We did not actually travel the 2 hours to Die Hel, but did the Swartberg Pass between Prince Albert and Beaufort Wes.. It's incredibly beautiful and a must see for anyone in that area!

“A VERY LONG PATH”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 1, 2013

If you wish to get away from it all then take the high road before descending into "De Hel". Allow plaenty of time to drive down and stay overnight even if you are on a tight schedaule. Before you go read the story about the location and if you have a hankering for history read the book "Commando". The accomodation is basic but clean and tidy, quite to within an inch of silence. Staff are on hand to share your experiance and you could see a Leopard.

“Bliss”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 11, 2013

Absolute nature- focused experience - no TV, electricity or even cell phone reception on any network. Do not be over-squeamish about the geckos in the rooms - they keep all the other insects away! The warnings about the raiding baboons were absolutely spot-on - they will take any chance you offer them, so close up the cottage if you go for a walk. The hike to Koningsgat is not difficult (1.4km) but you definitely need sturdy shoes or hiking sandals. Swimming in the river here is absolutely to be recommended! Consider renting mountain bikes from Cape Nature - they are not expensive and a great activity for young and old with plenty of flat or hilly gravel roads to ride while admiring the scenery.

Great walks, cool waters. Oom Hanes house was right next to the farm dam and had easy access to the walks. The braai area was under some pepper trees so between the shade and the dam it was the perfect place for summer in hell.

“Best kept secret!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 23, 2012

Against all the advice, we took an ordinary car down to Die Hel, which was exciting to say the least. It was worth every bump in the road. It took us 3 hours to get to the Jouberts and then abother half an hour to reach our cottage "Jan Eentand". The cottage consists of two buildings, one housing the living room and kitchen, the other housing the bedrooms. It was very clean considering all the dust. We had a braai on the night and sat watching the stars for ages. With no electricty you do need to make sure you take a torch or gas lamp. Donald who lives in the next cottage (10 minute walk away) was very helpful and his dog Maggie kept up company all night! We stayed for one night but wished it could have been longer. Go prepared and you will love it - a proper place away from everything!
