Description: The Camphors at Vergelegen signature restaurant takes its name from the ancient giant camphor trees, planted in 1700, situated in front of the historic Homestead. The restaurant overlooks expansive lawns and beautiful trees complementing the overall dining experience and creating an ambiance never to be forgotten. After only a year of operation, Camphors was awarded eighth place in the Top Ten restaurants in South Africa, in The Eat Out DStv Food Network Restaurant Awards 2014, as well as being the Regional Winner - Wine Tourism Restaurant - in the 2014 Best of Wine Tourism Awards, Great Wine Capitals. Vergelegen produces classical wine varietals and the ever changing menu reflects a modern take on classical international and local food dishes, specifically designed to complement Vergelegen's award-winning wines. The Sommelier and his restaurant team guide diners through the menu and recommended wine selections to ensure a relaxed and memorable food and wine experience. This experience is tailored for both wine and food connoisseurs and everyday visitors alike who want to enjoy an unpressured dining experience. Regrettably, Camphors is not child-friendly.

“Amazing picnic!”

We loved the vegetarian picnic at Vergelegen. The estate is beautiful, the picnic location was gorgeous and the food was delicious! A must-do on any trip to wine country.

“2nd try and wow!”
Reviewed March 22, 2014

After a very underwhelming experience a year ago, we decided to go back to this acclaimed restaurant and chef!
First of all, our receptionist made the reservation at the wrong restaurant on the property (Stables instead of Camphors) but the staff were amazing about it and gave us a table without us having to "cry" too much. Our waiter - a Zimbabwean tall gentleman - was amazing all along.
The food was really amazing, I had the Tete de porc and the rabbit to finish with cheese, and absolutely loved every single bite of it. What impressed me the most was the simple amount of ingredients on the plate, very refreshing for the past food fashion in the country that was really too much.
My husband had the mozzarella, duck and stone fruit, but had to exchange his main with our son because there was a little bit too much beetroot in starter and main again, it was just as well as both were happy to change, our son had the pasta starter and the hake to finish with a chocolate.
The wine list is limited to the property's wines which is a little sad, however forces you to drink wines you would probably not chose in the first place and we were happily surprised.
Will come back for sure and recommend more!

“Good, but not the best in the area”
Reviewed March 11, 2014

We visited Camphors on a lovely Saturday and were seated outdoors overlooking the magnificent gardens. I assume that on a cooler day or evening, the indoor seating will be as comfortable, enjoying the rich, taseful decor.
The service was good, but our waiter was not 100% familiar with the food and menu and had to constantly refer to a note book, mispronouncing several items, ........ rather awkward for our foreign guests! I almost felt that too many staff were either 'in training' or required more attention to detail.
The food was pleasant with interesting combinations of ingredients, but we feel that it was a 'bit contrived' with too many dots, smears and foams! The plates looked interesting but nothing was a 'hero' on the plate. Flavours and textures were good, but did not wow. We enjoy modern fine dining, but this just did not do it for us.
We enjoyed most of the dishes but none left us with 'I've got to come back for another one of these!'
The wine selection was good and wines were professionally served.
The area is desperate for upmarket / fining dining with a slight 'Bistro' edge rather than another mediocre attempt at Picasso on a plate!

“Fine dinning in a real South-African environment”
Reviewed March 11, 2014

Since we've been dinning a lot around Somerset-West it's rather difficult to rank the experiences, because they were all so good and fine. Camphors is one of those occasions where you want to go to when you'd like to dinner at ease. Friendly service, the better food mixed with one of the better wines in the neighbourhood gives your holiday a sunny side.

“Oh dear I think”
Reviewed March 6, 2014

There is an avant garde thing in music, in modern art, in fine dining which challenges the consumer. The composer, artist, chef says forget the commonplace and appreciate my view. This can be wonderful, but a menu composed entirely of challenging dishes accompanied by cold vegetables and offhand service, oh dear. That said the pomegranate soufflé was exquisite.
I am conscious that I am judging this restaurant against the best in the world which is unfair because the overall experience is good value for money.
