“Unwind in most quiet beach resort”
Reviewed November 4, 2011

Beautiful resort in middle of nowhere, ideal for a getaway!
Comes with many facilities along with beach resort which you may not usually find like attached golf course, movie multiplex and a shopping mall.
Very nice restaurants with extreme good quality food at almost no cost, very sumptuous buffet lunch/dinner. Spend weekend swinging club at its driving range, walk on a beach all evening...just enjoy the solitude the way you like!

Room Tip: beach facing room or negotiate for villa

Been in Brunei for business many times and I decided to spend 2 nights at the Empire.

The hotel is like a beach resort, designed by someone used to build King palaces. The reception is impressive, with golden leaves covering columns and roof beams.
The rooms are less impressive though.

Main building rooms are a little worn out and in need of some refurbishment especially in the wooden furniture and in the fixtures. Some of the corridors of the main building can be terrifyingly empty in the morning, with a eerie low light.

There are some other buildings with better and newer rooms, but most of them are 70% empty during most of the year with some of the floors with even the light off.

Apart from this the swimming pool and the resort facility are decent, the bowling is almost always empty and can be a fun activity for one or two hours.

Restaurants are in lack of creativity and food is really mediocre with the only exception of the breakfast buffet that is really good.

Room Tip: Upper floor of some of the detached buildings, with full sea view. Be sure they give you a full sea...

Whilst I was very impressed with the building, surroundings, views and the rather opulent interior, I reckon the hotel's service level was not as I would expect from a 5 star hotel. Here are some reasons why:

1. Internet was slow on one day of my stay. I called the service line and was told that 'maybe there were problems with the provider; it's not the hotel's issue.' I replied 'why don't you call the provider and see what's going on'. She replied, 'Ummm, OK.' I never heard from her again and the internet did not improve until the next day.

2. Staff at the main restaurant were not attentive and alert enough. I have seen at least two staff members texting away on their cell phones! I have also seen this with the bellmen at the main door.

3. When I arrived, no one offered to help me with my bags. In fact, no one opened the door for us.

4. Food selection (breakfast and dinner) at the buffet was rather poor. Breakfast presentation was definitely not very appealing.

5. It took them almost half an hour to deliver me some paper and a pen!

On the plus side, the rooms were very big and the views from the ocean wing was definitely worth the extra money. The spa was not exactly luxurious but the (Empire Signature) massage was beyond my expectation!

I am not sure where the reviewers stayed who have commented on the place being run down. Having stayed there twice now over a couple of years, we have no issue with the quality of the fixtures and fittings. You might get picky, but as I was on holiday, I was there to relax, not inspect the details. The "beach pool" is currently undergoing renovations, but the other pools were not overly stretched. We had no problem with either the quality or the quantity of food nor the services of the staff.

If any one has ever stayed at this fabulous hotel you will concur with me that this is one Fantastic Hotel with a great location just outside of the capital Brunei. Each room has a balcony and almost all have a sea view. The rooms are quite spacious and have all the amenities of a five star property.

The breakfast buffet was OK and the selections were good. But we had lunch and dinner at the other restaurants that dot the resort and each meal was quite poor and tasteless. On top of it all meals were extremely expensive...

Great place to stay but do eat downtown. Find my review on the best choices in Brunei or also called: Bandar Seru Begawan.

Room Tip: We enjoyed the Sea Front Complex as it seemed to have the best view and sound of the sea!!

The Empire hotel is a little run down but certainly the best place to stay in Brunei. You can tell immediately when you walk in it is pure luxury Las Vegas style. With the grand entrance it appears to be beautiful. But like the reviews say, there are signs of aging. The resort is very spread out. The work out room is about a 10-15 minute walk or a couple minutes by golf cart. The beaches were under construction but the pools were amazing. The food is expensive and unfortunately it is no where near anything. It's about a $35USD taxi ride from the airport and about 20 minutes to the city center. I would recommend renting a car if you are staying here. Renting a car is about $70USD a day so that's just there and back to the city once. There's lots of entertainment, including some shopping, bowling, workout classes, movie theater, etc. It worth staying here, especially for the price.

I would recommend seeing Brunei for a day or two. Its an interesting city but would only recommend it to the ones well traveled. Its unlike any country in Asia but it's not very interesting if you haven't seen the rest of Asia

Room Tip: We were recommended to stay in the main building that the lobby is attached to. We didn't see t...

Ok so the sultans brother built this place. The surroundings are very nice but don't choose this place as a beach vacation as the water is quite murky. the food is not close to 5 4 or 3 star. Avoid breakfast avoid all restaurants except italian and chinese ( both these were great).
The rooms are very nice the facilities bowling movie theatre badminton tennis and golf are absolutely fabulous. the golf course especially beautifully manicured and not a soul on the course. I am 55 years old paid about 53$ includes cart(seniors rate) don't miss this course.
oh yeah bring your own booze due to muslim country rules of no sales of liquor
