we could not visit Old Gaol last time we visited Swellendam and were really looking forward to eating it during our second trip.but it was a bad decision! we walked in at around 3 pm with hardly any tables full (so the service was not terribly busy) and walked past the owner of the property who was busy in a conversation with another guest. we stood for 10 minutes (ignored by the owner and pretty much all other servers) when a guy came and showed us the table. we placed our order (from an over priced menu) and were told after 10 minutes that the options we had chosen were sold out. at this point in time another server approached our table and asked if everything was alright. we told her that we were trying to figure out what "waterblommetjie" dish on their "specials" menu meant. she just shrugged her shoulders and said i have no idea, this is the 1st time she has seen it on the menu and anyways it is sold out! our original server than went in to see if anything else was available in the vegetarian option and came back with the feedback that the "waterblommetjie" dish was very much available and could be ordered, but he had no idea what that dish was made of. All this while the owner who was still chatting up at the next table and could hear what was going on at our table didnt bother and continued to pretend nothing is wrong! we were so unimpressed with the service and the place that we decided to walk away! if i was the business owner of this place and saw my customers who pay for the food eaten there walk away, i would do everything to check what went wrong and how could it be corrected. totally avoid! i would rather go to la belle alliance which has a beautiful setting where you can sit by the river under trees, great menu, super service and gracious hosts!
