“Beautiful surroundings”
Reviewed November 6, 2011

We stayed in Peppertree Cottage for 3 nights. This cottage is situated at the foot of the surrounding moutains and when you sit on the patio the view is spectacular.

The cottage is not ultra-luxurious, but comfortable with everything provided that is needed for a good stay.

The farm is organic and some of their products are on sale in the cottage - which are very good...!!

The location of the cottage is quite beautiful with wildlife (we saw buck and baboons on the mountainside), birdlife and nature on the doorstep.

If you are looking for time completely away from it all in quiet, peaceful and beautiful surroundings then Tierhoek cottages are ideal.

We travelled about 7km to the Rooiberg Winery where we had a few meals at the Bodega de Vinho restaurant - absolutely superb food with a bakery on site selling delicious breads, pastries and pies - well worth a visit and to stock up on supplies.

A worthwhile stay.

Room Tip: Peppertree cottage is one of the older cottages and more rustic than the newer built ones. But in my...

Stone Cottage: Everything you need in one cute cottage. Secluded cottage overlooks the mountains and a dam filled with bird life. Very private. Lovely indoor fireplace heating both the lounge and bedroom. The Tierhoek hikes are a bit tough if you’re a beginner (and somewhat difficult to follow!) but worth the wonderful views you get when nestled on the ridge. Take your time, and you may meet the wild horse “Pronks”! The ethos of the farm is highly commendable, and although we didn’t meet anyone the whole 2 days we were there, their hard work and dedication to the environment is evident. A fantastic getaway from the rat race! We also recommend their recommendation – go to Saggy Stone! Best beer we’ve had in ages! Robertson PicknPay is also the best for all your additional needs.
Watch out for the outside shower – could burn your rear if not handled delicately!

"Tierhoek" means "tigercorner" in Afrikaans; there are of course no tigers here, but "tier" is the local name for leopard and it is said, that there are still leopards around.
"Stone Cottage" is one of Tierhoeks 4 cottages and it is situated in the Spaarkloof Valley above a large dam, where the baboons and the porcupines come to drink. Access is via a little dusty dirt road a couple of kilometers from the main building, where the owner Bruce and his family run an ecological fruit farm.
Stone cottage is solar powered with gas cookers, there is NO internet (!) and no cell phone coverage (!) so at the beginning we felt very much alone and not quite safe - which turned out to be beyond any reason whatsoever.
You have your own brai and your own private cooling plunge pool on the "stoep" (veranda) overlooking the dam and the mountains and there isn`t a single human dwelling within sight, although you are only 15min.s drive from Robertson with shopping opportunities.
There is a solar powered fridge, a huge fireplace opening towards both sitting room and bedroom, a lovely bathroom with a victorian tub with lionfeet and the nicest outdoor bush shower.
We enjoyed our solitude so much that we are going back to Stone cottage again this year - and we are really looking forward.
Don`t forget to bring some books, some nice boerwurst to brai and some lovely Southafrican Shiraz!
