We came here in early December and it had just been refurbished. The whole place was spotless and perfectly equipped. The carpets were plush, the bedding lovely, large four poster beds, the bathroom was huge with a large jacuzzi bath and a walk in shower and two sinks, we had a kitchen that was well stocked with crockery etc, all the essentials if you wanted to cook.
The garden led onto the lake and the view was fantastic, the gardens were beautifully maintained as was all the exterior furniture.
There was a guests area with a large tv, dining room table and chairs, a courtesy bar and full size snooker table.
The breakfast was wonderful and all the staff were friendly and helpful.
All in all a great stay. This hotel is a little out of the way but worth the effort.

You arrive to the most beautiful lawns, with massive trees overlooking a shiny lake. The kids go wild at all this space and water. We go wild at all this peaceful quiet beauty.
The lodge is well done, comfortably furnished and 10 minutes from Sedgefield.
Sedgefield was crazy busy over Christmas, and as soon as we had had enough it was easy to escape back to the tranquility of the lodge.
The lake was warm. Great for swimming and water sports. Very safe for the kids.
I would have to say that we have travelled extensively and found many beautiful places to stay, but the Lakeside Lodge is now at the top of our list.
We will definitely be back!

Lovely location overlooking lagoon Very peaceful Would recommend based on location and price but we were unhappy with our room

We booked a SC apartment with patio which inc separate bedroom for our 16 month old this room was being refurbished and we were instead given the only room yet to be refurbished at the lodge cot was squeezed into bedroom so we had to put cot into tiny kitchenette. There was no patio. Did query this. There was another sc apartment available with patio but we weren't offered this despite being the only guests on one night and the other sc apartment not used. With a young child we wanted him to be able to play outside the room where we could watch over him plus have his own bedroom so this was disappointing

We were lucky. Having booked early we still got our lodge stay at the old rates, as the new ones are out of this world: R1800 for an ordinary room, R2200 for a luxury one, we were told. The renovations to bathrooms simply don't warrant such a jump in price. And it's not clear who allocates 4 stars to a B&B where the bedroom is so small that there's no place for a suitcase, and where info brochures in the rooms get nicked and not replaced (each room has a bird name with a beautiful info map to match - maybe they're too beautiful to last?!).
The location of Lakeside is certainly true to its name: it really does lie on a quiet and scenic lake, and is indeed conveniently located off the N2 for outings into the surrounding countryside (Knysna, Oudshoorn, Wilderness, some passes and ocean shores). The grounds are nicely landscaped, and the flowers a great attraction for birds (there are also bird-feeders in trees). The swimming pool is tucked away and not intrusive, and a reference library (with TV) invites readers.
Sadly, friendly and helpful manager Jean went on leave after we arrived, and her replacement was not seen till the last evening when he offered us a sundowner cruise on the lake (for only the price of wine), maybe to make up for his absence?
I fear, even though the lodge's PR person believes differently, Lakeside is not competitive any longer. We certainly won't be back, but good luck to them.

Thank you for your comments - we're glad that you've enjoyed your visits overall as we understand you've stayed before.
It is a constant balancing act for hospitality services to meet all the needs of guests at a competitive price.
Regarding your disappointment at the increase in room rates, this is because of rising operational costs; also the demands of guests for improved facilities has meant that the Lodge had to make major investments in 2013.
We've noted fully your comments on the bathroom; the guest information in the room; and the absence of our Guest Manager -- we are completing the upgrades and your feedback is taken on board

Lakeside Lodge is such a beautiful holiday spot, right on the water's edge, with wonderful views. Travelling from Cape Town on the Garden Route, it was the perfect stop off point at the end of the first day's drive, and easy to find as it is so close to the N2.

There is so much to do there. I tried the watersports which were great fun, and it was lovely in the evening, cooking over the Boma fire pit. It's very comfortable in the lodges, you can see that they have been recently upgraded. Everyone was very friendly, and it was a relief to have Wi-Fi on site.

I will certainly be back again - for longer next time!

I had a great holiday at Lakeside and was so glad I found it on the internet when planning my trip from England. The private lakeside facilities at the Lodge are excellent. It is right on the water's edge with shallow launching on site and moorings. You can leave dinghies and kayaks on the water's edge. So it saves a lot of the hassle you otherwise get in having to launch and store boats safely every day.
What's great is the size of the Swartvlei too and that it is surrounded by such lovely countryside, and it's safe. So if you love your watersports then it's the perfect holiday spot. Highly recommended.
