We ate at La Sosta last year and were very keen to try it again this time - so much so, we booked for both nights we were in Swellendam. The restaurant gets well deserved rave reviews from the vast majority of TA subscribers and this is, I'm afraid, another! There are however a few reviews from detractors, most of whom did not like the style of food, prices or portion sizes.

One problem with "Italian" restaurants is the range of food styles the description covers, which can colour one's perception of what might be on offer. This is not a pasta joint, nor does it serve the ubiquitous pizza, and if that is what you seek, don't go! Nor does La Sosta serve large portions - it does however offer the classic 4 courses - starter, first plate (including some pasta options), main course and dessert. It is, some might argue, a genuine Italian restaurant.

The food on offer is superb and very, very Italian. Portions are adequate, rather than giant and the presentation is exquisite. The restaurant has about 16 covers, which the owner and one waitron serve. The pace is leisurely, I assume because each dish is cooked and assembled from scratch, by the chef, and spouse of the owner. Again, if you want fast food, don't go is my advice.

As to price - middle of the road by good restaurant standards in SA. I'm sure there is cheaper food to be had around, but for quality and style, this place is very, very good. A big bowel of pasta (try Giovanni's in Somerset West) is great if that's what you want - I certainly do sometimes. This is the "other sort" of Italian, where the food and style exude quality and passion.

The Italian waiter is also the owner, together with his wife who thinks up and cooks the excellent meals herself. We've tried a few restaurants in Swellendam and this was definitely the best!

“Simply divine”
Reviewed February 9, 2014

La Sosta was recommended to us by the staff at Schoone Ooordt, the beautiful Cape Dutch residence where we stayed in Swellendam (approx. 5 mins' drive from La Sosta). There are only 8 tables at this tiny Italian restaurant, so book ahead as it's popular. On arrival, we were greeted with a huge welcoming smile by the owner. We both opted for the 4-course menu and the 8 dishes we sampled between us were all mouthwatering and presented beautifully. This is home cooked Italian cooking at its best. Every dish seemed like it had been lovingly prepared and presented. When the bill arrived, we were stunned at the value for money. I know the GBP/ZAR exchange rate is very good at the moment, but nevertheless, the price we paid for food was much less than what we expected for food and service of this standard. No need to get dressed up either. It's. Very relaxed and informal dining room with simple furnishings and nothing flash. Highly recommended.

“What a gem”
Reviewed February 5, 2014

We had a wonderful meal here. It's only a small place with a few tables - we chatted with the owner - he said that he and his wife had arrived from Milan 7 years ago having never run a restaurant before - but they are making a fabulous job of it.

They value quality over quantity so they don't have a lot of tables and the food is sublime. Highly recommended.
