“Great breakfasts”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 16, 2011

Really great rooms and a lovely area to sit around the swimming pool. Location was excellent, walking distance into the centre of town. Breakfasts were really good.

We spent two days at the end of September at Ashbourne House in Franschhoek. We were late arriving, but John still took his time in showing us around the property and checking us in without making us feel rushed. Our room was extremely large, and well appointed, on the ground floor. The bathroom was so very nice with a heated towel rack and heated floor.

John and Russell had prearranged a full day wine tour for us the following day. We were pleasantly surprised to find out that we would have the tour all to our selves! The guide was affable and very knowledgeable about the wineries and region's history, as well as the wines of course!

Breakfast was held in charming dinning area with both buffet servings of fruit, yogurt, cheeses and the like, as well as hot breakfast to order. Russell took our order personally and made us feel at home at Ashbourne House.

I would recommend Ashbourne House, without hesitation, to anyone looking to have a romantic or relaxing stay in the Winelands. The atmosphere and service that John and Russell have provided at their guesthouse is truly a gem.

Lots of travellers to Franschhoek, do it as a daytrip. While alone in this region, there are over 300 wine estates to visit, excellent restaurants to try out, go for shopping, hiking, etc etc. You can't possibly do that in one day ! So, that's why we have been to Ashbourne House at least 6 times already. It's a great place, always a warm welcome and the hospitality is great. It feels like home away from home.

Room Tip: All rooms are lovely. We always stay in the top floor but the rooms nearer to the pool area are also...

We stayed for two nights in September, Ashbourne House as recommended by the team at Blackheath Lodge in Cape Town and we were not disappointed. We arrived slightly early and met John & Russell on their way out for the day but they could have been more welcoming, making sure we were settled in and they gave us tips for where to have lunch. The property is immaculate, beautifully restored with a great attention to detail. We were in room 6 at the top of the house with a great view of the mountains. The room was spacious and very comfortable with a great big power shower. It's a 5 minute stroll into town (perfectly safe to walk at night) and we tried many of John's recommended restaurants - the French Connection is great but the food at Le Bon Vivant is even better, though to be honest you really are spoilt for choice in Franschhoek. There were also recommended vineyard walks in the information guide in the room which we tried, it was lovely to find a guest house in town so that we could walk everywhere and not worry about drinking (so we could try more wine!). The breakfasts were delicious, again a real attention to detail with little homemade muffins to finish. We were very sorry to leave and hope to go back again soon.

This is a great guest house in the centre of Franschhoek. It is in a residential area but is a short 5 minute walk to the main street which has small boutique shops and great restaurants. Russell and John are great hosts. A lovely breakfast is provided and the rooms are in brilliant condition. Russell and John were on hand to offer advice for what to do in the area and they arranged a private wine tour for us with Cheryl which was extremely enjoyable- highly recommended. I have nothing negative to say about Ashbourne House. It has a lovely pool area and is perfect for a stay in Franschhoek.

We would highly recommend Ashbourne House. The rooms were large, comfortable and finished to a high standard. We had a very pleasant stay in Franschhoek, sampling its many fine restaurants, and Russell and John were incredibly friendly and helpful.
