“A wonderful Guest house in the centre of a beautiful little Karoo town”
Reviewed December 22, 2009

The Saxe-Coburg Lodge has everything for the visitor!! Great hosts, hearty breakfasts, lovely clean, comfy rooms, all set in beautiful gardens, right in the centre of Prince Allbert.
Do yourselves a favour take the ghost walk, Ailsa will bring to life the local friendly ghosts and tell you about this historic town. Treat yourself to homemade lemonade at the Lazy Lizard Cafe with a slice of cake. Dinner at The Gallery Cafe with Brent is not to be missed. All in all a wonderful place to visit and just 'chill'!!!!!

This was a hidden gem - the breakfast was great and the people were charming and very helpful with suggesting places to go and restaurants to visit.
Could have stayed longer if possible

We've stayed at Saxe-Coburg Lodge many times over the past 10 years and have enjoyed it so much that we would never stay anywhere else. The rooms are beautifully furnished with antiques, fine linen and have access to a lush green oasis of manicured lawns and views of the distant mountains. Dick & Regina are wonderful hosts with a wealth of knowledge about the whole area and the early morning walks set you up for a delicious breakfast. A perfect stopover in the heart of the Little Karoo!!

We arrived late in Price Albert after our trip over the Swartberg Pass - we were keen to get to the other side before it got dark and stopped only briefly to appreciate the breath taking views.

We hadn't booked anywhere for that evening, though had taken the names of the accommodation reviewed on Trip Advisor and planned to use them as our starting point. We called first into Onse Rus, but the rooms were cold and uninviting, as they weren't expecting anyone and it was Winter.

We went on down the road to Saxe-Coburg and had a look at their rooms. We were shown one of the rooms in the garden with a large four poster bed and a good sized bathroom. Regina showed us how everything worked and gave us a good description of local eateries. The rooms have an air conditioning/heater, a mini bar, tv with a good range of channels and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was grand, with a selection of cold and hot foods and good strong coffee. We only stayed the one night and didn't really spend much time in Prince Albert itself. Probably the thing we most enjoyed was a visit to the Bergwater winery out the road, which we called at on our way to the next destination having sampleda lovely 2004 reserve with our meal. It did mean sampling some wine at 9.30 in the morning, but sure we were on our holidays..

  • Liked — big comfortable bed
  • Disliked — nothing in particular

Sadly we spent only one night at the very pretty Saxe-Coburg Lodge. We arrived late afternoon and were given the option of the honeymoon suite in the main house or a rather nice garden room which is what we settled for. The gardens were very pretty and the plunge pool was exactly what we needed after an almost 6 hour drive from Franschoek that day. Regina and her husband Dick were very welcoming and delightful people to chat to. We were sorry we were not spending a a few more nights there as we really felt at home.
Breakfast was first class, beautifully laid out in a really lovely dining room but eaten on the terrace of their lovely garden and one could partake of a cooked breakfast which on this occasion was cookied by Dick.
There were also self-catering facilities in some of these garden rooms which would be a good idea as there aren't a huge amount of restaurants to choose from in the town of Prince Albert. We left reluctantly the next morning armed with directions from Dick for a wonderful drive through the Swartberg Pass and Meeringspoort en route to Ooudtshoorn.

  • Liked — The friendliness and garden rooms with terrace.
  • Disliked — Nothing really.

My wife and I stayed at Saxe-Coburg Lodge on a return trip to Prince Albert which is an ideal location for both hiking or just relaxing. We stayed in The Victoria room which is exceedingly well appointed with four poster bed, plenty of room and has a well equipped en-suite bathroom. The room has a verandah facing the large garden where we relaxed or alternatively we lounged under one of the many trees , occasionally dipping in the pool!

Dick and Regina are well seasoned hikers and can advise where to go dependent on weather conditions. it was very hot while we were there and they suggested a walk at the top of the Swartzberg Pass where it was decidedly cooler than in the town. Also each morning we were there they invited us to take a walk with them before breakfast at around 6am when the air is fresh and much cooler. We went on a circuit taking in the ridge of the small hill adjacent to the town which offered fine views of the Prince Albert and the surrounding countryside.

The breakfast served by Dick and Regina on the vine covered terrace adjacent to the main house is wonderful. Plenty of choice hot or cold and more than a feast to set you on the way for the day. This meal made even more enjoyable by the subtle presence of Dick and Regina both of who will help with suggestions for the day or just general conversation. Dick is a bit of a historian and has many interesting tales to tell.

Dick and Regina have managed to create a B & B with ambience and show great, but unobtrusive hospitality. The standard is very high and offers great value for money. We were sad to leave and we have no hesitation in recommending Saxe-Coburg Lodge.

  • Liked — Great accommodation, plenty of room, great and hospitable owners

Spent three nights here in March and thoroughly enjoyed the place. It has a lovely large garden with a small pool and the rooms are in two separate annexes in the garden - 1 with 2 rooms , 1 with 3. Rooms were done in colonial/victorian style - ours was a large room with a fabulous 3-poster bed and large bathroom with cast-iron bath. Large verandah to sit and enjoy the views/wine/beer!

If you come here be prepared to stop - there is nothing to do but enjoy a rest and some great walking in the Swartzberg mountains nearby or an easy sunset walk above the village. Everything shuts down at about 9.30 - the last time to book at most restaurants is 7.30

The B&B is run by Dick and Regina who were excellent in booking restaurants, providing walking maps, etc. - they basically take control of where you should eat (not that there's a massive choice!) but the choices they made were spot on.

A real change after a few days in Cape town and just what we needed - a lovely safe, peaceful place and the night skies are incredible. From what we saw of the alternative places to stay this looks as good as any
