions is something we do very often while we find our way. Keep asking to further confirm your direction, because you might just end up in a maze of small roads and turns. Scooter's very convenient, challenging and adventurous as compared to just taking taxis, though be extremely careful on the busy, traffic messy roads! Wear a good filtering mask, it's like an exhaust fume buffet on the roads.

Ultimo (amazing, affordable italian restaurant) and many other artistic boutiques and food places just 10 minutes drive from Uma Karan. You can ask the Uma Karan staff for directions i'm sure they will glady help.

We got temporary tattoos at the seminyak beach area as well. Initially the artist tried to scam us at 1200,000 IDR (about 160 SGD, which in singapore we can already get a permanent one), we asked for 90,000 IDR and negotiated till 120,000 IDR, a ten-fold difference!! How obvious that they were trying to scam as tourists, so be very careful. My temporary tattoo gave me a mild burning sensation hours after the application. And it felt uncomfortable. I researched about it and i come to think that the tattoo i got is something called 'black henna', which is the original henna (red, brown, orange in colour) mixed with a toxic chemical known as PPD (para-phenylendiamine) that can possibly cause burns, blisters, welts and a permanent scarring. I had no blisters or whatsoever, just a very mild, lasting burning sensation that lasted for about 2 days, so i guess mine isn't very serious. When run under warm water or under hot sun, the tattooed area burns painfully. So be careful, really. Check this out for some info on black henna, http://www.hennapage.com/henna/ppd/, or you can simply do your own research.

We visited a money changer (a proper medium sized shop, white walls and at seminyak area, near the crowded rows of restaurants, and changed our SGD at a very good rate with no scams. However when we walked pass some money changers at kuta area, they seemed more dark, shady, offering a better exchange rate than we got in seminyak, but i think these are the ones full of tricks up their sleeves with the intention to scam tourists. Check this out, http://www.travelfish.org/blogs/indonesia/2011/10/01/money-changing-scams-in-bali/

Also there were people selling 'magic mushrooms' at kuta, it's a drug like thing with effects i highly recommend you research on before deciding to consume it. Go along with people you really trust if not you may get into trouble such as being robbed or raped.

We thoroughly enjoyed our adventurous trip, other than the scams, Have a fun trip!

My wife and I travel frequently to Bali from Sydney and often stopover at a budget hotel (after the late flight) before travelling to Ubud the following day. We do this to avoid the $400+ one night stay that would commence at 11pm in Ubud.

We stayed at the Uma Karan just after it opened. What a find, well set out rooms, excellent staff, and pool and in-room facilities well above its price range.

We have recommended Uma Karan to our friends requiring an overnight stay and also to our children on a tighter budget for extended stays.

Well done to the Staff and management, look forward to staying with you again.

Very clean and well kept villa. Very accommodative staff, always willing to go the extra mile to assist you. The pool area is very relaxing. Food and convenient stores are about 10 mins walk. A little far from Kuta but if you have rented a bike, thats not an issue. The area is quiet and suitable for those who want to run away from the city buzz. We will definitely be back.

My partner and i recently spent 5 beautiful days at Uma Karan, tucked away from the hustle & bustle it was a perfect escape when we had enough of the traffic & heat. the staff were so helpful- nothing is too much trouble. with only ten rooms most of the time we felt we were in a private villa. the hotel is only a year old so is very fresh and clean, cleanliness+++. Take a brochure with the map on the back as some taxi were not sure of address, but head for burger king on sunset road and it is well signed from there. the few dollars taxi fare ($3- seminyak shops, $5 AUD to Kuta) was well worth it to feel you are in a different world. Breakfast basic but good, omelette was fantastic. Absolute luxury for the budget conscious will return again and again. wifi a little inconsistent due to weather but this is just Bali. Enjoy!!!

Room Tip: With only 10 rooms you can't get a bad one.

My partner & I recently traveled to Bali & spent the majority of our trip in Seminyak at this beautiful hotel...We were so pleasantly surprised to find this hotel was tucked away from the hustle and bustle without being isolated and only a few minutes walk to anything you could possibly need!! We were so happy to avoid the touristy area where all the resorts which lack personality live. Uma Karan is an unbeatable hotel for value and friendly atmosphere. With only 10 rooms, you feel like there is plenty of privacy but with the genuine nature that comes with attentive and caring staff. I want to say "DONT GO" so it stays our own little secret, but that wouldn't be fair to the hardworking staff...so, Go! It is beautiful...a lovely clean pool, excellent brekky, clean rooms, fantastic aircon and nothing is too much trouble. Winner. Will definitely go back and wouldn't waste time looking/trolling through all other hotels, just stay here.

Room Tip: There is no fitness centre but didn't want to lower the score ****
