What a lovely evening was had by all. The restaurant was full with not a seat open, and was buzzy, vibrant and extremely cozy with the log fire burning in the dining room on a stormy, cold Swellendam evening. Our host Hannes (the owner) was fantastic, giving us and all the other guests his personal attention and making everyone feel welcome and special. To mention a few of the meals that I would highly recommend you try when you visit them: Starters: Snails in a creamy sauce with delicious homemade bread or the deep fried mozzarella balls. Mains to try are the chicken schnitzel, pork fillet, sushi (only place in town that serves it) or the yummy chicken curry. To top it all I received a fabulous birthday shooter surprise - Please don't miss this restaurant if you are in Swellendam, you will not be disappointed.

This was the only restaurant open the night we stayed over in Swellendam. We will definitely not be back. The decor is terrible, trying to hard with plastic flowers and tacky linen. Poor wine list with prices either at one extreme or the other. Nice selection on the menu but the chef cannot execute. Had a curried butternut soup that tasted as though an entire box of curry powder was emptied into it and for R45 and it only being little less than a cup in quantity, it was not worth it. Then had a rump steak that had about a 3cm chunk of fat along the side, cooked to order but no seasoning/basting to speak of accompanied by overcooked (boiled) and unimaginative vegetables. We gave the restaurant a chance and ordered dessert (R50 each, quite pricey). The creme brulee was out of a packet and the white chocolate tart had not set and had a grainy consistency. Wait staff were trying to hard and did not know the menu. Eventually sat outside to feel more comfortable but were accosted with smoke from the outside fire. All in all, terrible food at ridiculous prices for the quality. Rather go somewhere else

Apparently under new management we were urged to give the place a try as most other restaurants in town were closed. Menu sounds interesting if suspiciously long. We kicked off with a disappointing salad followed by a dreadful vegetarian dish. Steak seemed to be the only fresh meat or fish on the menu and that was good, but drowned in a sauce. No veggies in sight. Presentation was all round peculiar. The place was freezing and customers kept their coats and scarves on.

It is immediately clear that the restaurant was either new or under new management, something which was confirmed later. De Vagebond might be in the early stages of something amazing. The biltong and blue cheese soup was spectacular, not too creamy. The smoky bacon salad made an impression because care had been taken to prepare the bacon in a maple syrup. Though the waiters seemed a bit new at the job, the service was still very good.
