Description: The Camphors at Vergelegen signature restaurant takes its name from the ancient giant camphor trees, planted in 1700, situated in front of the historic Homestead. The restaurant overlooks expansive lawns and beautiful trees complementing the overall dining experience and creating an ambiance never to be forgotten. After only a year of operation, Camphors was awarded eighth place in the Top Ten restaurants in South Africa, in The Eat Out DStv Food Network Restaurant Awards 2014, as well as being the Regional Winner - Wine Tourism Restaurant - in the 2014 Best of Wine Tourism Awards, Great Wine Capitals. Vergelegen produces classical wine varietals and the ever changing menu reflects a modern take on classical international and local food dishes, specifically designed to complement Vergelegen's award-winning wines. The Sommelier and his restaurant team guide diners through the menu and recommended wine selections to ensure a relaxed and memorable food and wine experience. This experience is tailored for both wine and food connoisseurs and everyday visitors alike who want to enjoy an unpressured dining experience. Regrettably, Camphors is not child-friendly.

Just had a small group of Americans here to enjoy the grounds and private lunch. Wonderful food and paired wine tasting presented by Christo manager of the restaurant and Sommelier. The price of admissions to the grounds alone well worth it. But to top it off with wonderful food and wine made the total experience extra special.

we were told that we would be taken to a "simple farmhouse" and hence was taken aback by the grand trees, gardens and buildings of this historical site. the restaurant welcomed us to a private dining room and i was astonished by how the maitre d' described our menu and the recommended wines - it was difficult to decide if we should pick the dish to go with the wine or go for the wine! everything was excellent and this made for one of the best and most memorable meeting related dinners i have been privileged to enjoy

A new restaurant in Somerset West - yeay! So we book and very much looknforward to going!
First irritation, a fee to be paid to enter the Estate... Does not matter if you have a reservation and are about to spend R3000 for lunch... Best is when we complained to the Manageress/hostess she told us we were paying for the upkeep of the properties' road... really?
Great service, friendly knowledgeable waiter, we never lacked ofnattention, the setting is also amazing to relax. A great view? No, but a great lawn!
Bread was great? Tasted as good as the bread at Oude Bakerei in Stellenbosch. Amuse/snack great looking and tasting although a little on the salty side for the tapioca cracker.
Starters- the marrow on the seared sirloin was not edible (and i love marrow) a new cooking method that did not work, loved the fresh corainder seeds, it made for the rest of the dish. My lamb ( asked rare) was raw, i could hardly cut through it, the sauce very acidic. The worst was the cheese, have you ever tried cold toasted cheese? Well no matter what the cheese quality, it tastes horrible. I told the waiter and was told he would informnthe kitchen... End of story.
The table had a few complaints too - undercooked duck breast (personnally i like it like it was), risotto very bitter.
I thought the duck confit very good and the desserts were appreciated.
Left very disappointed, but maybe my expectations were too high, will have to try in winter.

The staff were very friendly and knew exactly what they were talking about. The food was lovely and well prepared. Our company had the conference dinner at Camphors and overall enjoyed the vibe and atmosphere. Jemma was wonderful and even arranged that our group get the private room at no extra cost. WELL DONE!!!

My husband and I had the most amazing Valentines dinner at Camphors restaurant. We felt so special from the minute we walked in! We were welcomed by Jemma, who seated us outside for a glass of bubbly while we watched the sun set. When we were ready for our meal, they escorted us inside and the amazing meal began. Each course was absolute perfection! The textures, flavours, seasoning, presentation of every course was unbelievable and absolutely mind blowing! Thank you to all of the waiters, to Christo and to Jemma for an unforgettable night of food, wine and service, you spoilt us and we will definitely be back, hopefully for our one year anniversary!
