Owner description: Vergelegen - no ordinary Estate. Founded on 1 February 1700, Vergelegen (meaning "situated far away"), has been under the ownership of some of the world's great explorers and visionaries, each of whom, in their own way, have helped shape Vergelegen to what it is today: a world-class Estate. With its world renowned handcrafted wines, history spanning over 300 years, heritage, exquisite gardens and refined cuisine, it comes as no surprise that Vergelegen continues to be the choice of the discerning visitor seeking a total sensory experience. For this reason, the Estate has borne witness to many visits of heads of state and celebrities from all over the world. Think of Vergelegen to spend quality time on your own, with your family and friends or business associates - wine tasting centre and cellar tours, Camphors at Vergelegen Signature Restaurant, Stables at Vergelegen Bistro Restaurant and the Picnic, are only a few of a myriad of enjoyable activities at Vergelegen. We invite you to experience the world of Vergelegen first-hand.

The octagonal garden always gives me a sense of history as does the house, and large garden. The renovations have made dining here a lovely experience too.

1. The Museum is interesting.
2. The gardens are in a class of their own- most probably the best in Southeren Africa.
3. The house, beautifully maintained and presents.
4. The choice of restuarants.
The list can go on, but I leave something for others to write about!

Having enjoyed in the UK the Chardonnays Vergelegen produces in South Africa I was curious to go there and enjoy some wine and walk a bit. What I was not expecting was the beautiful gardens and scenery. The wine tasting was reasonable, not fantastic. My favorite Chardonnay was there and continues to be the best of the lot.
We had lunch in the Garden, food was not excellent but tasted well and the presentation was Ok. Perhaps we did not pay too much attention to the food because there were roses of every kind making the garden colorful and very beautiful. We enjoyed conversation with a Scott living in South Africa who made the afternoon even more enjoyable.
We walked a lot and the afternoon bought plenty of discoveries, beautiful places in prime state of conservation, a small museum and the history of the place. It was really a great way to end our South African trip in April 2012.
