“Why go anywhere else?”
Reviewed May 13, 2013

There are a lot of places to choose from in Swellendam, and we choose this one as part of our honeymoon. So glad we did, too! Staying 3 nights in Swellendam is not only a suggestion, but a must. Fortuatenly we read enough on Augusta to warrent staying more than a night, and fortunately we hit two nights they were open for dinner. Not only was each of the two nights different, but totally different. Some places you eat 5 courses, you "taste" what is in common, sort of the signature of the chef. But not here. Each course was unique (which makes 10 courses over the two nights), and a flavour sensation. It was too bad for the people on one of the three nights they weren't open for evening meal. They don't know what they missed and the guys don't compromise. They aren't in it for the money, u know. This should be a drawcard for the whole area. Yum Yum Yum Yum Yum.

Back home in Blighty we think back with much fondness about our stay in SA. And the place which really stole our hearts was this one. I am so glad our agent insisted that we stay here for 2 nights. SHe promised that it would be a highlight and it was. Henk and Michel ensured that we had the best stay possible. Food from the African Kitchen is excellent and the suites are truly well decorated. We were sad to leave and would very much like to return on our next visit to SA.

We decided that if we wrote a review of any other place in South Afirca it would pale by comparison. Everything else would only get 4 stars out of 5. So we saved the best for last and we discovered the most amazing pop up restaurant you could ever imagine. Thank goodness that when we checked in they told us they were only cooking the next night, and they convinced us to stay the two. What a delight. Well done guys. To the rest of the world, this is one of the top meals I've eaten in my life. All 5 courses were great, and all so different. Stay the two nights - the boys will take care of you!

Room Tip: all different. we stayed in the one with the outside shower. so we had steam rising around us!

There are advantages to seeing the 'season' out. In our case we were treated to an upgrade and our secluded hill top cottage suite with private patio was the best accommodation of the whole holiday! Views from our front door were to die for. Such a shame we only planned to stay one night!
On arrival we were greeted by the proprietors Michel and Henk with a relaxing coffee in their historic home whilst our bags were taken to our suite for us. After a good rest and chat Michel guided us through meandering pathways (like a magical mystery tour) of laid red bricks and crazy paving to our accommodation. (This part is all up hill and the crazy paving pathway is level but made up of uneven stones so ladies, wear flat shoes or walk on your toes!) We passed other pathways over little humpback bridges leading to more accommodations, secret seating areas, the generous pool area with sun loungers draped with towels ready for our use and continued on up to our suite. (It was worth every step!) The lounge kitchenette, generous bedroom area, well-appointed vanity with double sink, walk-in shower and separate bath was beautifully decorated and coordinated. The photos on their website are very good examples of what you’ll find. Every attention to detail was given from the ‘Augusta de Mist’ selection of Music CDs (personally compiled by Henk) to the specially prepared complimentary refreshment rusks and toiletries. (If in doubt, when venturing out the maze of paves, just keep going downhill through the beautifully planned reclaimed garden, which leads you to the main house).
The proprietors Michel and Henk were very generous hosts and introduced us to the local history and how their property fits into that historic picture. It’s within an easy walk to historic Swellendam; just following the old oaks down ‘Swellendam Street’ that survived the fire. They also, had pre-booked us in for diner at a delicious Italian restaurant that evening.
Breakfast the next day did not disappoint either. We chose to sit outside although breakfast could have been served inside this beautifully resorted 19th-century Cape Dutch estate. There was a cold breakfast buffet available inside. First, the Fruit salad filled with exotic fruit, toast and homemade preserves, then a cooked breakfast of your choice (I had perfect eggs and delicious crispy bacon) all with coffee or tea and fruit juice of your choice.
Augusta de Mist is a luxurious respite in the 3rd oldest settlement in South Africa for the uninitiated traveler hurriedly passing on the Garden Route between Plettenberg Bay and Cape Town. Don’t pass it up. It’s truly worth the break in your journey and a treat for yourself. We can highly recommend it.

We could not have been more thrilled with August de Mist. The property is spectacular (it really is as gorgeous at the website leads you to believe). The owners are truly gifted hosts.

Do yourself a favor - don't eat dinner anywhere else. We had so many wonderful meals during our 2 week trip through South Africa, but dinner at Augusta de Mist was my favorite!

This place is a perfect example of why I love small, individual, owner-managed proporties. We will definitely go back on our next trip! (And I'm sorry it took my so long to write this review!)

