We ate at La Sosta last year and were very keen to try it again this time - so much so, we booked for both nights we were in Swellendam. The restaurant gets well deserved rave reviews from the vast majority of TA subscribers and this is, I'm afraid, another! There are however a few reviews from detractors, most of whom did not like the style of food, prices or portion sizes.
One problem with "Italian" restaurants is the range of food styles the description covers, which can colour one's perception of what might be on offer. This is not a pasta joint, nor does it serve the ubiquitous pizza, and if that is what you seek, don't go! Nor does La Sosta serve large portions - it does however offer the classic 4 courses - starter, first plate (including some pasta options), main course and dessert. It is, some might argue, a genuine Italian restaurant.
The food on offer is superb and very, very Italian. Portions are adequate, rather than giant and the presentation is exquisite. The restaurant has about 16 covers, which the owner and one waitron serve. The pace is leisurely, I assume because each dish is cooked and assembled from scratch, by the chef, and spouse of the owner. Again, if you want fast food, don't go is my advice.
As to price - middle of the road by good restaurant standards in SA. I'm sure there is cheaper food to be had around, but for quality and style, this place is very, very good. A big bowel of pasta (try Giovanni's in Somerset West) is great if that's what you want - I certainly do sometimes. This is the "other sort" of Italian, where the food and style exude quality and passion.
