Owner description: Surfcamps and Surfaris in Bali - from Surfers by surfers - with more than 15 years experience and local knowledge
Reviewed May 15, 2012

First of all, I have to tell the readers that I am a pain in the neck guy, an attitude I probably inherited from my late father. Or it is simply because I am from Belgium.

It all started with requesting availability for a surf camp in Bali. I checked several vendors in Bali and contacted all of them. As being a pain in the neck client, I wanted to know everything about everything.

I got answers from all I had contacted but one of them was more fast, more detailed, and – strange enough – seemed to enjoy answering my silly questions. These guys I chose finally, KIMA.

Being there I could not change myself, although being in a totally different environment. I did not want to have this ingredient in my food, but wanted this instead. I had so many questions in the water with the surf instructors, that I got the nick name “talking Jason” from them. Although I had decided for one camp, I wanted to change to another (from the same vendor), I wanted to extend, I wanted to leave earlier, decided at one moment in time that I prefer a fan instead of an AC, etc. etc.

What impressed me most that I was welcomed by every person in the camp organization with a smile, be it waiter, cleaning staff, reception, surf dudes, office guys, whoever. And although I had the most stupid, most extraordinary wishes at the most inappropriate moment, they were all so friendly and helpful, and never left me with the impression me being a pain for them.

Apart from all this, I had an excellent time there. I have been to the Camp Canggu, Seminyak, and Lembongan. Rooms, surf guiding, especially , service, food, all was great, and the value for the price I paid is amazing.

I have to admit, I found a second home there, I will surely come back. Guys you make a great job, keep on doing like this, you changed my life.

OK, let me start by saying I have never written a review about anything online. This camp prompted me to do so. I stayed at Balangan, the southern part of the island, and it was run by this guy Lars from Kima. Now, the first thing that threw me was that he could not surf. I was told through email before arrival that this particular camp was for very experienced surfers. GREAT I though... Talked to Lars the day I got there, he seemed like he could handle his own out there. Doubtful! Anything over head high sent him crying back to the beach, forcing you to come with him, cutting your surfing time in half. It was quite sad. I was also told through email that they had 30 boards to rent from. (I had been traveling through the area for a while and didn't want to lug a board around). Actual number was closer to 6. Boards in pretty beat up shape as well. But back to Lars. This is supposed to be a professional surf camp run by experienced surfers. Its a very bad image when the guy who is supposed to have local knowledge and should, lets hope, be able to do a bottom turn maybe, is unable to do so. The other thing that threw me was that about 3-4 of the 7 nights I stayed there, Lars went to Kuta and came back just in time for the morning session, about 5:30. He would then drive us all, still pretty drunk, to go surfing. Maybe thats why he wasn't able to surf.

This is solely a portrayal of my stay with the camp. I hope there are better instructors that work there and perhaps don't drive guests drunk. All in all, a very big letdown, much too expensive. If you go to Bali, rent a small room with AC, a motorbike and explore the island on your own.

BTW, if the owner of Kima reads this and wants to get rid of Lars and hire me, let me know. Just kidding, Bali is too hot.
