Description: The restaurant is a local institution, renowned worldwide for the best Calamari in Cape Town, with a popular sun-drenched terrace overlooking the bay and mountains. Calamari at the Chapmans Peak was voted as "one of top 20 things to do in Cape Town".It’s the ideal location for those lingering sunsets and balmy evenings. A sun-drenched verandah boasting spectacular views of the bay offers an alternative eating venue for those wishing to dine Al fresco. And in those winter months, it’s one of few places in the Cape with fireplaces (dating back 100yrs)

A visit to this restaurant for the seafood and view is a must - but arrive early since it is very popular. A warm welcome, quick seating and drinks arriving very quickly was great. Calamari is legendary and didn't disappoint, although it is quite pricey. Wait staff could make more of an effort but it didn't detract from a lovely dinner.

We arrived early to enjoy the closing of a beautiful autumn day, and after an initial drink we arranged that our booking for the restaurant (then empty) be transferred to the outside seating. As our visit was occasioned by a celebration we ordered the seafood platter for two.

We had just finished our glass of sparkling wine when the platter arrived in a huge frying pan. Night had fallen by then, and the verandah was softly lit, so, sadly, we could not see much of what was in the frying pan. We battled our way through the first few items. piling our side plates with shells, and getting extremely greasy hands. No sign of our waitress, so I sought out the duty manager for additional serviettes (to augment the single one supplied), finger bowls, and dishes for the shells - and he subsequently brought candles as well.

Regarding the food itself, the prawns were excellent, but the much vaunted calamari had stuck to the pan, where half the batter remained. The chips were just acceptable - they were not hot and it is doubtful if they were freshly prepared for this signature dish. The line fish (Cape Salmon) was tasty without being spectacular. The meal ended with cappuccino and Irish coffee, both also just acceptable, both having poor toppings.

I was in South Africa for 2 weeks and ate at many different restaurants throughout the entire country, and hands down, this restaurant had the best food. I tried several different dishes from seafood to peri peri chicken, and it all came out tasting perfect. However, everyone needs to get the calamari at this restaurant. Seriously, if you like calamari at all, you need to make a trip just to have the calamari here, simply put, the best tasting calamari ive ever had. I came back a 2nd time just for the calamari, and it didnt disappoint!

Spoil yourself and who ever is with you with a choice of the best 3 course meals you would ever eat.

The beer is not bad either :)
