“If you have to stay in Seminyak...”
Reviewed May 6, 2014

The highlight of my trip to Bali was Ubud. I wasn't really impressed by the beach in Seminyak, but I spent a night there before flying out the following day.

The entrance to W Retreat is really nice. A green tunnel taking you away from the rest of Seminyak. On check-in, the staff were really friendly. We weren't really happy with our room so we contacted management and were upgraded to a 1 bedroom villa.

The restaurants in the resort have great food and the bar serves some tasty drinks. We ended up spending most of our time in the resort and enjoyed relaxing by our pool and didn't really bother wandering around Seminyak.

Well, nothing more needed to say, my one night stay there was simply the best ever in Bali....almost spent my entire day lounging by the pool and the beach, enjoying the gorgeous view , drinks and food and fantastic service.
And the sunset, simply one of the most amazing ones anywhere in the world.
A bit pricey, yet totally worth it.

My boyfriend and i stayed at W hotel for 4 nights. I think W is a very good hotel chain and our overall experience was good here. Rooms are very spacious and nicely decorated.

Two things we were not so satisfied with our stay:
- TV in our room wasn't working on the third night, we were a bit annoyed because you seldom encounter this in a 5 star hotel? The hotel did offer us to change to a better room but it was a hassle for us
- two main restaurants were both offering sunday lunch buffet and we would have thought the hotel should offer us a choice for a la carte meal during lunch...

Things that i liked:
- very friendly and attentive staff in the resort
- breakfast at FIRE was very good
- sunset view is very nice in this hotel compared to other hotels on the Seminyak beach

A few things that are noteworthy if it is the first time you're traveling to Bali and planning to stay at W:
- do arrange the V I P immigration service with W at the peak season, the airport is new in Bali but the queues have never been improved...
- the swimming pool is very nice but W has a lot of outside visitors so it could sometimes be a nuisance if you want to chill by the pool just to relax..

Loved this place! The staff could not do enough.

We booked this after staying for a few days in Ubud for our wedding anniversary.

We booked a pool villa, check in was easy and we were escorted by a lovely guy called rich who was full of enthusiasm. in our villa, they had set up the room with rose petals in a heart shape on the bed and a wedding anniversary martini cocktail was waiting for us, nice touch! We loved all the attention to detail in the room, the selection of toiletries, even having suncream and flipflops for us, this was villa 58, we noted that there was a building site behind but we were so excited about our hols that we headed out to the woobar for a cocktail to start off the trip and thought nothing more.
The next morning, there was constant building noise, i couldnt relax with banging going on and then saw that our villa wasnt private at all, i could wave at the builders! We spoke to reception and they moved us later that day to no.43, it was so tranquil and not overlooked, bliss!
We made full use of whatever, whenever and there was nothing they didnt do, all of our dinner reservations were organised with ease and nothing too much trouble. On the friday night there was sandy riviera playing at the woobar, we asked if we could reserve an area, as villa guests we were told we could organise, they gave us the cabana right next to the dj booth, it was amazing, they looked after us so well, we had full table service all night, it made it a great experience.
We had spa treatments which were also great and in a lovely contemporary setting.
On our last day due to the change in villa they kindly gave us a late check out till 2 and then gave us a room in the main hotel for the day as our flight wasnt until midnight, it made our last day so much better!
If it wasnt for being put in the 'dud villa' first id give them 5 out of 5, i dont think they should put anyone down that end until the work is over or at least offer a heavily reduced rate, saying that though when the work is done the villa will still be overlooked. Just as a note the garden view room they put us in after had a building site right next to it, i wouldnt be happy being put there either.
All in all a fantastic stay, it was our first trip to bali but loved every minute of it and will be back!

Room Tip: If you can pay the extra stay in a villa, request it away from the building work.

Hello klaidler,

Thank you for sharing your valuable feedback. I am delighted to hear that you received the level of service standard I would expect. There is a lot of buliding work currently taking place in Bali, we do ensure that any distrubtion is kept to a minimum.

