we spent 2 nights in the honeymoon suite (although not being on honeymoon) which is just great, very spacious with a huge comfortable bed, nice bathroom and a lovely own terrace (look at the stars). very friendly hosts. there a nice little restaurant belonging to the hotel having a slight asian touch.

Have stayed at the rosje 4 times in the last 8 years and it used to be a highlight of my trips, I always looked forward to the lovely little cottages and the friendly service...NOW has changed owner!!the hectic and seemingly confused dutch man who runs this place did not even welcome us at check in, merely told us to go to the room after handing us the keys...the whole place had a strange atmosphere, all the staff seemed nervous and intimidated. The cute little pool had no sunchairs or towels, upon asking the dutchman for one he looked at me astonished as if i was asking him to solve quantum physics...then they brought a squeaky plastic chair no one could sit on...THEN came the best part: we visited the restaurant which used to be excellent (their hand made parmesan herb croquettes with filet was to die for!), waited 1 hour for the starter which was not edible( randang curry fatty and full of bones, salad tasted of absolutely nothing), then upon waiting another hour for the main (which wasnt all that bad) all hell broke loose in the kitchen and the dutchman screams at his staff at the top of his lungs repeatedly...the entire restaurant (full, kitchen right behind the main dining room so all could be heard!) was quiet for the next half hour until we left, some just got up and left! Have NEVER had such an experience!!! Worst atmosphere ever except for the giggles we had afterwards with the other guests about the idiocy of such a b and b owner who clearly has no idea how to treat either his staff or guests...will NEVER come back here which is a shame as i love the setting and the rooms along with the memories of a better roosje van de kap!!! Avoid it!

This story is full with lies, for that reason it's hardly worth to react upon. It looks like the writer is purposely trying to destroy our reputation. He, an Italian Swiss by the name of Roberto Savignano even gives false booking details most likely for that reason. He is rude and almost discriminating talking about the Dutchman and portraying an image far from reality. All the criticism he mention is not true. I brought his girl friend and him to the room offered them a drink and explained how everything worked. He was disappointed about the room and wanted one of the other Garden cottages; their room was the only one left that day and he booked it the same day at 12 noon. His girlfriend however liked the room. The pool has towels, he came to ask for cushions for the pool chairs (something only one other person in the last three years has been asking for), the squeaky chairs he is speaking about are metal chairs with woven plastic seats that cost around R1000. The restaurant was very busy last Saturday, everybody came in at the same time, the last people (he was the second last) coming in had to wait for their food quite some time but not the times he mention. Some things went terribly wrong at the service side of the restaurant and voices were raised. I am not only the manager of this place but the chef cook as well. However mainly because of this person's difficult order (he basically didn't follow the menu at all) he was the one who had to wait the longest time. Throughout, from the beginning he came in, he was behaving rude, complaining almost every hour, everybody working that day who had to deal with him became nervous, including me. He was acting like someone demanding 5 star service and accommodation but only willing to pay average prices. He purposely writes about employees being nervous to make his attack later to 'proof' that employees don't like to work here. Again I say, just as in previous comments, our employees love to work for us.
When we took over this place we had lots of problems, related to the transaction of this property, with the previous female owner, problems created by her. The place was run down. The last three years we invested so much in this property and upgraded everything and of course because of that the atmosphere of the place changed, actually the atmosphere majored. Some old guests clearly don't like that, apart from not liking something, it looks like people such as Roberto Savignano want, for some strange reason we don’t understand, revenge themselves on a forum like this.

This is a beautiful spot of which you can explore the area. The staff is very friendly and well educated, they will do everything to make you feel at home.
There is only one big problem in this beautiful place and thats the owner himself!
He is very unpolite. He screams to his staff and his wife and is turning his own business into a dictoriat. In our opinion he's having to much stress. The food was good but because of his behavior we decided not to have dinner here again.

Thank you for your review; sorry to have witnessed stress related to quite a lot of business problems in that period with a link to a private matter. Despite that, thank you for still enjoying our place and especially our staff; they are selected trained and educated by the owner and are pleasant people indeed.

We stopped off in Swellendam and booked the honeymoon suite which is above the owners' home with a private balcony. It is the typical attic room with dormer windows and a window in the roof in the bathroom. The room is huge and the king-size four poster was very comfortable. The breakfast was delicious too. The town is lovely for walking and we saw many people out about the town. We walked round the well-kept garden and all the garden rooms look lovely too. I would stay there again. The only down-side I can see is that there are no televisions in the rooms, but this is a good excuse to read and enjoy the magnificent mountain backdrop.

I would give 5 stars for everything. Especially the food. Although there are not many choices in the menu, we ordered 4 main dishes (almost everything in the menu) and it all turned out to be excellent. The beef, the lamb, the ostrich, everything dishes are perfect. My best dishes in South Africa.
The owners and the staffs are very friendly and helpful. I felt that we were treated as very special guests. I could not find a better way to thank-you Mr.Roosje for his kindness.
We spent 2 nights in Swellendam with Roosje Van Da Kaap and we were completely satisfied.

Room Tip: The 2 rooms with garden view. And the room on the opposite side called Professor.

Firstly, great, great value for money. In an expensive town like Swellendam, it was so nice to find accommodation that was both affordable and comfortable as well as being very close to the historic centre of the town. Although the room was quite small, it was more than adequate. One of the cleanest rooms I've stayed in, it was very tastefully furnished and the owners had thought of everything - including beautiful linen! The gardens are sumptuous and the setting is quiet - one is hardly aware that the town centre is so close by. Breakfast was good and the only negative I have is that the dining room was very cold - a fire in the fireplace would have been great! The owners were extremely attentive, offering us coffee, wine, extra heaters, etc. The location is also great because of all the historic buildings in the area, set amongst tree lined streets - makes for beautiful walks. All in all, highly recommended!

Thank you very much for your kind words, no need to add anything, except sorry for the fire, normally in the winter time we have fires.

Tourists seem to spend only one night in Swellendam; we were no different, our Friday was our penultimate stop before relinquishing our hire car at Cape Town airport. Swellendam was busy, because the following day (November 26) a crucial annual bicycle road race began.

At Roosje van de Kaap, we were delighted to secure the Honeymoon suite, which has a lovely view of the mountains from its elevated terrace. The hotel was easy to find. We made use of the hotel’s limited but awkward gated parking, but street parking looked widely available and safe.

Our room was spacious, bright and clean, and the bed sumptuous and vast. The en suite is equally appealing. The room itself is odd: entering it appears normal, but the further you go in the more difficult it is to find a sure perspective or - indeed - any right angle. We also thought that the door to the room was insecure.

Our host, who we assume was Freerk, proved an engaging individual. We had a wonderful half hour while he engaged the cyclists in the garden below in a stream of invective. My understanding, from our subsequent conversation, is that the dispute arose because the racers had tried to sneak extra team members into the garden rooms. Freerk also said that we needed to book early for the good value on-site restaurant, when in fact only one other table was occupied. Breakfast was great, and service throughout excellent.

All of the sights of historic Swellendam are within easy walking distance. The curators of the local museums and exhibits were informative and helpful, and the admission charges reasonable. As for Roosje van de Kaap, both it and its owner are quirky and charming, and I would thoroughly recommend it as a pleasant and relaxing stopover.

Room Tip: Very happy with privacy of the secluded honeymoon suite.
