Visited Powell House on the 26th of Oct. Originally the plan was to have dinner at Fraai Ulitz 1798 however the R60 was closed hence decided to head to Powell in mist of the great reviews it had.
We had ordered an array of food as follows,
1) Warthog Carpacccio
2) Prawn Salad
3) Cape Malay lamb and Chicken Curry
4) Lamb Cutlet
The warthog carpaccio was alright, I reckon the combination of brie/camembert cheese do not go well with each other as the meat itself is already salty. Perhaps a nice chutney would have been better.
Prawn Salad. The prawns look really big and fresh however the salad sauce was something that required imagination to make it taste nice. Its a salad thats ordinary and definitely do-able in a normal household
Cape Malay Lamb and Chicken Curry. The absolute worst chicken curry that I've had in my life. Bland and tasteless, in a sauce that is too watered down. The lamb curry was average, but the chunks of lamb were too tough and chewy. The rice that came with it was also too wet for my liking. The only saving grace was the papadum (Indian cracker), which tasted proper.
Lamb Cutlet. I believe there's a difference between Medium and well done. Ordered medium but received well done. Hence it became both chewy and gamey. The potato mash was tasteless . Portion was alright though.
Kinglip. The fish was introduced as impecable and definitely was a good choice. Pan fried and not oily was what was described. However what came out was a really flesh piece of kinglip which was not seasoned , a pool of oil sitting underneath the fish and chips that were in retrospect soft, undercooked and under seasoned.
Will Powell house be a place that I would visit if I was in the area? No.
Will Powell house be a place that I will visit if i was staying in swellendam ? No.
Is home cooking nicer and cheaper than eating at Powell House? Yes.
I reckon the one awesome thing about the place is really Alan. Alan's a really awesome guy, friendly , funny and very true to himself. Perhaps we went on a day where the chef might be slightly under the weather. I do not deny that we went in a pretty big group of 9 but that also doesnt mean that the standard of food should drop that badly . For that matter, it should only improve. Maybe this review will be alittle too harsh but this is our truthful review . Hopefully the constructive comments for the individual dishes will be good.
