“Excellence at Helderberg Restaurant, Restaurant l'Auberge du Payson”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 27, 2013

This is the second visit for me to this sublime restaurant, a well kept secret by the locals for good reason! The menu is testimony of well-chosen South African/ Cape Malayan food. cooking. The tripe reminded me of my grandfather's brilliant cooking, only better and with beautifully blended spices. The oxtail was an example of meat well cooked, spicy, and with perfect natural glatine. The service is friendly, unobtrusive and professional. I would like to go back to try the smoorsnoek, bobotie, mutton curry and tripe (again!!!)

“One I'd like to keep for myself”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

Farmhouse atmosphere, quite small and tucked away. The menu is not big but has appetising items. Did not try the wines so no comment there but prices looked good. The food was excellent and as a hungry male I found the portions more than adequate.
The bread is to die for!! As a previous review says, the regulars order and take loaves home with them,
The service was also very good and prices down to earth.

“Cosy warm ambience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 4, 2012

This is the perfect venue for a cold rainy day (tho I should imagine it would be perfect out in the garden in summer) The ambience was so cosy and the fire place just added that farmhouse feel. My sister who has been to the restaurant many times suggested her favourites on the menu. Three of us opted for mutton curry, except my husband who chose venison pie. The curry was delicious, the mutton cooked to perfection. The vegetables would have suited any vegetarian - I just loved the pumpkin, cooked in the typical South African manner. My husband gave the venison pie a thumbs up and he is a fussy eater. For dessert we had apple crepes - this was sublime. Bread is made on premises - wholewheat or raisin and a small "freebie" salad was served to each person as a starter. The bread is so good that folks order loaves upon making reservations to take home with them. This was really an enjoyable luncheon and we will most definitely go back.
