Our stay in South Africa's wine country could not have been better. The room we stayed in at Ashbourne House was upscale, georgeous, comfortable, and even had a heated bathroom floor. The cost by U.S. standards was a pleasant surprise. Russell the owner is a fabulous host whose recommendations on restaurants and activities were spot on. Franschhoek is becoming known as the gourmet restaurant capitol of South Africa. Between the vinyards and wine, great restaurants, and accomodations at Russell's B & B, it would be hard to say which we enjoyed the most.

We had a really enjoyable stay at Ashbourne House. Its a beautiful guesthouse that has been very thoughtfully designed so that each room feels like a little private suite and has a lovely combination of modern design and traditional comforts. Russell could not have been more helpful in suggesting lovely places to visit and to eat at in the surrounding Franschhoek area - most of them were as good as the delicious breakfasts at Ashbourne!

Ashbourne has it all. Great central location with a safe and easy walk to the centre of Franschoek. Stunning interiors that look straight off the pages of a design guide. Small and intimate with fantastic garden and pool. Our bedroom was large, spacious and well equipped. The largeg walk-in shower was a real delight as was the very large and comfortable bed. The breakfasts are incredible - yes with the seed bread as good as other reviewers have complimented.

It is within easy walking distance of many top vineyards and Sonia and I had a lovely walk in the sunny valley enjoying a few of them.

We arrived on a wet Easter Sunday when the town was very quiet. One thing you have to understand is that the lounge and dining area are locked up very early in the evening - not like hotels. John and Russell organised what I would say is one of the best meals I have enjoyed anywhere on the planet - in Le Bon Vivant. We feasted on tasing menus and supped on fantastic local wine - all for a very reasonable price. I have eaten in Michelin Star restaurants in Europe that were not as good as this!

Our room was clean, bright and comfortable. John and Russell were the ultimate hosts, organising, recommending and booking restaurants, nothing was too much trouble ..... exactly what you need as a weary traveller. The pool was very inviting and welcome, as was the Magnum ice cream dispensed in the late afternoon !!!
Breakfast was superb ..... you must try the home made seed bread..... and served without any fuss or trouble.
Ashbourne House is definitely a place to stay when in Franschhoek. I can thoroughly recommend, and will be back.

I was staying in Franschhoek for a wedding and Ashbourne House was suggested by the couple. I couldn't have been happier with the choice. A friendly, intimate guest house with pool. The location was great, central enough to walk into the village for dinner every evening but set back from the main road ensuring peace and quiet.

The rooms are lovely, nice view, balcony area and large bathroom. Free to come and go as you please with no curfew. Incredible cooked breakfasts with home made muesli and muffins started every day off perfectly.

The true highlight though was our hosts. John, Russell and Joan could not have done more to make the stay any better. Recommendations for dinner and things to do every day helped to make the most of the village. I have never stayed somewhere where people have gone out of the way to such a degree to ensure you are comfortable and having a good time and they were even endlessly patient when I lost my key.

Comfortable, friendly and great value for money. I would definitely recommend.

This guest house is situated off the main road through the village of Franschhoek in a quiet
side street. It's about a 10 minute walk from the busy bits of the main street, but longer if
you want to eat at the Quartier Francaise, Reuben's or Rick's kitchen which are at the other end of the main street.

I believe there are about 8 bedrooms, two of them by the side of the small swimming pool.
I stayed in room 5 which is at the top of a small wooden staircase adjacent to the main
guest house. I am not clear why the owner decided on this room as I was the only guest staying on my first night and would have preferred any of the other rooms at ground level. Although I did not specifically request a ground floor room.

I am not sure if it because the room was on the first floor that the water pressure was
abysmal. The water struggled out of the shower and the tap over the sink. It was also very
difficult to regulate the temperature in both. In order to get cold water into the sink you had
to run the tap for ages as it came out very hot initially whichever way the mixer tap was
turned. However that is my only complaint about this guest house which in most other
respects was great.

The room was clean and well furnished, there was a small seating area with a TV, kettle,
fridge and tray with wine, biscuits and nuts. If you used these you had to make a note and
pay for them when you checked out. There was no TV in the bedroom, which I would have
preferred, but that isn't a complaint. The TV had the four local terrestrial channels, plus
BBC news and BBC entertainment channels.

The garden area at the back of the guest house was paved over with flower beds and pots
dotted around. It was beautifully maintained and felt very peaceful and relaxing. There
were plenty of sun loungers out by the pool which was clean and well maintained. While I
was sitting there in the afternoon the owner appeared and offered me a choc ice which I
thought was a nice touch! After spending the mornings touring vineyards in the heat, the pool was very refreshing.

Breakfast was a wide choice of juices, cereals, fruit, eggs, bacon, omelettes, crossaints,
toast and seed bread. The scrambled eggs were delicious.

I did say I only have one complaint however I have another two niggles. The car parking
for guests is outside the gates / wall on a parking area adjacent to the street, which felt less
safe. And I'm not sure whether the owners live on site which for me as a single woman travelling alone, knowing that I was the only guest in the hotel that night, meant I did not feel
particularly safe arriving back late after dinner. Other than that I can recommend this hotel
to anyone looking for a base in Franschhoek.

The owners were very welcoming and informative about the area. They recommended good restaurants and also a trip up the hill to watch the sun go down which was wonderful and to be recommended to anyone spending time in Franschhoek.

Room Tip: The poolside rooms looked lovely from the outside, I didn't see inside them.

Immaculate rooms, friendly ambiance and perfect facilities (private pool, computer etc) made for a very relaxing holiday.
Russell was an unbelievable host who would do anything to help you and we really appreciate his assistance in everything.
The breakfasts are outstanding - make sure you try the most delicious muesli!

Room Tip: every room is different, so whether you like a balcony, poolside or easy access you cannot go wrong!