Call it a Goldilocks effect or whatever you want. Everything is just right. The guys are available and responsive, the food is excellent, the location is perfect and the rooms are truly lovely. When you do a roadtrip through the Cape you get a pretty good idea of what the general level of standard is an ADM is a notch above the all the rest. Great recommendations for lunch and dinner, and of course the meal at the in-house restaurant was great. I think the word I am looking for is "generority" - of spirit and place.

I need to give a shout-out to Henk & Michel for the amazing time we had with them. Such a great place - magical gardens and excellent dinner as well as perhaps the best red blend of our trip. Dont even look elsewhere - Augusta de Mist is great value and you will regret spending one night only, so book two nights. Coming back in December 13 for sure.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
One of the most beautiful guesthouses in Swellendam, on South Africa's Garden Route. Experience stylish living on a large country retreat. It is the biggest dilemma you are faced with when visiting Augusta de Mist: where do you sit? The pool area is perfect with a large willow tree and the kind of privacy that encourages you to shed the layers and have a cocktail. But then privacy is even greater in the small fynbos forest at the top of the property where you can climb a hand-hewn stairway to a fine view of the Overberg. Of course just the thought of all that hiking on the grounds makes the fountain on the front lawns quite a good bet for a good old sit and much more civilised. Speaking of civilised, you may as well take tea on the stoep while sitting and take in the lawns, rose bushes and giant trees. Or just sit on the lawn. But what about the picnic clearing in the fynbos forest, around wine cellar or even just the lounge in your suite? Such is life in the country. There are not enough days on the average visit to sit in all the available spaces and congratulate yourself on a perfect choice. Augusta de Mist is a 4-star retreat set on 1.5 Ha of eclectic fynbos. The country estate in typical Cape fashion boasts a deeply romantic 1802 Cape Dutch National Monument with more original features than you can shake a stick at. The shutters are yellowwood and the ironmongery original, as are the reed ceilings held together with 200+ year-old mud and clay. This manor building forms the social hub of the estate housing both the guest lounge and dining rooms. It also plays host to a Heritage Suite (where Desmond Tutu stayed in October 2013), which pays homage to Swellendam history and references South African iconic images and items. The bed is crowned by a cupola inspired by the Eastern style of the local church, while the reading room in the suite teams Afrikaner quilts and World Cup makarapas, which are pure township art. Wander past the pool, over seasonal streams or by the kitchen herb garden to stumble upon the garden cottages. On first glance, the allure is obvious. Simple white structures, the bridal suites are reminiscent of the historic cottages of this region, with reed ceilings, shuttered windows, bucolic views and indigenous or water-wise planting that welcome you. As you step inside the suites, you discover even more country romance in the stylishly appointed interiors, which mixes the eclectic African, South African and European heritage. In reflecting the architecture, each of the suites features subtle and unique decor. The finishes are chosen for comfort and have a lived-in feel. Vintage pieces and antiques have been selected with care, adding to the homegrown spirit that pervades. Unique African art punctuates throughout. Crisp yet plush bedding comforts you through the night while the bespoke lamps provide a source of warm and cosy lighting. While the cottages are meant to tell the old stories of Swellendam each also has its luxurious touch. Every suite has its own lounge, large bedrooms with similarly large en-suite bathrooms living areas and private gardens. Almost all of them have their own fireplaces. Afternoon tea is sometimes available in season, and is served by the team at 'Augusta's African Kitchen', with its focus on pan-African cuisine. Some of the dishes are Afrikaner while others are Cape Malay. Says Henk, 'Our kitchen is not professional. Nor do we open our doors to the public. Unless they beg. We cook because we love the flavours of Africa. It is the food we know and grew up with. We love the fact that Milktart can be made in a different way depending if you are Afrikaans or Muslim. So whether you like koeksisters or koesisters, we want you to be satisfied.' The team specialises in sourcing the best they can find in the area and it is all too easy to say yes to every morsel. I saw a petite young Belgian woman work her way through four koeksisters and assistant Melanie laughs as she tells me about the German group of nine, who interrupted the flow of dinner and demanded a second serving of Biltong Soup after which they gave rapturous applause. It is this focus on quality that had Henk and Michel develop a small range of wine with Andrew Barns of Mischa Estate. 'The wine is something that we take great pride in. Drinking a wine of quality is a responsibility we take seriously. We chose to make a signature wine with someone who loves making wine, and who does not do it as a business venture but as a vocation,' Michel says. 'The wines we made are artisanal and of the highest quality. We know Andrew and Rachel very well and we are very proud to serve this small range'. ... more   less
