“Immediately at home.”
Reviewed April 16, 2012

If Prince Albert is off-the-beaten-track is, then Brakdakkie is a back alley of that track. You won't find a listing of this tastefully and uniquely decorated guesthouse in any guide book. Brakdakkie is situated on the border of the settlement (about 4 blocks away from the center), In a lovely surrounding of farmland and the wilderness of the karoo. You have a splendid view of the mountains from the cottage.

Normally since we are traveling with a 1 year old we usually look for something with restaurants within the range of our babyphone. The cottages are fully selfcatering, unfortunately we arrived on a sunday late in the afternoon. The owner Lance showed us the rooms and we felt at home immediately and didn't want to look any further.
The interior is functional-creative where very old items have found a new life; the chamberpot held the toiletroll, an old cast-iron stove doubled as a barbeque, weathered windowframes served as headposts of the bed and so on.
Our little one especially fancied hammering on the Underwood-black typewriter, an item she would never see in our household for sure. The bed slept lovely and we woke up with the sound of the roosters greeting another sunny day in the karoo.
The little private garden has a lovely grape-vine shaded spot to have an easy breakfast outside; a real treat. Highly recommended!

We loved this little spot in Prince Albert...just out of town, so it is quiet and peaceful. Walking distance into town (5 minutes) where you can enjoy the view from the Gallery Cafe, or sit under strees at a variety of coffee shops and eateries, or go shopping for goodies at little shops.

Brakdakkie is completely unusual, with lampstands made from old piping, to the rusted metal kiddies bike on the wall, old shutters with garment hooks, and the old pull-chain toilet. The quaint little kitchen has all you need to make a light meal if you are not going to enjoy something in town. There were homemade preserves, and homemade rusks to munch on with coffee and a good book. The linen is beautiful with embroidered butterflies, all in white percale - loved the touch of luxury. We also had a tiny plunge pool outside to cool off in the summer heat. The room does have a fan, anti-mozzie spray (and plug-in's). The cottage has complete privacy, there is secure parking, and the cottage is serviced.

Our hosts were very welcoming, and Kerri gave us all sorts of ideas on where to eat and what was good to explore. This was our favourite spot for our whole week of travel in and and around the area.

Notes & Suggestions: drive the Swartberg pass from here, or visit the local wine farms, and olive farms. Great gallery to visit and buy art from SA artists. Area is safe, and wonderful to take long walks around here.

Room Tip: One room has a bath and the other a shower. Keep your shutters closed in summer, and you will have...
