“The kind of wine tasting that has made the Cape wine route famous...”
Reviewed December 21, 2012 via mobile

To start, let me say that we were there for the wine tasting, not the restaurant. The restaurant looked very good, and upmarket, and I would love to try it sometime. Avontuur is unusual in that not only does it offer an array of very palatable wines, but it also boasts 5 and 10 year old Brandies. Moreover, it has a commendable Cap Classique sparkling wine on offer. In its cellar are several wines with a list of awards.
We arrived at 4:45, sure that we would be turned away as closing was at 5. But no, our charming hostess Harriet Pretorius welcomed us warmly and proceeded to spoil us with a generous tasting of no less than 7 wines and Brandies. It is people like her that do this Estate proud and make the Cape wine route the popular attraction it has become. Well done, and thank you. We loved Avontuur and highly recommend it!

“Fab food”
Reviewed December 17, 2012

There are a lot of lovely restaurants attached to vineyards in this region, and I have tried a few but I have to say that Avontuur is really fantastic. The vineyard is also a stud farm and as you drive up to the restaurant you can see the most beautiful horses in the paddocks on each side of the driveway. There were a few foals too. The restaurant itself has a lovely terrace where you can enjoy your meal whilst watching the horses. We were unfortunate as it was cold and rainy the day we were there, but the restaurant was warm and welcoming with a roaring fire. The restaurant staff were really friendly and we loved the fact that we were given a mini wine tasting at our table. The food was absolutely fantastic- beautiful pate and mixed meat platter, terrific main courses, but the absolute star of the show was the chicken livers in thai curry sauce. I really have never tasted anything like it (I was sorry that I had actually ordered a main course as I would have been happy with another portion of this!) The most expensive wine (The Baccara) was only £15 and our whole meal including starters, mains dessert coffee cognac and wine was only £55!. Fantastic value.
I will definitely make it a priority to go back to Avontuur when I am next in the area.

“Best duck in the country!”
Reviewed December 10, 2012

Avontuur is situated between Somerset West and Stellenbosch overlooking the mountains in the distance and thoroughbread race horses in the fields below. The cuisine, especially the duck, is superb as is the wine from its own Estate. Excellent value for money.

“Great food and wine”
Reviewed December 4, 2012

I asked in a previous review if there was any end to the quality dining to be had in the stellenbosch area, apparently not. Avontuur closer to Somerset West than Stellenbosch was our latest find. A simple lunch kingklip with a herb crust for him and a perfectly cooked filet of beef with a mushroom sauce for her. Simple maybe but perfectly cooked food accompanied by the excellent estate wines. Do try the deep fried ice cream with an excellent butterscotch sauce you won't be disappointed.

“Location, food service!”
Reviewed November 28, 2012

The view over the vineyards certainly doesn't hurt while enjoying fresh, locally sourced, superb food! Their wines are brilliant, and the menu changes often. Service always friendly and spot on. Bookings are very good idea!