We look forward to welcoming you back soon for more wow moments at W Retreat & Spa Bali.

The W Retreat is a very trendy hotel. We stayed in a level 4 Ocean facing room that had a fantastic view and every mod-con you could think of, including a retractable roof for a bathroom skylight. We enjoyed some great afternoons on our balcony watching the sunset with a wine in our hand.

Whilst the rooms are great, there isn't much greenery at W, so if you like your traditional Bali hotel filled with gardens, this isn't the place for you. Also, the hotel pool is very shallow and the volcanic rock used for the pool makes it look like a bit like a pond.

The cost is a downside, the rooms are quite pricey and the food and drink are very expensive for Bali. A juice in our mini bar cost around $13AUD!

The location of the W Retreat is another negative. Whilst its located in Seminyak, it's not that close to the popular bars of Seminyak. The pathways (or lack thereof) make walking around the area quite difficult, so we found ourselves taxiing everywhere.

Overall we enjoyed our stay at the W Retreat, as the room and view were fantastic, but I much prefer the traditional 'green' Bali, so probably wouldn't return to stay at this hotel.

Room Tip: Choose a level 4 or higher, ocean-facing room.

Hello Rosylosy,

Many thanks for your Tripadvisor review, it is important to always receive a balanced view point of each guests stay.

We are sorry that you did not enjoy your experience. W Retreat and Spa Bali is definitely different from every other hotel on the island, and our success is based on the fact that we are a modern interpretation of the Balinese culture, and offer a very different experience to that of traditional hotels. We understand that there are people who don’t like this approach, but there are also others who find it a refreshing change and have helped build our business success to date.

I do hope that your next trip to Bali offers up that cultural experience that you were looking for. should you wish to return please do reach out to me so that I can oversee your visit. You will be pleased to hear that we now have pathway awaiting your arrival!

All the best,

Craig Seaward

If you're looking for a traditional Balinese villa experience, with tons of local character, exclusively Balinese food and a view overlooking a river in Ubud, you won't find that here. But if a stay at a gorgeous contemporary resort with an unbelievably friendly staff and the comforts of home in a developing country is what you're after, you can't go wrong with the W. From Craig the GM to Ari the fantastic mixologist at WooBar (which has a great two-for-one sunset happy hour M-T, btw) and Lee at Starfish Bloo, there were countless employees (the hotel reportedly has about 600) that seemed 100% dedicated to ensuring that we had a fantastic stay.

Staff aside, the property is perfect. It's clear that Starwood spared no expense. Everything from the gym equipment to the furniture in guest rooms (including the fantastic bed) is of very high quality. The multi-tiered pool is also amazing, as are the super-comfy bean bags positioned throughout (there are more than enough lounge chairs, too). Also, we always felt very safe in Bali, but the W takes security far more seriously than any other venue we've been to on the island. There's a bag check if you're coming in from the beach and a handheld explosives detector in use at the main gate. No detail is overlooked.

Room Tip: We loved our Marvelous Suite, but whichever room you go with, make sure it's facing the ocean.

Yes all the amenities were flash, rooms designed within an inch of themselves - grounds, pool, view all amazing - but it was missing something for us & that was the Bali feel.
I'm not use to seeing so many chicky babes get dressed so fabulously for breaky, hair coiffed, make-up done, heals on - don't get me wrong - I always put in an effort, but tropical island holiday breakfast attire for me does not involve looking as though I'm ready for a ball. :-) Also said 'teatering chickies' were noticed to quickly claim many poolside loungers with towels, sunscreen, mags & books etc to make them look as though they were in use - then disappear off into Seminyak for the morning - very rude! Should have only a 1 hour max save on the pool loungers.
Another issue for us was the security checks every single time we came in - it was so annoying, surely guests should have a swipe card that lets them through without having to wait in traffic lines.
Perfect hotel for the nervous traveller who doesn't want to leave the western world!
