“Delightful - Ashbourne House”
Reviewed December 2, 2012

Ashbourne House is such a delightful place to stay. Sadly we only had two nights there but would hapily stay for longer next time.

John and Russell are welcoming and so knowledgeable about the area enabling you to make the most of your time in the pretty little town of Franschoek. The room was decorated to a very high standard with lovely bedlinen and great bathroom- they would not be out of place in a five star hotel.
Breakfats was cooked to order and lots of things home made - delicious.

It really is a misnomer that it is a B&B - very convenient for a liesurly stroll to the restaurants and shops in but in a quiet spot.

We would have no hesitation to recommend Ashbourne House.

I freely admit to being a returnee to this delightful guest house which combines high quality accommodation with a warm welcome from John, Russell and their friendly staff. A combination of tasteful furnishing and decoration and tasty breakfasts ensure that we shall make further return trips to this lovely spot which oiffers seclusion and convenience to the lovely town.

Room Tip: The rooms in the house are more private and therefore preferable to those around the pool.

Many small inns have their quirks but you stay in them because you don't want the austerity of a big hotel chain. Ashbourne, however, has managed to get the best of both worlds: the intimacy of a small inn with the consistency you would expect at a large hotel. The rooms are perfect. Our bathroom, in particular, was beautiful. The breakfast options are all delicious. The omelets, home-made seed bread, and home-made muesli had me wanting more! Finally, the most importing thing... listen to Russell. Every morning he came over to our table and asked what was on our agenda for the day. He made superb suggestions. He brought out a map, highlighted where to go, how to get there, and then called and made arrangements. There were some places we had heard about that we wanted to go to. He then worked his recommendations around those. (It is worth noting that when we veered from his suggestions we were invariable disappointed.) His enthusiasm for the beauty of the region is infectious. This alone makes Ashbourne worthwhile. Add to that professionalism, courtesy, and a superior staff and I can't imagine a better experience. Go, eat, drink, and listen to Russell!

My husband and I stayed at Ashbourne for a couple of nights this week. The guest house is perfectly positioned within walking distance of the village. The rooms are spacious and spotless. Our room had a beautiful bathroom and had it's own entrance. The entire house has clearly been decorated with much care and attention. It has the feel of a boutique hotel, rather than a guest house. The weather was beautiful so having a pool to relax by at the end of the day for an hour or so was perfect. The breakfasts are wonderful. Bread and muffins are baked in the kitchen daily and the homemade toasted muesli is a delight. In addition orders are taken for a freshly cooked hot breakfast. John and Russell are perfect hosts, so keen to ensure you have a wonderful trip. Their local knowledge is outstanding and really makes a difference. I would not stay anywhere else in Franschhoek.

Our room was great - spacious, clean, and a very nice bathroom. And it looks like they have a lovely pool outside for warm days.

Our breakfast each morning was tremendous, plenty of delicious cold and hot options as well as fresh squeezed orange juice and great French pressed coffee.

After breakfast Russell (one of the owners) talked with us and gave us recommendations for the entire day. Every recommendation was fantastic. If great food and wine is important to you, (and I imagine it is if you are traveling to Franschhoek), Russell will know exactly where you should go. We might have stumbled onto one or two great restaurants on our own, but with Russell's direction the entire stay was an incredible experience.

Although we had less contact with the other owner, John, he is also a foodie and booked us a table at a great restaurant in Stellenbosch on the day of our departure.

I recently stayed at Ashbourne Guest House with my boyfriend for one night. It is a little off the main road but a wonderful guest house. It is really quite upmarket and they do great breakfasts. The rooms weren't as great as other places we stayed but the fact they were self contained and the main house was beautiful made up for it.

We were the only guests pre season but felt totally safe and at home
John & Russel were fantastic hosts and very helpfull
Only negative, they missed the trick with leaving out underfloor heating in the bathroom. (Maybe not needed in the summer)
Keep up the good work and I am sure we will revisit
