I had a fantastic experience at this restaurant.
The food was divine and the service perfect (even with a full restaurant).
The wines where outstanding.
I did note the place is kid friendly, so I will go back with the family.
Thumbs up!

Our 5th visit here in 12 years and the experience never fails to be wonderful. The setting is stunning, service great and the picnic is very good indeed. Kid friendly and a warm welcome

Arrived at Stables without a reservation on a public holiday. Have to say I have never come across a hostess who was so determined to help us with a space somewhere. Well done. We couldnt have beeakfast since we were 5 minutes after cut off but had the sandwiches instead. They were great but for almost R70 i expected a little more. Great service lovely garden, will go again.

Visited Vergelegen Wine Estate and had a picnic offered by the Stables Restaurant in a lovely setting. The food was excellent with a fixed menu at a fixed price, however not including wines.Loved the picnic area under very old camphor trees and the food offering but the service was below standard, Wanted to enjoy the cheese desert with my wine but cheese, pannacotta and coffee were served at the same time, The salt we asked for twice never arrived to our table etc. Fortunately this was the only disappointment.

If you are looking for a stylish picnic in the winelands, then go to Vergelegen. They offer a picnic lunch under the camphor trees that is a gorgeous treat and very romantic. You must book, and if you are vegetarian then state this at the time of the booking. There is a R10 entry to the estate. The picnic service was fantastic, they even carry your picnic basket to your table under the trees and frequently but discreetly check that you have all that you need. Tables are very well spread out so you are not too aware of other diners. They do provide blankets for children, but this is really a grown-up affair.
Starters are really good smoked salmon rolls with capers, creamed cheese with truffle and houmous and french bread. Main course was cold roast beef, served medium rare (see photo) and fresh salami. Would have liked some horseradish with the beef but perhaps should have asked... There is also a wonderful coronation chicken with roasted almond flakes. Two salads: green bean and couscous accompany the meat main dishes. After that you will be full, but somehow, with the relaxation of the lovely surroundings and because they look so delicious you will find room somehow for the berry pannacotta dessert, served in little jars. The cheese is mediocre, but most SA cheese is and you are probably too full anyway. Tea and coffee served after your meal. Walk it off by visiting the beautiful gardens.
