Without booking in advance we arrived in a warm place and were giving a beautiful en suite room with view into a wild and beautiful garden next to the mountains.
The owner invited us for dinner (free of charge!!) and made us feel like a king as there were not many other guests.
So go to Swellendam Backpackers- relax by one of the fire places inside- go for a horseride up the mountains and enjoy the peace of the village!

This place should not be advertised as having a kitchen - no hot water, toaster or microwave and only one burner on cooker that worked. Old and dirty kitcen utensils and grubby work surfaces. Eat out or have a barbeque on the camp fire if you stay here. En suite room ok but bathroom not very clean and therefore overpriced. However the surroundings are pretty with a nice large garden. Owner is friendly and cooks in the evening. Its a pity because with a bit of T.L.C. this place could be really nice.

We stayed for 2 nights in a double en suite room. The room was dirty and the furniture very old. The bed was OK though.
We like to self cater, but one look at the self catering kitchen, which was terrible, we decided to eat and drink at the local Cafe Matessons (highly recommended). There was no free coffee and tea making facilities which is offered at most other backpackers in South Africa.
The only good points were the flat screen TV and the evening camp-fire.

Very friendly welcome when we arrived on the Baz Bus.
Lovely double room with ensuite.
Beautiful gardens and setting.
Reasonable internet prices - two computers available.
Delicious home cooked meals available - highly recommended. Bar.
Camp Kitchen area is really basic and not really very clean or well lit (only negative really - it could be much improved).
We went on a horseback ride...beautiful path but the guide barely talked to us and told us nothing about the area or any advice on how to ride the horses (we were both nearly beginners really).
Town is great and the hikes are amazing.

It's a nice place to stay. Comfortable & clean double rooms, very friendly service – try the dinner that they will provide – it’s worth all the money.
In the evening they made a small fire in the garden to sit there, make your own BBQ and have a beer.

We liked our stay, got a lot of extra information what to do and where to go. We recommend it for a stay on the way to/from the GardenRoute-Cape Town.

Arrived-found super shady parking in a quiet street with amazing views of the mountain. Obviously a very busy and self sufficient venue-the team were out back in huge garden tending the veges and getting a braai fire ready-so rang the bell at reception. A super guy from Zim checked me in-really multicultural staff and soooooooooooo helpful. They made sure I had my bookings for dinner and breakfast-the chef made a yummy local dish called "bobotie"-very tasty and filled the gap nicely and obviously pudding. High street is about ten minutes away with some really cute little cottages en route.Sat around the fire chatting with other guests drinking some local wine-very social' Had an awesome nights sleep in the cabin-couldnt believe how quiet it was. DONT forget your Tabbard -this is Africa and there are mosqiutos.SUPER hot shower first thing then breakfast was out on the deck in early morning sun.
I was pleasantly surprised at the prices so bottome line is-go stay at Swellendam Backpackers-there is loads to do-hiking,horse riding, swimming in the waterfalls or just chilling in their amazing garden. GO SEE!!!!!!!!! uitsa

There was no-one around when we arrived, so we had to go away and come back later! Despite the Lonely Planet saying they do good dinners, they weren't cooking when we stayed as we were the only ones there. Breakfast was overpriced and the person working wouldn't let me make a local call despite offering to pay - I had to go into town which is a 10-15 minute walk. Room was okay but quite cold - they did provide extra blankets though. Lots of mosquitoes in the room.

Swellendam Backpackers is a wonderful place to stay whether you are a single traveler, a family with big or small kids or even a more vintage traveler. Ideal for a romantic weekend escape. I am so sorry for our guest that did not catch us working hard in the office close to the front desk, but we need to relax and chill by the river or work in our organic veggie garden as well to make those yummy dishes. also so sorry that my feet were finished after a hard weeks work and did not make food for them. I am sure my fellow colleagues in town assured that they had a good meal and went to bed with full tummies. As we have a huge garden and do not pray any pesticides or insecticides we rely on the multi legged ones to eat away at th bad ones. eg, big spiders are good and eat mosquitoes, and we are happy to remove them as part of our duty. Never leave your inside light on when you go out at night this brings mozzies into your room and hence a problem for the night to follow. hope this brings good vibes to all our happy guests that have stayed and a welcome to everyone else that arrives at the front desk. I am in the garden, come in go through the dining room and call my name and I will come. or ring the little bell at the desk. Someone will hear you as the garden is BIG. Book for dinner as soon as you check in to prevent disappointment. xx Steph
