Amazing hosts Elzebet and Wessel Beyers. Relaxing and great value for money. Wine selection of note...ask Wessel to select to suit your palate and wallet. Add to your travel route, stay over in Swellendam Friday/Saturday to experience good hospitality, music and conversation to remember for life.

“Enjoyable and honest.”

De vagebond is one of those restaurants which i can describe as relaxing and honest.
Not for the stifflip or snob, but a very relaxing and enjoyable restaurant.
The owner is very involved and love local cuisine on his menu. I think the athmosphere is one of the best in Swellendam with good service. Prices are value for money. Wil do it again!

“Over rated”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 6, 2013

I have eaten there many times as friends insist on choosing De Vagebond as the place to hang out in Swellendam.
Nice atmosphere with lots of locals but that is where the positives end.

It is an expensive menu and yet nothing to write home about.
I love crumbed mushrooms and when i ordered it i literally received a bowl with 8 mushrooms and for a price that makes those the most expensive mushrooms I have ever eaten.

They are known for their steaks but I have had better in Swellendam and the veggies you receive definitely come from a frozen packet.

The service is decent and as mentioned the atmosphere is good but the quality of the food does not support the prices.

“quite expensive and not worthy of it”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 25, 2013

i am vegetarian. there were a few vegetarian options on the menu so i cant fault them on that but i did not order them. i chose the vegetable soup and a sandwich. my dining partner ordered chicken curry. the first thing to arrive was a place of breaded mushrooms which neither of us had ordered. when my sandwich arrived it was made with very cheap sliced bread and grated yellow cheese. my soup then arrived which had a tiny slice of much nicer bread with it so i don't know why the sandwich couldn't have been made with this? R45 for a sandwich with a few chips is very expensive by SA standards i felt and certainly wasn't worth the expense. my friend had chicken curry which he said was nice if not really warm enough. it was just chicken in curry sauce with sides though and not really what you would expect if you ordered a curry.
when the waitress came to take payment she asked if we wanted to pay the tip on the card or in cash. i resent the assumption that a tip is always going to be paid and felt it was quite rude how she put it.

“Absolutely Fabulous”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 22, 2013

Once invited by a hearty fire burning outside, one experiences the friendly and welcoming owners who even sat down and chatted with us for a bit (without invading our space). The service was excellent and the waiters are friendly, fast and well versed with their diverse menu and the Swellendam area. A definite must if you are looking for excellent food, which include a variety from beautifully prepared fish, poultry, meat and even traditional South African dishes such as bobotie, game pie and the best malva pudding ever (especially when served with Amarula liquer) in a joyous, welcoming and laid back atmosphere.
