“Delightful park close to Swellendam”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 29, 2012

This was our first trip to Bontebok and, although relatively small, it met our expectations for scenery and viewings of the beautiful herds of bontebok that reside there. The camp is on the banks of the Brede River where you can swim. The facilities are adequate for self catering but you need to take all your own supplies as the shop only sells basics such as braii wood and soft drinks.

A drive round the park doesn't take long but the views of the mountains are a great backdrop to the Brede River scenery. One night is sufficient in the park although the standard chalets are the best we've come across in Sanparks camps.

“Good if you approach with right expectations - this is beautiful peaceful nature not a luxury big 5 experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 15, 2012

Some of the other reviews which were disappointed in this park were fairly accurate but suggest the reviewers were looking for something this park does not offer. This is not a place to see much big game, even though the rare Bontebok are an almost guaranteed sighting. Neither is it worth driving around much, the bush itself is unexciting and the stunningly beautiful mountains in the distance can be seen as well from the camp. What it does offer is a place for hiking and mountain biking in peaceful nature, as well as a river you can swim and canoe in (bring your own canoe !). We stayed in the huts which are typical basic SANParks in terms of fittings but in this case beautifully designed to experience the natural environment - large decks carefully designed to maximise views of nature and avoid overlooking neighbours. Very good built in braai (barbeque), nice table on deck and surrounding small wildlife (abundant birds attracted by the nearby river, leopard tortoises on the camp lawns) make this a relaxing place to hang out if you enjoy peaceful nature and the views. The river is not as safe a swimming location as a pool, but good swimmers will enjoy it. We stayed one night but a two night stay probably ideal.

“If you wants to see Game, this is not the place to go.”

We have been to numerous game parks in SA. This is the first one we have been truly disappointed in. After more than an hours drive we had only seen 6 bontebok and 2 tortoises.

“Small but worthwhile”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 22, 2012

This relatively small park on the banks of the Breede river doesn't boast the big five but is well worth the visit. There are self -catering chalets in the park or stay in a B&B in nearby Swellendam.
Famous for the protection of the rare Bontebok you will also see other antelope and Zebra. Some great bird spotting along the banks of the river.

“Place of charm and interest.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 22, 2012

OK it does not have the big five, and is not particularly large, but this place is a little gem particularly if you want to stretch your legs for an hour or so. We saw bustards, buzzards, several types of antelope, and 2 tortoises. Lots of other types of bird made for an interesting 4 hours.
The shop sells drinks but no food.
