Well off we went to do our cooking class in Seminyak, which is so close. Four of us decided to do it. We went to the markets in Denpassar and then back to the restaurant to start learning and cooking. I learnt so much about the Indonesian vegetables, fruits and spices. The class was hands on, so filleting fish, cutting up chickens, etc. The staff cooked the food and we ate. We were given a fantastic well informed cook book to take home of which I have used and it all tastes the same as what we ate. Would highly recommend this class and they also do a seafood cooking class which I cannot wait to do on my return to Bali. Fantastic Day. Thanks Dean.

My friend and I attended Dean's Badung Spice cooking class on 21 November. Dean's knowledge of the local ingredients is extensive and his enthusiasm for the local cuisine was obvious. The visit to the market was fantastic and really interesting. Dean and his really friendly staff demonstrated a great number of dishes and we had some hands on experience in the food prep. We came away with a great recipe book, full of the demonstrated recipes. All the food was beautifully presented and really delicious. If Dean would divulge the recipe for his coconut ice-cream, he'd be my friend for life!! This is a great class for both the beginner and the advanced cook in a relaxed and friendly environment; we had a lot of fun.

Our first foray into cooking classes in Bali, despite having visited many times. We chose the Balinese Badung Spices class and we were very impressed. Dean is a delightful host. Whilst we had visited the Denpasar markets on a number of occasions ourselves, going with someone to identify the multitude of fresh ingredients and how they are used was wonderful. Back at the restaurant, we had an fun afternoon making spice pastes, wrestling with fish to fillet them, dissecting chickens, and having a good laugh with our fellow class members. The culminating feast on all Dean had prepared, with our brilliant support, was wonderful and we did not need dinner. Understanding the versatility of the spice pastes we created was a highlight and will be put to good use. The dessert of coconut icecream with sticky black rice was simply outstanding.

Dean is brilliant, a very amusing and knowledgeable guy. Dean takes you on a trip to the local market where you can admire the sheer range of food on this beautiful island. Then it's back to his restaurant where you learn to cook it! Most crucially his food tastes great.

After having been to several cooking classes in Bali, Dean's would have to be my favourite. His introduction to and explanation of spices, fresh ingredients, technicalities was so well balanced. The cooking school is perfect: we kicked off the day with a great visit to Denpasar's main market. Upon return, it was aprons on, and Dean had a fleet of helpers that balanced out the level of interaction of the students. What a wonderful and productive day spent! I will definitely come back and do another class soon.
