We spent an evening at this Lodge a short while back. We were shown to the Master suite but unfortunately it was not what we expected. We could not open the door or windows as they were frosted over, which made me feel a little cramped. We decided to make a nice cup of tea to settle in but unfortunately there was no kettle. When the kettle arrived I found that my glass was dirty. All a little unsettling and then to crown it all there was no remote so the T.V. did not work as well. However, it all turned out well as the lady who was the chef came to our assistance and offered us a cottage instead. The cottage was really cute and spacious and we were glad to move in there. I would recommend the cottages to anyone as they are really comfortable and surrounded by a lovely garden. One little point that I feel I must mention is that the cleaning lady was already in our bedroom after we came back from breakfast which was a little unsettling as I would of preferred going to the bathroom without knowing that there was another person in the cottage.
Would I go back there? Yes I would as I am sure that these little grievances could easily be sorted out.

Room Tip: The cottages.

Some friends and I were looking for a holiday with some good food, good wine and a chance to unwind. This is exactly what we got at 5mountains lodge. After a few days in Cape Town we were looking forward to getting somewhere a little calmer!

The location is stunning. Surrounded by vineyards you really couldn’t ask for a nicer setting. We had a very friendly welcome from all of the staff; they had the balance just right of being available if we needed them but not too imposing. The cabins we stayed in were very clean, beautifully neutrally decorated and a good size. There was a fridge in the room which had a good choice of snacks and drinks.

We ate at the restaurant for the majority of the week because the food and wine (which is made from the property’s own vineyards) was very good. We did try a local restaurant which is within walking distance which was also good. The locals are very friendly and will take time to talk to you.

Some wine tasting obviously had to be done so we tried a few of the local wineries which had some very good wine and cheeses. A massage in the spa at 5mountains is also a must.

An excellent holiday – will definitely go back.

Friendly staff, comfortable accommodation, delicious meals and relaxing environment. Also enjoyed fabulous massage treatments at on-site spa. Really enjoyed our week at 5 Mountains and would recommend it unreservedly.

For my first visit to South Africa this was the perfect place for me and my friends to chill out and recharge our batteries. The first thing we saw was the stunning gardens that were kept imaculately and the lovely inviting pool! The individual cabins were stylish, bright and airy, beautifully decorated and ideal for groups or families as there was plenty of room. They were cleaned daily with fresh towels and mini bar, which included wine that was made from the vines onsite.

The on-site restaurant is great for breakfast lunch and dinner, with good options for everyone including vegetarian and when we couldn't get a booking one evening the staff were very helpful with finding us a reservation with another local restaurant. The restaurant itself is also bright and airy and would be fantastic as a wine tasting party/wedding or any kind of function, its so versatile and staff are happy to cater for any occasion/requirement.

The four of us decided to take advantage of the on-site spa where we had lovely relaxing massages and manicures, the staff were so attentive and the treatments amazing! The treatment rooms again are beautifully decorated and felt very private.

The whole week we felt very well looked after by the staff who were always very friendly and helpful with everytyhing we needed, suggesting local wineries for us to visit and also providing a personal wine tasting on-site!, even the gardener Lional always greeted us with a smile.

This was the perfect little peice of paradise for us to soak up the South African sun, experience the wine lands and totally recharge, none of us wanted to leave and my partner and I are already saving up to go back!

I would reccomend it to anyone looking for a pamper holiday with the girls or a romantic getaway and its also ideal for families as its very central to local towns and only a 40 minutes drice from CapeTown.

5 Mountains Lodge has so much potential but unfortunately it falls short and shouldn't be ranked a four star lodge. We arrived at check-in and were shown to our room (cottage), which was neat and clean on arrival, with a large double bed, bar fridge (reasonably priced) and very small tv. The bathroom didn't have a shower, (not even an over bath shower) nor hand/hair towels. As we'd already been told that there was only one other couple staying at the lodge, we asked for a room with a shower but were told it wasn't ready and it had two single beds. They said they'd come back to us if we could move into that room, but they didn't mention it again or offer to accommodate us at all. The bath towels were very worn and didn't smell fresh and the bath mat had bleach stains.

We decided to go lie out at the pool and unlike the pics there were no umbrellas and the deck chairs seemed worn. The pool towels we received were also worn and tatty. With the clouds moving in we decided to lounge in the "Zen Garden" which had a jacuzzi. However the jacuzzi bath was ice cold, as it was apparently sun heated.

Dinner at "Grove Restaurant" was included in our package. Once seated we were offered a set menu of two choices per course and red or white wine. The waitress wasn't sure what varietal the red or white was but we opted for red anyway, and had a 2002 Nelson Estate. The food was fine and very homestyle cooking - nothing amazing, but enjoyable. The waitress did make mention that it was her birthday and asked if we were going to give her anything which seemed a bit out of place. Also, at check out, we were charged extra for having three courses instead of two. It was never mentioned to us that we'd be charged extra or that our package only included two courses.

Breakfast was standard with a basic full english and continental on offer (good croissants). Treatments at the Spa were good, although both ran a little shorter than the time allocated.

The negatives highlighted are petty and could be easily addressed by management. Care given to the quality of the finishes, the service and food offered make an establishment 4 star graded - this fell short in those departments. It was, however, a comfortable stay with wholesome food.

As owner/managers of 5 Mountains we unreservedly apologise that you’ve had this experience. We pride ourselves in giving a luxurious, intimate experience with real attention to detail, which makes your feedback all the more disappointing.

As you know we have been in touch with you to make you aware of the exceptional circumstances that we faced that weekend. The lessons that we have taken away are that our stand in staff were clearly unable to meet our high standards. Whilst we don’t expect to face the circumstance where all our management staff are away, we will ensure that we have a more robust contingency plan in place to prevent any repeat of the experience that you have reported.

Kind regards

Carole
