“A good choice”
Reviewed February 9, 2014

We have dined here on previous visits to Swellendam. As it was a Sunday evening the choice of restaurants open was limited but we were very happy to return here. The hake was excellent and chicken cordon bleu very good. It was a hot evening so inside dining was a little warm. But having spoken to others eating al fresco who thought the seats rather uncomfortable and a little smokey from a braai, we probably got the better deal. Th eservice was very good and paricularly friendly.

Place looks really good olde worlde we booked in for a table of 10 around a year before going we were all sat together at a large rectangular table !!!! then it all went wrong, it took ages to even order our drinks and even longer to get them. We finally managed to order food the Guy (Klinger) who organised the trip booked here for his birthday celebration, he ordered game pie which he had eaten in another restaurant a couple of days before, it came out and it was just a mush of shredded meat (it kind of looked like lasagne) i ordered a nice big steak (blue) and it was superb 4 people ordered lamb stew it came out in a tiny little bowl and the bowl was full of bone there was almost no meat at all and what there was was just shredded bits we complained to the waiter and the owner graciously sent out three more bowls of bone !!!! we complained again and he said he was sorry that we didnt like the way south africans had there stew we pointed out that some of us had eaten lamb stew earlier on in the week and that surprisingly there had actually beem lamb in the stew as well as bones. By this time he just kept repeating the same old rubbish over and over. At this point we had had enough and told him that even though it said on the menu that parties of 6 or more would incur a service charge of 10% we would not be paying it. His last words were please dont come back again !!!! BARRED !!!! we payed the bill without the 10% and gave the waiter & waitress a good tip directly to them. I advise everybody to stay well clear there are so many fantastic restaurants all over South Africa you do not need to put up with crap like this. 2jags

“Go there for the pizza and nachos”
Reviewed December 21, 2013 via mobile

Best pizza in town. Bacon and feta supreme is really tasty and has been on many occasions. Consistency is great. Nacho's also very tasty. Our go-to-and-unwind restaurant in Swellendam. Service friendly and efficient. Good value for money. Well done guys!

“Great steaks!”
Reviewed December 15, 2013 via mobile

We had chilli poppers with the most delicious blue cheese sauce to start. Very good but a very light coating not a crumb.

Our steaks were very generous and well cooked. Veg was a bit "pap" but overall a great main. The man size rump is HUGE.
Wine well priced and good selection.
Espresso machine out of order so only filter coffee that night.

Atmosphere and service good. Nice little fire outside. Thoroughly enjoyed
Our dinner!

“bad experience for a party of 10”
Reviewed December 3, 2013

We were encouraged to book at Vagabonds by the generally good reviews on Tripadvisor, however our experience was not good at all. Ok we had a nice table to seat 10, the menu was good but, we arrived at 7,30. By 8.00 we atill didn't all ahve a drink. I even heard them say thatthey were seaching for some wine glasses! it toll ages to get our drinks, then ages tro take our order, then ages to serve our meals. Speaking to others at the place where we staying it seems that Vagabonds are ok for small groups of 2 or 3, but in my opinion they just couldn;t cope with a group of 10. Now some who had the stew complained that there were plenty of bones but no meat. Vagabonds response was just to bring out more of the same - all bones and no meat, and heated so as to be in danger of burning your palate. The owner was addressed, about our issues. He sais 'sorry' but otherwise did nothing other than shrug his shoulders, and request that we didn't come back again. We were on a two week tour out Western/Easter cape and Vagabonds was definitely the worst place we ate at. And they didn't really seem to care less. Wahatever their internal problems, the customer says thay Vagabonds sucks. Unless your a very small group then avoid.
